SafeOunce ranks silver IRA companies on the ounces your money buys, what their contracts let them charge and their legal record, and no company can pay for its place. A silver IRA company sells you the silver and helps set up the account, but a custodian, a trust company, legally holds your IRA. The premium over spot is the part of your price above the silver's market value.
On the morning of September 29, 2026, $50,000 bought between 633.8 and 760.5 ounces of the same 1 oz Silver Eagle at six dealers. That gap is 126.7 ounces, about $7,769 of silver at $61.34 an ounce. So why does no other list show you that number?
We checked 26 sellers: 15 gold IRA companies that also sell silver and 11 bullion dealers with an IRA path. This page asks whether you need a seller at all, ranks 25 of them and prices the markup in ounces. It then covers our 7 criteria, the contracts, the enforcement cases, segregated storage, 6 rankings by situation, a 60-second test for any list and 6 numbers to get in writing.
The same method ranks the best gold IRA companies; this page applies it to silver.
The table below sums up what we checked, as of September 29, 2026.

Should You Buy Silver Through a Silver IRA Company at All? 5 Checks First#
You need a silver IRA company only if you want physical silver in your IRA, have about $25,000 or more and can leave it for five years. Otherwise, a silver fund or a brokerage IRA usually costs less.
The 5 checks below run in order, and you should stop at the first one that fits you.
- Under about $25,000. Flat custodian and storage fees of $235 to $285 a year (Equity Trust metals-only schedule, Rev. 081726) take 0.94% to 1.14% of $25,000 and 2.35% to 2.85% of $10,000. A silver ETF, a fund that owns silver and trades like a stock, costs 0.30% to 0.50% a year: SLV charges 0.50%, and SIVR 0.45%, cut to 0.30% by a waiver to February 28, 2027 (10-K filings).
- Money needed within about 5 years. A round trip means buying and then selling back the same day. At Monex's posted prices on August 12, 2026, a Silver Eagle lost 5.84% on a round trip before commission, against 3.92% for a Gold Eagle (see Buyback below). Silver also fell 48.2% from its January 29, 2026, LBMA record by September 28, 2026.
- Wanting the coins delivered later. An in-kind withdrawal means taking the coins out of the IRA instead of cash. $100,000 of silver weighs about 111.8 pounds (50.71 kg). Custodians charge for each in-kind withdrawal: $125 at Equity Trust, and $75 plus $10 and shipping at GoldStar (2026 schedules).
- Moving a 401(k) or IRA. Use a direct transfer, where money moves from custodian to custodian and never passes through your hands. A plan check made out to you loses 20% to withholding under IRC 3405(c).
- Otherwise. Shortlist 3 sellers from the table below, ask each for a written quote in ounces on the same day and compare them.
If you are still deciding whether a silver IRA fits you at all, start with its costs and rules. If you pass these checks, which seller should you call?
The SafeOunce Silver Ranking: 25 Silver IRA Companies and Dealers Checked#
As of September 29, 2026, no silver IRA company has a SafeOunce Score, so the 25 sellers in our table are ordered by silver ounces per $50,000, not by quality. The ounces come from each seller's own published price for a 1 oz Silver Eagle that morning. Lear Capital, the 26th seller we checked, is not ranked and appears under Legal Record.
Group 1 holds the 6 bullion dealers whose Silver Eagle price we captured that morning. Group 2 holds 7 sellers whose silver price we saw at another time or could not capture. Group 3 holds 12 gold IRA companies that publish no silver price. Every seller is "Rating pending": we do not yet hold the quote and agreement a score needs.
Interim order: by the silver ounces $50,000 bought at each seller's published Silver Eagle price on the morning of September 29, 2026. This is a price snapshot, not a quality score.
The first table lists group 1. Premiums are over the Kitco silver bid, a widely used market price, of $60.72 at about 6:15 a.m. ET on September 29, 2026.

A low price on one morning is a good sign, not a promise. "None found" means our research of September 29, 2026, found no regulator action or customer-fraud case; it never means a clean record.
Which sellers met each test in writing? The list below names them from the tables on this page, as of September 29, 2026. It is not a list of picks.
- Silver price and buyback bids posted online: Pacific Precious Metals, SD Bullion and Monex.
- Lowest same-morning Silver Eagle price: Blanchard, Pacific Precious Metals and Summit Metals (one morning only).
- Spread cap in the contract: American Hartford Gold and Preserve Gold; American Bullion publishes a typical range. Lear Capital is not ranked.
- Cancellation window for every transaction: Augusta, up to 7 calendar days (its FAQ).
- Lowest published entry point: JM Bullion's $100 order minimum, APMEX's $2,000 and Birch's $5,000.
- Segregated storage by default: Noble, at IDS. Segregated silver still depends on the custodian (see Storage).
BBB and Trustpilot figures are shown as seen that day and are not scored. Fortune ranks Monetary Gold #5 and National Gold Group #10 for silver. Both are left out here because we could not verify a silver price, minimum or legal entity for them.
Every one of the gold IRA companies and dealers we track, including those that failed, is listed with its status.
Why no silver IRA company has a SafeOunce Score yet#
No silver IRA company has a SafeOunce Score yet, because 3 of our 7 criteria (price paid, contract fairness and product mix) need a written silver quote, the customer agreement or a mystery shop. We score only what a seller puts in writing, and unknown data scores 0 points.
The 3 items a silver score still needs from each seller are listed below.
- A written silver quote for a $50,000 IRA order of 1 oz Silver Eagles and 100 oz bars, logged against spot on the same day. It feeds the measured premium, worth 15 points.
- The customer agreement you would sign. It feeds contract fairness (15 points) and buyback terms (5 points).
- A mystery shop, where we ask for a quote like any customer and record the answer. It feeds product mix and sales pressure (10 points).
Sellers that send nothing within 10 business days are listed as "Not rated: would not disclose."
SafeOunce ratings are re-checked every quarter, and rank changes are logged. Each score, when published, and every later change is dated in the SafeOunce ratings changelog.
Which silver IRA companies show a silver price before you call?#
As of September 29, 2026, only 10 of the 26 sellers we checked showed a silver coin price you could read before calling. Thirteen of the 15 gold IRA companies showed none.
The 10 are 9 bullion dealers (Blanchard, Pacific Precious Metals, Summit Metals, SD Bullion, Fisher, Texas Precious Metals, APMEX, JM Bullion and Monex) plus Allegiance Gold. Orion Metal Exchange priced one silver item, a 5 oz America the Beautiful coin at $356.46.
We divided each Allegiance price by the ounces in the product and compared it with Allegiance's own 1,000 oz bar, so the time of day does not matter. The bar is a yardstick, not a buy for most savers. By this measure, a Silver Eagle cost 19.5% more per ounce than the bar and a proof Eagle 85.5% more.
The table below turns one seller's own silver price list into a cost per ounce.
| Product | Listed price | Price per ounce | More per ounce than its 1,000 oz bar | Ounces for $50,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 oz bar | $64,211.07 | $64.21 | Base | 778.7 |
| 10 oz "Silver Eagle" bar | $694.44 | $69.44 | +8.1% | 720.0 |
| Austrian Philharmonic 1 oz | $71.12 | $71.12 | +10.8% | 703.0 |
| Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz | $71.74 | $71.74 | +11.7% | 697.0 |
| America the Beautiful 5 oz | $357.90 | $71.58 | +11.5% | 698.5 |
| British Britannia 1 oz | $74.18 | $74.18 | +15.5% | 674.0 |
| American Silver Eagle 1 oz | $76.72 | $76.72 | +19.5% | 651.7 |
| Australian Osprey 1.5 oz | $123.52 | $82.35 | +28.2% | 607.2 |
| Gyrfalcon 1.5 oz | $126.50 | $84.33 | +31.3% | 592.9 |
| Australian Falcon 1.5 oz | $128.09 | $85.39 | +33.0% | 585.5 |
| American Silver Eagle proof 1 oz | $119.13 | $119.13 | +85.5% | 419.7 |
When a seller shows prices, compare them per ounce: the same silver can cost a third more just because of the coin's design. Put the written silver quotes you receive side by side in the gold IRA company comparison tool.
Ounces per Dollar: What the Markup on Silver Costs You at Each Company#
The markup decides how much silver you own: on September 29, 2026, $50,000 bought 633.8 to 760.5 ounces of the same Silver Eagle at six dealers. At one dealer, different eligible silver bought 342.2 to 790.9 ounces the same morning.
The spot price is the market price of one ounce of pure silver. The premium is what you pay above spot. The spread is the share of your price that is not metal, and the markup is the same gap measured over the seller's cost. The two measures differ: a 100% markup equals a 50% spread.
What is a normal premium? The CFTC puts bullion at 5% to 10% over spot and numismatic, or collector, coins at 40% to 200% over spot (CFTC advisory 8215-20, August 4, 2020).
Which matters more, the seller or the coin? Both move the result by over 100 ounces on $50,000, as the next two sections show. How dealers set the spread on gold and silver is explained in gold IRA markups and spreads.
Same coin, different seller: the 1 oz American Silver Eagle on one morning#
On the morning of September 29, 2026, the same 1 oz Silver Eagle cost $65.75 to $78.89 at six dealers. So $50,000 bought 126.7 more ounces, about $7,769 of silver, at the lowest price than at the highest.
The table below shows each dealer's price and the silver $50,000 bought.
| Seller | Coin year | Price per coin | Over the Kitco bid | Ounces for $50,000 | Silver value of those ounces at $61.34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blanchard | Dates vary | $65.75 | 8.28% | 760.5 | $46,646 |
| Pacific Precious Metals | Any year | $66.45 | 9.44% | 752.4 | $46,155 |
| Summit Metals | Random year | $66.94 | 10.24% | 746.9 | $45,817 |
| SD Bullion | Random year | $68.22 | 12.35% | 732.9 | $44,957 |
| Fisher | Backdated | About $70.67 | 16.39% | 707.5 | $43,399 |
| SD Bullion | 2026 | $71.22 | 17.29% | 702.0 | $43,064 |
| Fisher | 2026 | About $72.67 | 19.68% | 688.0 | $42,204 |
| Texas Precious Metals | 2026 | $78.89 | 29.92% | 633.8 | $38,877 |
Asking for this year's date costs you silver. A random-year or backdated coin is an Eagle from an earlier year that the dealer picks. At SD Bullion, a 2026 Silver Eagle cost $71.22 against $68.22 for a random-year Eagle, 4.4% more for the same silver. Fisher's sheet adds $11.95 over spot for a 2026 coin and $9.95 for a backdated one, a $2.00 gap per coin.
The 1 oz American Silver Eagle is also the only silver coin the tax code names. 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(A)(ii) allows "a silver coin described in section 5112(e) of title 31." In plain English: the Eagle qualifies by name, and no fractional Silver Eagles exist. Equity Trust's FAQ still lists fractional Silver Eagles, an error in that FAQ.
Why the 1 oz Eagle qualifies by name, and the custodian rules for proofs, are in American Silver Eagle in an IRA.
Same seller, different coin: which IRA-approved silver coins and bars buy the most ounces?#
At one dealer on September 29, 2026, $50,000 bought 790.9 ounces of 2026 Britannias but only 702.0 ounces of 2026 Silver Eagles, and both are IRA-eligible. That is 88.8 ounces, about $5,450 of silver, for choosing the coin.
Sellers often call these products "IRA-approved silver," but the IRS keeps no list of approved investments. Bars, rounds and foreign coins qualify as silver bullion at least .999 fine, held by the IRA trustee (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B)).
The COMEX rule reads: "Silver delivered under this contract shall assay to a minimum of 999 fineness" (Rule 112101). In plain English: 99.9% pure silver qualifies if your custodian accepts and holds it. Every eligible coin, bar and round is listed in IRA-approved silver.
The table below shows what $50,000 bought of 12 silver products at SD Bullion, against its own spot of $61.34.
| Product | Price | Premium over spot | Ounces for $50,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 British Britannia 1 oz | $63.22 | 3.1% | 790.9 |
| Generic 1 oz round | $64.22 | 4.7% | 778.6 |
| 100 oz generic bar | $6,521.95 ($65.22/oz) | 6.3% | 766.6 |
| Kilo generic bar | $2,096.87 ($65.22/oz) | 6.3% | 766.6 |
| 10 oz generic bar | $657.20 | 7.1% | 760.8 |
| Austrian Philharmonic, random year | $66.21 | 7.9% | 755.2 |
| Canadian Maple Leaf, random year | $66.22 | 8.0% | 755.1 |
| American Silver Eagle, random year | $68.22 | 11.2% | 732.9 |
| American Silver Eagle, 2026 | $71.22 | 16.1% | 702.0 |
| American Silver Eagle proof | $81.22 | 32.4% | 615.6 |
| American Silver Eagle MS-70 (graded, custodians refuse) | $97.22 | 58.5% | 514.3 |
| 1/10 oz 2026 Britannia | $14.61 ($146.10/oz) | 138.2% | 342.2 |
Custodians add their own rules. Only Britannias from 2013 on qualify, because older ones are .958 fine. GoldStar requires silver of at least .9990, and custodians refuse graded coins sealed in plastic slabs. Proof coins go in only under custodian conditions.
The brand on a bar can cost more than the silver in it. The same dealer priced 10 oz bars at 7.1% over spot (generic), 16.1% (Royal Canadian Mint) and 25.9% (Engelhard). Which refiners' bars custodians accept is in IRA-eligible silver bars.
Fractional silver costs the most per ounce: the 1/10 oz Britannia cost $146.10 an ounce. Why is covered under Contract Terms below.
Why the buyback price and break-even matter more for silver than for gold#
Silver's buyback gap is usually wider than gold's. At Monex's posted prices on August 12, 2026, a Silver Eagle sold back the same day lost 5.84%, against 3.92% for a Gold Eagle, before a commission Monex does not publish.
The bid is what a dealer pays you for your coins. Break-even is how much silver must rise before a sale covers your costs. The gap also varies by product: at the same dealer, a Silver Britannia lost 11.32%.
The table below compares same-day round trips on silver and gold at one dealer on one date.
| Product | Dealer and date | Lost if sold back the same day | Rise needed to break even |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz Silver Eagle | Monex, Aug 12, 2026 (before commission) | 5.84% | 6.20% |
| 100 oz silver bar | Monex, Aug 12, 2026 (before commission) | 3.16% | 3.26% |
| 1 oz Silver Britannia | Monex, Aug 12, 2026 (before commission) | 11.32% | 12.77% |
| 1 oz Gold Eagle | Monex, Aug 12, 2026 (before commission) | 3.92% | 4.08% |
Your first custodian statement shows the same gap. Custodians value metal at a spot or bid-based price without the dealer's premium; Equity Trust uses "the previous day's metal type value." $50,000 of 2026 Eagles at $71.22 is 702.0 ounces, which shows at about $43,064 at $61.34 spot, 13.9% below cost.
If the gap is bigger than your quoted premium explains, ask why at once. Test any silver quote and bid in the gold IRA break-even calculator.
How SafeOunce Rates Silver IRA Companies: 7 Criteria Plus a Silver Price Test#
SafeOunce scores silver IRA companies on 7 criteria worth 100 points, and the largest, price paid, rests on a same-day written silver quote. That quote covers 1 oz Silver Eagles and 100 oz bars, logged against spot the same day.
The 7 criteria are price paid (30 points), account costs (10), contract fairness (15), legal record (20), complaints (10), product mix (10) and custody (5). Numismatic coins are collector coins priced above their metal. Pushing them, or fractional or "exclusive" silver, lowers product mix, and custody checks whether silver can be stored segregated. Bands are word labels for a score range: Excellent (85-100), Good (70-84), Fair (55-69) and Poor (under 55).
Every rule, weight and data source, the same for silver as for gold, is published in how SafeOunce rates gold IRA companies.
Gates are pass-or-fail rules applied before scoring. A seller that closed or went bankrupt (G1), or was sanctioned for fraud or non-delivery (G2, permanent), is not ranked. A settled pricing or disclosure case keeps a seller out for 5 years (G3), which is why Lear Capital is not in the table. Three more gates cover watch cases, sellers that would not disclose and firms outside our scope.
The table below compares our weights with the two published weightings we found on major lists.

Wrong rule statements on a seller's own pages also lower product mix. On September 29, 2026, Silver Gold Bull's FAQ said "Any bullion produced by an LBMA or COMEX-approved mint is eligible." The real test is fineness, trustee possession and custodian acceptance. Gainesville Coins' IRA page lists the British Britannia as unacceptable, yet 2013 and later Britannias qualify.
JM Bullion's IRA FAQ still calls First State Depository safe. Augusta's silver page calls its products "IRS-approved." Noble's rare-coin page pitches Morgan and Peace dollars for a silver IRA, but classic dollars are .900 silver and fail both routes.
Contract Terms: Spread Caps, Cancellation and Buyback in Silver IRA Company Agreements#
Only 4 of the 15 gold IRA companies we checked publish a spread range or cap, and at the highest cap $50,000 holds at most 326 ounces of silver. Plain 2026 Britannias bought 790.9 ounces at 3.1% over spot at one dealer on September 29, 2026.
A spread cap is the most of your price the seller may keep as its margin. A spread range is what a seller says it typically keeps, so it is not a limit. The table below turns each published figure into the silver $50,000 can hold.
| Contract term (seller, document date) | Share of your price that is not metal | Silver $50,000 holds | vs 2026 Britannias at 3.1% over spot (790.9 oz) |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Bullion "typically 7%-23%" (October 2024) | 7%-23% (typical range, not a maximum) | 758.1 to 627.6 oz | 32.8 to 163.3 oz less |
| American Hartford Gold bullion "1.00%-19.99%" (September 2026) | Up to 19.99% | At most 652.2 oz | 138.7 oz less |
| Preserve Gold bullion "up to 20%" (June 2025) | Up to 20% | At most 652.1 oz | 138.8 oz less |
| Preserve Gold IRA "generally up to 34.99%" (June 2025) | Up to 34.99% | At most 529.9 oz | 261.0 oz less |
| American Hartford Gold "exclusive" or semi-numismatic (September 2026) | Up to 39.99% | At most 489.2 oz | 301.7 oz less |
| American Hartford Gold limited numismatic (September 2026) | Up to 59.99% | At most 326.1 oz | 464.8 oz less |
Lear Capital, the fourth company, states a 2% to 35% range (terms dated December 2025). At a 19.99% spread, silver must rise 25.0% before the metal is worth what you paid; at 34.99%, it must rise 53.8%. Each clause of the 4 contracts is set side by side in gold IRA company contracts compared.
A cancellation window is the time you have to undo an order. American Hartford Gold gives 7 days for non-bullion only, running "regardless of whether the account is fully funded." Preserve Gold and Lear give 24 hours after the invoice, Augusta's FAQ up to 7 calendar days, and Priority Gold 3 business days to 8 days, by state.
Dealers are stricter. JM Bullion allows no cancellation after confirmation, and Money Metals none at all. Others charge any market loss plus $25 (Summit), $95 (Pacific) or $350 (Texas Precious Metals).
You can also cancel a gold or silver IRA itself. The revocation right is your 7-day right to undo a new IRA with the custodian, separate from the dealer's terms.
No contract we read promises to buy your silver back at a set price. The American Hartford Gold, Lear, Preserve, Goldline and American Bullion contracts say the law prohibits guaranteeing a repurchase, and Augusta "cannot legally guarantee" one. Goldco's "Buy Back program guaranteed at the highest price" and Noble's "Our guaranteed buyback program" come with no published terms.
What "exclusive", proof and numismatic silver coins cost you#
"Exclusive", proof and fractional silver coins cost far more per ounce than plain bullion. On September 29, 2026, a 1/10 oz Britannia sold at 138.2% over spot at one dealer, against 3.1% for the 1 oz coin of the same series.
The CFTC puts numismatic coins at 40% to 200% over spot (advisory 8215-20, 2020) and calls "semi-numismatic" "a made-up industry term." At the same dealer, a proof Silver Eagle cost 32.4% over spot and a graded MS-70 Eagle 58.5%. A switch from plain bullion to these coins is a classic upsell, described in numismatic coin upsells.
The fractional trap shows in two prices for the same 1/10 oz Silver Britannia. The CFTC alleges Metals.com sold at least 93,000 of them for over $611,600, at an alleged 287% markup over the prevailing market price (CFTC complaint). That case is pending, so the markups are allegations.
Two sellers on one popular silver list show a Polar Bear coin among their sample products. A 1/2 oz silver Polar Bear is the coin at the center of the pending Metals.com case.
Steered to a rare-sounding coin? Compare its price per ounce with an Eagle's. Proof coins enter an IRA only under custodian conditions, set out in proof and graded coins in an IRA.
Is "free silver" really free?#
No: free silver is paid for by the coins you must buy to get it, so it helps only if those coins cost no more per ounce than plain bullion. Bonus metal is extra coins added to an order. The effective premium is what you really pay over spot once the bonus is counted.
The table below lists 4 free-silver offers seen on September 29, 2026, and what to ask about each.
| Offer (seller, date) | Condition | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Goldco 5% ($50,000-$99,999) or 10% ($100,000+) bonus silver (homepage, Sept 29, 2026) | Only on "Goldco premium coins"; markups not published | The per-ounce price of the required coins vs plain Eagles |
| American Hartford Gold up to $15,000 free silver (homepage, Sept 29, 2026) | "Qualifying purchases" | Which coins qualify and their spread class under the September 2026 agreement |
| GoldenCrest Metals up to 10%, capped at $25,000 (homepage, Sept 29, 2026) | Conditions not published | The price per ounce with and without the offer |
| Priority Gold up to $15,000 (special offers page, Sept 29, 2026) | Conditions per offer | The price per ounce with and without the offer |
Lear Capital also advertises up to $15,000 in free coins. Money's partner ads of September 25, 2026, read "Receive Up to $25,000 in Free Silver" and "Up to 10% in Bonus Silver."
The FTC's rule on "free" offers says the cost may not be recovered "by marking up the price of the article ... which must be purchased" (16 CFR 251.1). In plain English: a seller may not raise the price of the required coins to pay for the free silver. How each offer is paid for is shown in free silver gold IRA promotions.
Legal Record: Silver Is Where the Largest IRA Enforcement Cases Happened#
Silver is where the largest precious metals IRA markup cases happened: Safeguard Metals sold silver in over 97% of its coin sales. The pending Metals.com case centers on a 1/2 oz silver coin with an alleged 213% average markup over market.
A consent order is a court order the company agreed to without a trial, and a sanctioned seller is one a court or regulator penalized. Receivership means a court-appointed manager runs the failed firm, and restitution is money ordered back to customers. An allegation is a charge not yet proved in court. The table below lists 5 sellers whose records matter to silver buyers.
| Seller | Status | What happened (case, date) | Silver angle | Money involved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metals.com (TMTE) | Failed (receivership since September 22, 2020) | CFTC and 30 states, N.D. Tex. 3:20-cv-02910; civil trial set for March 1, 2027; allegations, not findings | 4.1 million 1/2 oz silver Polar Bears at an alleged 213% average markup over market; 1/10 oz Silver Britannias at an alleged 287% | Over $185 million alleged; $8 million interim distribution |
| Safeguard Metals | Failed | CFTC liability consent order October 25, 2023 (CFTC 8812-23); CFTC final judgment September 30, 2025; SEC final judgment May 2, 2025 | Silver was over 97% of coin sales; average markup 64% on silver coins (SEC) | $66,948,960 from more than 450 customers |
| Red Rock Secured (American Coin Co.) | Renamed, sanctioned | Charged May 15, 2023; CFTC and SEC consent judgments April 23, 2024 (CFTC 8881-24) | 130% markup on silver Red-Tailed Hawk coins (SEC complaint) | At least 950 customers paid over $69 million for coins worth about $30 million; CFTC total $56,334,313.90 |
| Lear Capital | Operating, not ranked | NY Attorney General $6 million and LA City Attorney $2.75 million settlements (December 30, 2021); Chapter 11 filed March 2, 2022, plan confirmed June 12, 2023, with a $5.5 million customer fund; no admission | Ranked #1 silver IRA company by Fortune (October 15, 2025) | $14.25 million paid in public settlements |
| Monetary Gold | Operating | FDIC demanded it "cease false advertising" (FDIC PR-37-2020, March 19, 2020); no fine | Ranked #5 by Fortune; its sample products there include a proof Eagle and a Polar Bear coin | None stated |
The pattern repeats across these precious metals IRA cases. Buyers moved from Eagles and bars into small or "exclusive" silver coins, and the seller kept much of the money as markup. In the Metals.com case this is still an allegation. Every case since 2008 is tracked in precious metals IRA enforcement actions.
The FDIC said Monetary Gold of Woodland Hills, California, was "falsely indicating that consumer insured bank deposits can be legally seized by banks" (FDIC PR-37-2020, March 19, 2020). In plain English: it was a demand to stop the ads, not a fine.
Silver IRA companies that failed or were sanctioned, and what buyers lost#
Buyers in the silver cases lost money mainly to the markup, not to a price crash. At Safeguard's average 64% markup on silver coins, $50,000 bought only about $30,500 of silver.
Vaults can fail too: First State Depository held 2,102 accounts, 90% of them IRAs. CFTC release 8606-22 alleged it took at least $7 million in funds and silver from at least 200 customers. Its owner was sentenced on June 17, 2025, to 65 years. What happens to your account when a seller collapses is on failed gold IRA companies.
Restitution is the amount you paid minus the metal's value at the time of sale, so it does not return what you paid in full.
The 5 delivery checks below help you confirm that your silver really reached your IRA.
- Confirm that the custodian pays the dealer on your signed direction.
- Read your statement from the custodian, not from the dealer.
- Check that the vault account is in your IRA's name.
- Expect the metal to post within about 28 days; the CFTC uses 28 days as its actual-delivery test (advisory 8215-20).
- Match the item list on the statement to your invoice.
Storage: Which Custodians and Vaults Can Keep a Silver IRA Segregated?#
Three big custodians limit segregated silver at the Delaware Depository: STRATA and Entrust segregate only gold, platinum and palladium there, and GoldStar only 1,000 oz silver bars. Segregated storage keeps your exact coins apart from everyone else's. Segregated silver coins are possible elsewhere, such as at the Texas Precious Metals Depository through STRATA.
The table below shows where 5 custodians can keep silver segregated and which sellers default to them, as of September 29, 2026.
| Custodian | Segregated silver at the Delaware Depository | Where segregated silver coins are possible | Sellers in the table that default to it |
|---|---|---|---|
| STRATA Trust | No (gold, platinum, palladium only) | Texas Precious Metals Depository (segregated only) | Allegiance, American Bullion, Advantage |
| GoldStar Trust | Only 1,000 oz bars | IDS, TPMD, AMGL | Blanchard (and Birch, Pacific, Texas Precious Metals among others) |
| The Entrust Group | No (gold, platinum, palladium only) | Not published | GoldenCrest (ask whether its "segregated" storage covers silver) |
| Equity Trust | Not published in our sources | Not published in our sources (its depository list: AMGL, Brink's, Delaware, IDS, Texas Bullion Depository) | Augusta, APMEX, U.S. Money Reserve (and Birch) |
| New Direction Trust Company | Not published in our sources | Not published in our sources (vaults used: Money Metals Depository; AMGL for JM Bullion) | JM Bullion, Money Metals, Fisher |
Commingled storage keeps your silver with identical coins of other customers. It is still allocated to you: you own a set number of coins, not a share of a pool. The segregated storage trade-offs are in segregated vs commingled gold IRA storage.
GoldStar's 1,000 oz bar limit shuts most savers out of segregated silver at that vault. A 1,000 oz bar is about $61,340 of silver at $61.34 spot, and Allegiance priced one at $64,211.07 on September 29, 2026. A $50,000 silver IRA cannot hold even one segregated bar there.
Your seller often picks the custodian, so check the last column before you call. GoldenCrest advertises Delaware Depository storage "segregated in customer name," so ask whether that covers silver. "Not published in our sources" for Equity Trust and New Direction does not mean no.
Vault insurance has limits: the Delaware Depository carries $1 billion of all-risk cover plus $100 million contingent (its FAQ, September 29, 2026), excluding war, terrorism, cyber and confiscation. It pays metal value, not premiums, unless a declared value, a value you file with the vault, is on record. FDIC and SIPC never cover IRA metal. Every custodian's storage options are compared in gold IRA custodians.
How much does silver IRA storage cost at a custodian or dealer-owned vault?#
Flat-fee custodians charge the same $215 to $285 a year for $50,000 of silver as for gold. Percentage-fee vaults charge silver more: 0.80% a year at GBI Direct, a dealer platform, against 0.70% for gold.
The table below shows yearly storage and custody for silver under 7 setups, from 2026 schedules.
| Setup | On $50,000 | On $100,000 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoldStar commingled | $215 | $215 | Flat, no trade fee |
| Equity Trust metals-only commingled | $235 | $235 | Flat |
| STRATA commingled | $265 | $265 | + $75 per purchase or sale |
| GBI Direct (0.80% silver + $125 Equity Trust fee) | $525 | $925 | Grows with the silver price |
| Fidelity IRA (0.50% storage, no custodian fee) | $250 | $500 | Silver Eagles and bars only, plus commissions |
| SD Depository (0.39%) | $195 + custodian | $390 + custodian | IRA use of these rates not stated |
| Gainesville (0.25%, 2022 agreement) | $125 + custodian | $250 + custodian | The agreement gives the dealer a lien on stored metal |
A flat fee stays the same as your silver grows. Each vault's full schedule is in gold IRA storage fees.
A value-based fee is a percent of your metal's value, so it rises with silver. $100,000 of silver growing 5% a year costs $11,815.43 in 10 years at GBI Direct, against $2,410 with exit fees at GoldStar's flat commingled rate. GBI Direct's IRA FAQ quotes a different rate, 0.06% a month, so confirm it in writing.
A dealer-owned vault is one run by the seller. SD Depository charges 0.39% for silver against 0.29% for gold. Gainesville charges 0.25% against 0.20%, and its 2022 agreement gives the dealer a lien, a legal claim, on stored metal. Compare dealer-owned vaults for IRA metal before you use one.
$100,000 of silver is about 1,630 ounces; the same money in gold is about 24 ounces. Flat vault fees ignore that bulk, but shipping coins home does not.
Storage is only one cost of a silver IRA. Every silver IRA fee, from setup to exit, is compared in gold IRA fees.
Best Silver IRA Company for Your Situation: 6 Specialist Rankings#
The best silver IRA company depends on your situation: a $10,000 saver, a $100,000 rollover and a buyer who wants segregated storage need different things from the same seller. You should check the specialist ranking that fits you before you call anyone.
The table below matches 6 situations to a specialist ranking and one number to know now.
| Your situation | Specialist ranking | What matters for silver | A number to know now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moving $50,000 or more from a 401(k) or IRA | Best gold IRA rollover companies | A direct transfer and a written quote in ounces | $50,000 bought 126.7 more Silver Eagle ounces at the lowest of 6 prices than at the highest (September 29, 2026) |
| Investing under about $25,000 | Best gold IRA companies for small investors | Flat fees vs a silver fund | $265 a year at STRATA is 2.65% of $10,000 |
| Lowest total cost | Gold IRA companies with the lowest total cost | Premium + bid + fees | A Silver Eagle lost 5.84% sold back the same day at Monex, a Gold Eagle 3.92% (August 12, 2026, before commission) |
| First-time buyer | Best gold IRA companies for beginners | Bullion only, a written price, cancellation that covers bullion | 4 of 15 gold IRA companies publish a spread range or cap |
| Wants segregated silver | Best gold IRA custodians | Which custodian and vault | GoldStar segregates silver at the Delaware Depository only as 1,000 oz bars |
| Wants a clean exit | Gold IRA buyback programs compared | The bid in writing | Monex's posted silver bids gave a 3.16% round trip on 100 oz bars (August 12, 2026, before commission) |
The same fee weighs very differently on each saver. STRATA's flat $265 a year is 2.65% of a $10,000 account but only 0.265% of $100,000. On the larger account, the markup matters far more than the fee.
For segregated silver, pick the custodian and vault before the seller.
How to Check Any "Best Silver IRA Companies" List in 60 Seconds#
You can test any "best silver IRA companies" list with 6 yes-or-no questions, and on September 29, 2026, none of the top five results printed a silver coin price. Ask the questions below in order.
- Does the page say who pays it, next to the list?
- Does it publish its weights and the date its data was collected?
- Does it print a silver price, or ounces per dollar, for any company?
- Does it mention spread caps or cancellation terms?
- Does it name companies it rejected, and why?
- Does it mention regulator or court records?
Two or more "no" answers mean you are reading advertising, not a test.
We read 26 results on 3 silver searches on September 29, 2026. Only 1 distinct page, Fortune's, is an editorial list that ranks silver sellers, and it shows no silver price. Four are gold-only lists, and 2 are press releases, one from 2024 still at #5.
Fortune's "Best silver IRA companies in 2026" (published October 15, 2025, no updated date) says it may earn affiliate revenue, money from links to the companies it lists. It publishes its weights, the share of the score each factor gets: 30% to star reviews, 10% to advertised discounts and 0% to legal record or contract terms. It ranks Lear Capital #1, a seller that paid $14.25 million in public settlements with no admission.
The same "2026" list shows the 2025 IRA limits, $7,000 and $8,000. The 2026 limits are $7,500 and $8,600 (IRS Notice 2025-67). Three minimums differ from the companies' own figures: Noble "$0" (Noble states $20,000), Allegiance "$0" ($10,000 per Money and Allegiance's site) and American Hartford Gold "$10,000" (it publishes none). It dates Birch to 2003; Birch says 2011. It calls a Noble sample coin the "Australian Silver Philharmonic," but the Philharmonic is Austrian.
Fortune also tells readers to use an "IRS-approved custodian." The IRS approves no coins, dealers or depositories. Its only approval list covers nonbank trustees, 73 entities as of April 1, 2026, and most metals custodians qualify instead as state-supervised trust companies under 26 U.S.C. 408(n). The storage rule is 408(m)(3)(B): the trustee must physically hold the metal.
Federal rules cover paid rankings. The FTC's Endorsement Guides call rankings determined by payments deceptive and say "a disclosure ... would be inadequate" (16 CFR 255.4(b), Example 3). Who ranks whom across the best of lists, and who pays, is set out in gold IRA best of lists compared.
6 Numbers to Get in Writing Before You Choose a Silver IRA Company#
Before you choose a silver IRA company, get six numbers in writing: price over spot, total ounces, tomorrow's bid, yearly fees, exit fees and the cancellation window.
The CFTC says to get "all fees, costs, commissions, and agreed retail price in writing BEFORE signing." It also says to ask "how much you would receive if you had to sell back the metal tomorrow" (CFTC, 10 Things, 2024). The full list of 12 questions is in how to choose a gold IRA company.
The 6 numbers below come in the order you should ask for them.
- Get the price per coin or bar, the coin year and its percent over spot, for every item.
- Get the total ounces your order buys.
- Get tomorrow's buyback bid for the same items.
- Get every yearly custodian and storage fee after any free period, with the dated fee schedule. Ask whether your silver is segregated or commingled.
- Get the exit fees for selling, transferring out and closing the account. Equity Trust's metals-only schedule charges $250 to close and $125 to transfer out (Rev. 081726).
- Get the cancellation window in days, what starts the clock and whether it covers bullion.
Your custodian, the trustee that holds the account, does not check the price for you. An SEC judge dismissed a case against Equity Trust in 2016 (Initial Decision No. 1030, June 27, 2016). The SEC and state regulators warn: "Self-directed IRA custodians generally do not evaluate the quality or legitimacy of any investment."
Silver IRA Companies vs Other Ways to Hold Silver for Retirement#
A silver IRA company is one of 4 ways to hold silver for retirement. The others are a bullion dealer with your own custodian, Silver Eagles bought inside a brokerage IRA and a silver fund in the IRA you already have. The metal comes before the route, and a gold vs silver IRA differs in weight, price swings and storage. Whether silver or gold fits you better is weighed in gold vs silver IRA.
Is a bullion dealer, Fidelity or a silver ETF cheaper than a silver IRA company?#
Often, yes: a bullion dealer with posted prices, a brokerage IRA that sells silver, or a silver fund can cost less than a seller with no price. On September 29, 2026, bullion dealers sold the same Silver Eagle for 8.28% to 29.92% over the Kitco bid. The full cost math of a bullion dealer vs gold IRA company is in bullion dealer vs gold IRA company.
The table below compares the three cheaper routes.
| Route | What you pay | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Bullion dealer + your own custodian | The dealer's posted price (8.28% to 29.92% over the Kitco bid on Sept 29, 2026) + custodian fees | You arrange the custodian and the shipping yourself |
| Fidelity IRA | Commission of 2.90%-0.99% to buy and 2.00%-0.75% to sell + 0.50% a year storage | Only Silver Eagles and bars |
| Silver ETF in your IRA | 0.30%-0.50% a year | You own shares, not coins |
Fidelity sells 1 oz Silver Eagles and bullion bars inside its own IRAs (fee schedule FA-FEES-0926). It charges a $44 minimum commission and 0.125% a quarter for storage, with a $1,000 IRA minimum purchase. Fees for buying silver bullion in a Fidelity IRA are listed on our Fidelity page.
The dealer spread inside Fidelity's price is not established from its fee schedule. Ask for the all-in price per ounce before you compare.
A silver ETF in your IRA owns fund shares, not coins: SLV charges 0.50% a year, and SIVR 0.30% under a waiver to February 28, 2027. Every fund is compared in gold and silver ETFs for your IRA.
Is a silver IRA a good investment?#
A silver IRA can suit someone who wants physical silver in a tax-deferred account, but silver swings far more than gold. The LBMA silver price fell 48.2% from its record of $118.45 on January 29, 2026, to $61.33 on September 28, 2026. From 1971 to 2025, silver's yearly volatility was 66.3%, against 27.1% for gold. The full answer to is a silver IRA a good investment is on our silver IRA guide.
Best silver IRA companies: frequently asked questions#
What is the best silver IRA company?#
No silver IRA company has earned a SafeOunce Score yet, as of September 29, 2026. The best fit is the seller that puts the most ounces in your account per dollar, in writing, under a fair contract. Compare written quotes from 3 sellers on the same day. You can compare gold IRA companies and dealers on the same fields.
Which company offers the best gold and silver IRAs?#
Most sellers offer both metals in one self-directed IRA, so compare them twice: on the gold price and on the silver price, per ounce, on the same day. One account can hold gold, silver, platinum and palladium. The 2026 contribution limit, $7,500 or $8,600 at age 50 and over, is shared across all your IRAs (IRS Notice 2025-67). The gold side is ranked in best gold IRA companies 2026.
What is the best company to buy silver from?#
For an IRA, the best seller is one that prints its silver price and buyback bid before you call. Five well-known brands share one owner, so check who owns whom. Gold.com (NYSE: GOLD, formerly A-Mark) owns JM Bullion, Provident, Silver.com and Monex, and 55.4% of Silver Gold Bull, which Forbes Advisor named Best Overall on June 26, 2026. For the company behind JM Bullion, Monex, Provident and more, see the company behind JM Bullion, Monex, Provident.
Can you buy silver for your IRA from any dealer?#
Usually yes: your self-directed IRA custodian can pay almost any dealer, as long as the silver is eligible and ships straight to the custodian's vault. APMEX, JM Bullion and SD Bullion name or run IRA paths. The custodian does not check the dealer's price, so get it in writing. How a self-directed IRA for gold and silver pays a dealer is explained there.
Can you keep silver IRA coins at home?#
No: the U.S. Tax Court treated 2,000 Silver Eagles kept at home through an IRA LLC as a taxable distribution of their $37,380 cost. The case is McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (November 18, 2021). The law requires the trustee's physical possession under 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B). The ruling and the red flags of a home storage gold IRA pitch are in home storage gold IRA.
Which silver coins are not allowed in an IRA?#
Silver below .999 fine that the law does not name is not allowed, such as 90% "junk" silver, classic Morgan and Peace dollars and pre-2013 Britannias. Classic dollars are .900 silver, older Britannias .958 and the Mexican Onza .925. Custodians also refuse graded coins sealed in slabs. Newer .999 Morgan dollars from 2021 on may be refused, so ask your custodian in writing. See the full list of coins you cannot hold in an IRA.
Are silver rounds allowed in an IRA?#
Yes, if they are at least .999 fine and made by a refiner your custodian accepts. At one dealer, a generic 1 oz round cost 4.7% over spot on September 29, 2026. At that price, $50,000 bought 778.6 ounces of rounds against 702.0 ounces of 2026 Silver Eagles. Refiner rules for silver rounds in an IRA are on a separate page.
What happens to your silver if the company goes bankrupt?#
Silver already delivered sits in your IRA's account at the vault, not on the seller's books, but paid orders that were never delivered become claims in the bankruptcy. Rosland Capital, which filed a liquidating Chapter 11 on July 2, 2026, owes about $49 million of paid but undelivered orders and about $11.8 million of unpaid buybacks. Check that your metal posts within about 28 days. The steps in is your gold really in your IRA work the same for silver.
