Key takeaways

  • You need 4 things settled before you open a gold IRA: the source of the money, the amount, the tax type and a balance that can carry flat fees.
  • Clause 3: unpaid fees and delivery risk.
  • Opening a $50,000 gold IRA costs about $2,835 in the first year, as of September 2026, and $2,500 of it is a 5% dealer markup.
  • No law sets how long opening a gold IRA takes; the law fixes only a few dates, such as the 7-day right to revoke and tax deadlines.
  • You can buy gold with IRA money in 3 ways: a self-directed gold IRA, bullion inside a Fidelity IRA, or a gold ETF in any IRA.

You open a gold IRA in 5 steps: choose a custodian that holds metals, open the account, fund it, buy IRA-eligible gold, and confirm it reached the vault. On a $50,000 account, those steps cost about $2,835 in the first year, as of September 2026. Most of that is the dealer's markup, the amount you pay above the metal's market value. So which step decides what you pay, and which papers can you still undo?

A gold IRA is an ordinary IRA whose custodian, the bank or trust company that holds the account, lets it own physical metal. This page covers opening one: steps, costs, timing, routes and mistakes.

Every fee comes from a dated, published schedule, and every rule names its source.

What Do You Need Before You Open a Gold IRA?#

You need 4 things settled before you open a gold IRA: the source of the money, the amount, the tax type and a balance that can carry flat fees. A gold IRA is not a separate tax category; it is a traditional or Roth IRA at a custodian that allows metal (IRS Publication 590-A).

The 4 decisions are listed below.

  • Source: another IRA, a former employer's plan or new savings.
  • Amount: the IRS sets no minimum; custodians and dealers do.
  • Tax type: traditional or Roth, matching the money you move.
  • Balance: flat yearly fees weigh heavily below about $25,000.

Which money can you use to open a gold IRA?#

You can open a gold IRA with money moved from another IRA, money rolled from a former employer's plan such as a 401(k), or a new cash contribution. For IRA money, the simplest route is an IRA to gold IRA transfer. The table compares the 3 methods under IRS Publication 590-A.

Method Where the money comes from Tax or withholding Dollar limit The one rule that matters
Trustee-to-trustee transfer (one custodian sends the money to the other) An existing IRA None; not reported as a distribution None, and no once-a-year limit It is not a rollover, so there is no 60-day clock
Direct rollover (the plan pays the new custodian) A 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457(b) or TSP, after you leave the job or reach the plan's in-service age 0% withheld when paid to the new custodian (26 U.S.C. 401(a)(31), 3405(c)) None The check must be payable to the custodian, not to you
New contribution Your bank account May be deductible in a traditional IRA $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older, for 2026 (Notice 2025-67) Cash only, and you need earned income (26 U.S.C. 408(a)(1), 219)

Earned income means pay from work, such as wages; Social Security, pensions and dividends do not count, so a couple living only on those can contribute $0. If one spouse works, a spousal IRA lets that pay cover both (26 U.S.C. 219(c)): a $14,000 W-2 caps the couple at $14,000, and two accounts mean two sets of flat fees ($430 a year at GoldStar, as of September 2026).

An IRA to gold IRA transfer has no 60-day clock and no dollar cap.

How much money do you need to open a gold IRA?#

The IRS sets no minimum to open a gold IRA, but how much money you need to start a gold IRA depends on 3 other limits, listed below.

  • Contribution cap: new money is limited to $7,500 for 2026, or $8,600 at 50 or older; the extra $1,100 is a catch-up contribution (IRS Notice 2025-67). The deadline is April 15, 2027, with no extension (26 U.S.C. 219(f)(3)). Transfers and rollovers have no cap.
  • Custodian cash minimum: idle cash kept in the IRA to pay fees: $500 at Madison, Forge, Provident, IRA Financial, uDirect and Preferred, and $750 at American IRA. Schedules were read in September 2026 (American IRA's dates from November 2024). Directed asks for $500 only when fees come out of the account.
  • Dealer minimum order: from $1,000 for a Fidelity IRA metals purchase and $2,000 at APMEX to $25,000 at Goldco, as of September 2026.

A $50,000 company minimum equals 5.8 years of maximum contributions at $8,600, so it is reachable only by moving savings you already have.

Company-by-company minimums are listed in how much money you need to start a gold IRA.

Traditional or Roth: which type of gold IRA should you open?#

Open the same tax type as the money you are moving: a traditional gold IRA for pre-tax IRA or 401(k) money, and a Roth gold IRA for Roth money. Roth 401(k) money can go only to a Roth IRA (IRS rollover chart).

Type Money it takes Tax on growth and withdrawals Required minimum distributions (RMDs)
Traditional Pre-tax IRA and plan money; deductible or nondeductible contributions Tax-deferred; withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income, never at the 28% collectibles rate (26 U.S.C. 1(h)(4)-(5)) From 73 (born 1951-1958) or 75 (born 1960 or later)
Roth Roth IRA and Roth 401(k) money; Roth contributions Qualified withdrawals are tax-free after 5 years and age 59 1/2 (26 U.S.C. 408A) None during your life

Tax-deferred means no tax until you take money out, and ordinary income is taxed like wages. An RMD is the yearly withdrawal the law requires from a set age. A qualified withdrawal is a Roth payout that passes the age and 5-year tests.

The other types of gold IRAs, including SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, follow the same custodian rules.

When is a gold IRA too expensive for your balance?#

Below about $25,000, a gold IRA's flat fees take more than 1% of your balance a year, so a gold fund in your current IRA usually costs less. A flat fee is a fixed dollar charge; fee drag is that fee as a share of your balance. The table uses one $285 yearly fee (Equity Trust metals-only, segregated storage, FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726).

Balance Yearly fee Share of the balance each year
$5,000 $285 5.70%
$10,000 $285 2.85%
$25,000 $285 1.14%
$50,000 $285 0.57%

Over 10 years, a $10,000 bullion IRA costs about $3,720 in markup and fees, or 37.2% (SafeOunce computation, fees as of September 2026). The same $10,000 in the GLDM gold ETF costs about $100. An ETF is a fund that trades like a stock, and GLDM's expense ratio, its yearly fund fee, is 0.10%.

Companies with the lowest minimums, and when a gold IRA is too expensive even with them, are compared separately.

How to Open a Gold IRA in 5 Steps#

The gold IRA setup process has 5 steps, and you control the order: custodian first, funding second, and metal only after the cash arrives. The 5 steps are listed below in order.

  1. Choose a custodian that holds precious metals.
  2. Open the self-directed IRA.
  3. Fund it.
  4. Pick a dealer and IRA-eligible gold.
  5. Direct the purchase and confirm delivery.

Step 1: Choose a custodian that holds precious metals#

Choose the custodian first: it is the bank or trust company that holds your gold IRA, pays the dealer and reports to the IRS. This page quotes gold IRA custodians such as Equity Trust, GoldStar Trust and STRATA Trust.

The custodian must be a bank or an IRS-approved nonbank trustee, a non-bank firm the IRS lets hold IRAs (Treas. Reg. 1.408-2(e)); the list had 73 names as of April 1, 2026. Large metals custodians qualify instead as bank divisions or state-chartered trust companies, firms a state licenses to hold others' assets (26 U.S.C. 408(n)). Charters, fees and storage options of the gold IRA custodians are compared in one table.

The 4 checks before you pick a custodian are listed below.

  • Check the charter with the state banking regulator or on the IRS nonbank trustee list.
  • Download the fee schedule, the custodian's price list, and note its revision date.
  • Read the depository list: Equity Trust names 5 vaults, including Brink's and Delaware Depository (September 2026).
  • Ask in writing which fee schedule applies to you.

Cost of this step: $0.

Step 2: Open the self-directed IRA and read 3 clauses before you sign#

Open the account by signing the custodian's IRA application, custodial agreement (your contract with the custodian) and disclosure statement (its rules and fees). Then name a beneficiary, the person who inherits the account. Rules and costs of a self-directed IRA for gold are on the account-type page. Three clauses matter most.

Clause 1: the right to revoke. You have at least 7 days to revoke, or undo, a new IRA for a full refund (Treas. Reg. 1.408-6(d)(4)(ii)).

Who bears the dealer's markup after a revocation is not established, so ask the custodian in writing to hold your money until the 7 days pass. How to cancel a gold IRA, and what the dealer's contract adds, is explained separately.

Clause 2: the arbitration opt-out. Arbitration is a private hearing that replaces a court case. Equity Trust's account application, quoted in Clark v. Equity Trust Co., No. 1:24-cv-00845 (D.N.M. Oct. 29, 2024), reads: "unless I opt out of the arbitration agreement within 65 days of opening my Account, I agree that I will be bound by that Arbitration Agreement." The customer "did not opt out," so her claim over a $200,000 order that was never filled went to arbitration.

Clause 3: unpaid fees and delivery risk. Equity Trust's precious metals risk and fee disclosure (CA_F-0003-05 Rev. 121625) says it is not responsible for a dealer's failure to deliver or for the metal's authenticity. It may also sell your metal and pay it out to you if fees go unpaid. New Direction closes the account and reports it on Form 1099, Provident sells enough for the fees plus one year, and Advanta acts after a 30-day notice.

Cost of this step: $0 to $50 in setup fees, as of September 2026: STRATA waives its $50 online, and Equity Trust and GoldStar charge $50. Equity Trust also bills its $125 yearly fee "at establishment".

Step 3: Fund the gold IRA by transfer, rollover or contribution#

Fund the new gold IRA by having the new custodian pull money from your old IRA, or your old 401(k) pay it directly. That way a gold IRA rollover never passes through your hands. Every source a gold IRA rollover can start from, with its own trap, is on the rollover hub.

The 3 funding instructions are listed below.

  • Request a trustee-to-trustee transfer for IRA money, on the new custodian's transfer form.
  • Request a direct rollover for plan money, payable to "[Custodian] FBO [your name] IRA". FBO means "for the benefit of", and 0% is withheld.
  • Send a contribution by check or bank transfer, and name the tax year.

The account you leave may charge an exit fee for closing or moving it; a partial transfer moves only part of the account.

Account you leave Exit fee Schedule date
Vanguard $100 per account (a couple moving 4 accounts pays $400) Effective July 10, 2026
Schwab $50 full transfer; $0 partial April 2026
Merrill $49.95 November 2025
E*TRADE $75 full transfer Pricing page, September 2026
Robinhood $100, plus repayment of any IRA match within 5 years: $250,000 moved in with a 2% match and out in March 2027 costs $5,100 Fee schedule, September 2026
Morgan Stanley $125 transfer ($95 self-directed) plus the annual fee due on exit: up to $250 March 2026
Empower-run 401(k) plans $0 to $75 per payout Plan notices 2023-2025; check your plan's notice

A job plan also has the age-55 rule: penalty-free withdrawals when you leave the job in or after the year you turn 55 (26 U.S.C. 72(t)(2)(A)(v)). IRAs lack it, so a rollover gives it up; the 401(k) to gold IRA rollover guide prices that trade-off.

Once your RMDs have started, the year's RMD can never be rolled over (26 U.S.C. 408(d)(3)(E)); rolled, it is an excess contribution taxed 6% a year. On a plan payout it comes out first: ask for $100,000 with a $10,000 RMD due, and only $90,000 can be rolled.

Cost of this step: $0 at the new custodian; $0 to $250 per account at the old one, as of September 2026, plus any clawed-back match.

Step 4: Pick a dealer and IRA-eligible gold, with 5 numbers in writing#

Pick the dealer and the exact coins or bars yourself, because the dealer, not the custodian or the IRS, sets the price. A dealer that sells metal for IRAs is often called a "gold IRA company". The 12 questions to ask when you choose a gold IRA company apply to any dealer.

The same coin cost 5.8% more at one dealer than another on September 29, 2026. The table prices a 1 oz American Gold Eagle at 5 dealers against the Kitco bid, $4,148.10 at about 10:20 UTC. The bid is the price the market pays when you sell; spot is the market price for large trades.

Dealer Price for 1 coin, paid by wire or cash Over the Kitco bid
Blanchard $4,259.61 +2.69%
Pacific Precious Metals $4,278.56 +3.15%
Summit Metals $4,351.02 +4.89%
Fisher about $4,352.10 +4.92%
Texas Precious Metals $4,508.06 +8.68%

Dealers named only as the source of a dated public price, not ranked or recommended. Single-coin prices; larger orders may be priced differently.

Eleven coins cost $46,855.71 at the lowest price and $49,588.66 at the highest: $2,732.95 more for identical gold (SafeOunce computation).

A spread is the gap between a dealer's selling and buying prices. The CFTC puts bullion (coins and bars valued for their metal) at 5% to 10% over spot. Numismatic (collector) coins run 40% to 200% (CFTC release 8215-20, August 4, 2020).

Get these 5 numbers in writing before any money moves.

  1. Price per coin, and its percent over spot.
  2. The dealer's buy-back price for the same coin today.
  3. All yearly custodian and storage fees.
  4. All exit fees.
  5. The cancellation window, and what starts it.

The IRS publishes "no list of approved investments" (IRS Retirement Plan Investments FAQs), so the test is which precious metals the tax code allows. Gold qualifies as a named US coin, or as custodian-held bullion at least .995 fine (pure) (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)). The Gold Eagle is only .9167 fine, but 408(m)(3)(A) names it. Each coin's route is on the list of precious metals the tax code allows.

The custodian's own list is the final gate. As of September 2026, Equity Trust and GoldStar refuse graded coins (sealed in a plastic slab with a grade) and proof Gold Buffalos. STRATA and GoldStar take proof American Eagles only ungraded, in original mint packaging with a certificate of authenticity. No IRS ruling covers proof coins, so get the custodian's written yes before the dealer invoices.

Cost of this step: the dealer's markup, for example 5% = $2,500 on $50,000. Custodian trade fees run from $0 (GoldStar, Entrust) to $130 (New Direction) per purchase, as of September 2026; STRATA charges $75 ($40 plus $35 depository handling).

Step 5: Direct the purchase and confirm delivery to the depository#

Sign the custodian's purchase direction only after your cash shows in the gold IRA, then confirm the metal reached the depository (vault). The purchase direction tells the custodian what to buy, from whom, at what price and for which vault. Directed IRA's metals Direction of Investment form (08/2025) warns: "Directed Trust Company may send funds to the dealer ... before metals physically arrive at the depository."

The metal should appear in your depository account within about 28 days of payment. That is the CFTC's delivery deadline for financed metal sales (Commodity Exchange Act 2(c)(2)(D)), a benchmark here, not an IRA rule. How to check delivery of IRA gold, and what to do if it never arrived, is covered step by step.

The 4 delivery checks are listed below.

  • Match the coins and quantities on the statement to your invoice.
  • Expect a lower first gold IRA statement. Custodians value metal without the dealer's premium. At unchanged prices, $50,000 spent at a 5% markup shows about $47,500 (95%); at a 20% spread, about $40,000 (80%).
  • Keep the invoice, direction and receipt together.
  • Write to the custodian if nothing posts within 4 weeks.

Segregated storage keeps your coins apart; commingled storage pools them and returns the same type and weight. Both are allocated (assigned to you), and segregation costs $50 to $100 a year more, as of September 2026.

Why a first gold IRA statement shows less than you paid is a valuation rule, not a loss.

Cost of this step: storage of $110 to $175 a year at Equity Trust and STRATA, or $125 commingled at GoldStar, as of September 2026, plus the custodian fee.

The same 5 steps open a silver (.999 fine), platinum or palladium (.9995) IRA; only the fineness rule changes.

What Does Each Step Cost? A $50,000 Gold IRA in Year One#

Opening a $50,000 gold IRA costs about $2,835 in the first year, as of September 2026, and $2,500 of it is a 5% dealer markup. The table prices each step on Equity Trust's metals-only schedule (FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726).

Step Who charges Example amount Published range (as of September 2026)
1. Choose a custodian Nobody $0 $0
2. Open the account Custodian $50 setup $0 (STRATA online) to $50 (Equity Trust, GoldStar)
3. Fund it The account you leave $0 $0 to $250 per account, plus any match clawback (cost to leave your brokerage or 401(k))
4. Buy gold Dealer $2,500 (5% markup) About 2.7% to 8.7% over the bid for one coin on September 29, 2026; CFTC bullion benchmark 5% to 10%
5. Hold and store Custodian and depository $285 ($125 fee + $160 segregated storage) $215 (GoldStar commingled) to $656 (Madison) a year at $50,000 (gold IRA storage fees)
Total, year 1 $2,835 (5.7%)

Custodian named only as the source of a published schedule. Fees paid from outside the IRA; gold price unchanged; SafeOunce computation.

IRS guidance covers paying only the trustee's own fees from outside, so ask in writing whether storage can be; fees paid from inside are why custodians keep a cash minimum.

From year 2, the account costs $285 a year (0.57%); closing later adds $280 ($30 to sell, $250 to close). Because the markup is the largest cost, how dealers set gold IRA markups matters more than which custodian you pick.

The same $50,000 can cost $1,679 to $10,705 in year one, as the 3 paths below show; a spread cap is the most a dealer's contract allows.

Path Metal price Account fees, year 1 Total, year 1 Share of $50,000
Low-cost bullion: a 1 oz coin 2.91% over spot (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026); GoldStar commingled ($50 + $215) $1,414 $265 $1,679 3.4%
Example on this page: 5% markup; Equity Trust metals-only, segregated $2,500 $335 $2,835 5.7%
High-markup coin: a 19.99% spread, the top of American Hartford Gold's "up to" bullion cap (contract dated September 2026); Equity Trust Universal IRA ($50 + $500 + $160) $9,995 $710 $10,705 21.4%

Composite illustrations built from published documents, not a quote from any one company. "Up to" caps are maximums, not prices charged.

Over 10 years, a $50,000 bullion IRA with about a 5.4% round trip costs about $5,880 with fees and closing (11.8%, SafeOunce computation). A round trip is what you lose if you buy and sell straight back. To price your own quote, the gold IRA fee calculator compares 10-year totals.

Why Equity Trust can charge $285 or $660 a year for the same gold IRA#

Equity Trust publishes at least 4 fee schedules, and the one your account lands on can change the yearly cost at $50,000 from $285 to $660, as of September 2026. A schedule's revision is its version label, such as "Rev. 081726"; a value tier is a fee band set by account value.

Schedule Yearly fee at $50,000 (segregated storage) How the fee is set
Precious Metals-only, FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726 $285 ($125 + $160) Flat at any balance
Universal IRA, FS-0001-01 Rev. 110625 $660 ($500 + $160) By account value: $350 below $50,000, $500 from $50,000
Legacy retail, FS-0001-03 Rev. 081726 $425 plus storage By account value ($425 at $50,000 to $99,999)

The gap between the first two is $375 a year, or $3,750 over 10 years. The Universal tiers also create a cliff: $49,999 pays $350 a year, $50,000 pays $500. The full Equity Trust review lists every schedule and its revision.

The published schedules do not say which customers get which one, so ask in writing which schedule and revision apply to you.

Gold IRA custodian fees differ across firms too: at $50,000, from GoldStar's $90 a year to Madison's $556 before storage, as of September 2026. Other custodians' setup, yearly and trade charges are compared in gold IRA custodian fees.

Why opening in December can double your first fee bill#

Opening a gold IRA in December can mean paying the yearly fee twice within weeks, because some custodians bill at opening and again every January. Equity Trust's metals-only schedule bills its annual fee "(Charged at establishment and each January thereafter)". Storage is billed "at the time the metals are received at the elected depository and each January thereafter". "Account maintenance fees are not prorated," meaning they are not cut for unused months.

GoldStar and STRATA bill on the anniversary of opening instead, so the month you open does not matter there.

How much gold must rise to cover the opening costs#

After a 5% markup, gold must rise about 10.4% before you could sell back without a loss; after a 20% spread, about 31%. Break-even is the rise that closes 2 gaps: the markup you pay and the buy-back gap, how far below its own cost a dealer pays you when you sell.

Markup or spread Rise needed, including the buy-back gap
2% 7.1%
5% 10.4%
10% 16.6%
19.99% 31.1%

Assumes the dealer buys back about 4.7% below its own cost; account fees excluded. SafeOunce computation.

The table measures a hurdle, not a forecast. To test a real quote, work out how much metal must rise to cover the markup, fees and buy-back.

How Long Does It Take to Open a Gold IRA?#

No law sets how long opening a gold IRA takes; the law fixes only a few dates, such as the 7-day right to revoke and tax deadlines. A business day is a weekday that is not a federal holiday.

Stage Fixed rule Source
New IRA opened Right to revoke for at least 7 days Treas. Reg. 1.408-6(d)(4)(ii)
Arbitration opt-out, where offered 65 days after opening in the Equity Trust application quoted in Clark (2024); check your own agreement Account application quoted in Clark v. Equity Trust (D.N.M. 2024)
Transfer or direct rollover No 60-day clock IRS Publication 590-A
Check paid to you 60 days from the day after you receive it 26 U.S.C. 402(c)(3), 408(d)(3)
2026 contribution By April 15, 2027, with no extension 26 U.S.C. 219(f)(3)
Gold bought Should post to the depository within about 28 days (a benchmark) Commodity Exchange Act 2(c)(2)(D)
Form 5498 from the custodian Reports 2026 contributions, rollovers and the year-end value; filed by May 31, 2027 IRS Instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498

Form 5498 is the yearly form your custodian files with the IRS.

Moves between brokers are faster because they use ACATS, an automated system. Under FINRA Rule 11870, a transfer is validated within 1 business day and completed within 3 business days after that. ACATS runs only between broker-dealers, so a metals custodian generally receives your cash by check or wire.

Sellers publish their own times. APMEX says an account can be ready "in just 30 minutes", with transfers in "5-7 business days" and rollovers in "10-15 business days" (IRA page dated September 23, 2026). SD Bullion says it opens and funds accounts "in as few as six business days", with rollovers in 7 to 10 business days (IRA page, September 2026). These are company statements, not promises.

The account you leave sets its own pace: E*TRADE lists about 10 business days for an electronic full transfer and 3 to 6 weeks on paper, as of September 2026. So how long a gold IRA rollover takes depends on the companies, not a legal deadline. Provider data on how long a gold IRA rollover takes is collected as it is published.

How Can You Buy Gold With IRA Money? 3 Routes Compared#

You can buy gold with IRA money in 3 ways: a self-directed gold IRA, bullion inside a Fidelity IRA, or a gold ETF in any IRA. Only the first two put physical metal in a vault in your IRA's name. An ETF gives you shares of a trust that holds gold.

Route What you own Yearly cost at $50,000 Buying cost Minimum Who holds it
Self-directed gold IRA Coins or bars in your IRA's name at a depository $215 to $325 flat (GoldStar commingled to STRATA segregated) Dealer markup, for example 5% Set by custodian and dealer; $0 by IRS rule Custodian and depository
Fidelity IRA bullion Gold Eagles (1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 oz), 1 oz Gold Buffalo, bullion bars 0.50% storage = $250 ($15 yearly floor) Published rate 2.50% on $10,000-$49,999, 1.98% on $50,000-$99,999; $44 minimum per trade $1,000 per IRA purchase FideliTrade, Delaware
Gold ETF in any IRA Shares of a trust that holds gold GLDM 0.10% = $50; IAU 0.25%; GLD 0.40% Brokerage commission, often $0 online 1 share The fund's custodian

All as of September 2026. Sources: custodian fee schedules; Fidelity fee schedule FA-FEES-0926; the funds' annual reports (Form 10-K).

A Fidelity gold IRA is a regular Fidelity IRA that buys bullion; its fees, eligible coins and limits are on the Fidelity gold IRA page. Fidelity does not publish its dealer spread or whether its tier rate covers a whole order, so no Fidelity round-trip total is shown.

The next table compares a flat $285 fee with the percentage routes (SafeOunce computation, fees as of September 2026).

If you want Route that costs less or fits Why
Physical metal on a balance under $57,000 Fidelity IRA bullion 0.50% storage costs less than a flat $285 below $57,000; but the $44 minimum makes a $1,000 buy cost 4.40%, and the $15 floor is 1.50% of $1,000
The lowest yearly cost at any balance under $285,000 Gold ETF (GLDM) 0.10% costs less than a flat $285 below $285,000
Coins or bars you pick, at a custodian and depository you pick Self-directed gold IRA The only route with your own coin and vault choice; flat fees favor larger balances

Gold ETFs are allowed inside any IRA (the principle of IRS private letter ruling 200732026). There, the 28% collectibles rate, the top tax on long-term metal gains outside a retirement account, never applies (26 U.S.C. 1(h)(4)-(5)). So the gold IRA vs gold ETF choice turns on cost and ownership, not tax. The yearly cost of each route at every balance is in gold IRA vs gold ETF.

6 Mistakes That Cost Money When You Open a Gold IRA#

Six mistakes cost the most money when you open a gold IRA, and the costliest is buying a coin the tax code does not allow. The other 5 are keeping the gold at home, taking the money out yourself, letting the dealer pick the custodian, switching to premium coins and over-contributing.

1. Buying coins the tax code does not allow#

The IRS taxes a coin the law does not allow as a withdrawal of its price, which can cost a couple aged 58 about $11,720 on a $40,000 purchase.

Instead, buy only coins that pass a Step 4 route and the custodian's list; the Krugerrand and the British Sovereign fail at .9167. The IRS collectibles rule is why a wrong coin is taxed as a withdrawal.

2. Keeping the gold at home#

Keeping IRA gold at home, or in a safe you control, makes its cost a taxable distribution, as the Tax Court ruled in McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (November 18, 2021).

The law requires bullion to be in the physical possession of the IRA's trustee, meaning the trustee, not you, holds it (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B)). Metal at home fails this test, which is why a home storage gold IRA was taxed in McNulty.

Instead, keep the metal at a depository (Step 5).

3. Taking the money out yourself to move it#

Taking a check in your own name to move money into a gold IRA starts a 60-day clock and triggers withholding. Miss the deadline and the whole amount can become taxable. Withholding is tax the payer holds back for the IRS: 20% on plan money paid to you, which you cannot waive (26 U.S.C. 3405(c)), and 10% by default on an IRA payout, which you can decline on Form W-4R.

On a $100,000 plan payout, the check is $80,000; to roll over everything, you add the $20,000 withheld from other savings (26 U.S.C. 402(c)(3)). A check payable to the new custodian FBO you is still a transfer, even if it is handed to you (IRS Publication 590-A).

The 60-day rollover rule also has a same-property trap: you cannot withdraw cash, buy coins and deposit the coins (Lemishow, 110 T.C. 110 (1998); Estate of Caan, 161 T.C. No. 6 (2023)). Only one 60-day IRA-to-IRA rollover is allowed per 12 months; transfers are not limited (IRS Announcements 2014-15 and 2014-32).

Instead, use a transfer or a direct rollover. How to count the days under the 60-day rollover rule is explained with calendar examples.

4. Letting the dealer pick your custodian#

Letting the dealer choose your custodian means you never compare custodian fees or read the agreement yourself.

In Clark v. Equity Trust (D.N.M. 2024), the dealer, Oxford Gold Group, "directed her to open an individual retirement account" with Equity Trust, one of its "preferred partners". The account funded a $200,000 order, but "Oxford never fulfilled the trade." Oxford has since failed: an involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy case was filed against it on August 28, 2024 (Bankr. C.D. Cal. No. 2:24-bk-16947-NB).

Instead, pick the custodian yourself in Step 1, then find a dealer it accepts. "Dealer chose the custodian" is one of the warning signs behind the real cases in gold IRA scams.

5. Switching to "premium" coins or bonus offers#

Switching from plain bullion to "premium" or proof coins at opening, often with a bonus attached, can cut the gold you own by a fifth or more on day one. A proof coin is a specially struck collector version with a mirror finish. The CFTC puts numismatic coins at 40% to 200% over spot (release 8215-20) and calls "semi-numismatic" "a made-up industry term that really has no special meaning."

A 10% bonus on $100,000 of coins sold at a 30% spread leaves about $78,613 of metal. Plain bullion at a 5% spread leaves $95,000 (SafeOunce computation).

Instead, get the bullion price per coin in writing and decline any swap. How numismatic coin upsells work, and what they cost, is shown with case files.

6. Putting in more than the contribution limit#

A new contribution above $7,500 for 2026, or $8,600 at 50 or older, is an excess contribution, taxed 6% a year until you take it out (26 U.S.C. 4973); a $2,000 excess costs $120 a year.

You need earned income at least equal to the contribution, but there is no maximum age since tax year 2020 (SECURE Act sec. 107).

Instead, move large sums by transfer or rollover, which have no limit. The limit covers all your traditional and Roth IRAs together; all gold IRA contribution limits for 2026, including SEP and SIMPLE, are in one table.

What Happens After You Open a Gold IRA?#

After you open a gold IRA, 4 things follow: a yearly statement and tax form, required withdrawals, and one day a sale or a move. The 4 events are listed below.

  • Statement and Form 5498: the custodian reports the year-end value in box 5 each year.
  • Required minimum distributions (RMDs): a traditional gold IRA pays out yearly from 73 (born 1951-1958) or 75 (born 1960 or later). The RMD rules let you take coins or cash.
  • Selling inside the IRA: the sale is not taxed; Equity Trust's metals-only schedule charges $30 per sale (September 2026). How to sell gold in your IRA covers the buy-back cost.
  • Switching custodians: moving the coins unsold is a transfer in kind, not a rollover ($125 at Equity Trust). See switching gold IRA custodians.

Questions readers ask before opening a gold IRA#

Six common questions are answered below.

Are gold IRAs a good idea?#

A gold IRA is a reasonable choice only for money you can leave in metal for years, after counting the markup, the flat fees and gold's lack of interest. The LBMA PM price, the London benchmark set each afternoon, fell 26.1% from its record $5,405.00 on January 29, 2026 to $3,993.55 on July 16, 2026. Whether a gold IRA is a good investment is weighed with 55 years of data.

Do you need a gold IRA company or a free kit to open one?#

No: you can open a gold IRA directly with a custodian and buy from any dealer it accepts. Free gold IRA kits are dealer marketing, not a required step. APMEX, for example, names 3 custodians on its IRA page dated September 23, 2026. What is inside free gold IRA kits, and who calls you next, is documented separately.

Does the IRS know if you buy gold in an IRA?#

Yes: your custodian reports your gold IRA to the IRS every year on Form 5498, including contributions, rollovers and the year-end value of the metal. Box 5 shows the fair market value, the value the custodian assigns at year-end. Form 1099-R reports any money or coins you take out. Every form in Does the IRS know about your gold is decoded box by box.

What if you invested $1,000 in gold 10 years ago?#

Gold worth $1,000 at the LBMA PM price of $1,322.50 on September 28, 2016 was worth about $3,134 on September 28, 2026: 12.1% a year before any markup or fees. A flat $285 gold IRA fee would take more than a quarter of a $1,000 balance each year. Gold fell in 19 of the 55 years from 1971 to 2025, and year-by-year gold IRA returns since 1971 show the good and the bad decades.

How much would $5,000 in an IRA be worth in 20 years?#

In gold, $5,000 invested 20 years ago was worth about $34,366 on September 28, 2026, before any markup or fees, using the LBMA PM price of $603.00 on September 28, 2006. Over those 20 years, $10,000 became $68,732 at spot. In a gold IRA with a 5% premium and $250 a year in fees, it became about $49,929 (SafeOunce computation). Past results are not a forecast. The gold IRA calculator projects any amount after markup and fees using real historical returns.

Is it better to have physical gold or a gold IRA?#

A gold IRA gives you tax deferral, while coins you own outside an IRA give you control. The IRA adds custodian fees and bars you from keeping the metal at home (McNulty, 2021). Long-term gains on coins held outside an IRA are taxed at up to 28% when sold (26 U.S.C. 1(h)(4)-(5)). Costs, taxes and control are compared in gold IRA vs physical gold.
