Birch Gold Group is a gold IRA seller, legally Birch Gold Group, LP of Des Moines, Iowa, with a BBB A+ grade and no regulator action found (September 29, 2026). It publishes its minimum and its account fees, but not its coin prices or its markup, which is the part of a coin's price that is not metal. So the real question is what you pay, and what the paperwork lets you do if something goes wrong.
A gold IRA is a retirement account that holds physical gold through a custodian, a trust company that holds the account for you. Gold IRA companies, such as Birch, Goldco and Augusta, are the dealers that set up these accounts and sell the metal. Birch Gold is one of the gold IRA companies SafeOunce checks with the same records, fees and contract questions.
This Birch Gold review covers its legal name, record and terms, then costs the $5,000 minimum, about $235 in yearly fees and a $100,000 account at four markups. It covers Birch Gold Group (birchgold.com), the precious metals dealer, not golf clubs or other businesses named Birch.
The 12 facts below come from Birch Gold's own pages, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Trustpilot (a public review website) and a federal court docket, each dated. The last row links to Birch's own site.

Our Birch Gold Verdict: A Low Entry Point, Clear Account Fees and Prices You Only Get by Phone#
Birch Gold Group is a real seller with few BBB complaints, a low $5,000 minimum and clear account fees, but it quotes coin prices only by phone. Birch Gold Group complaints at the BBB number 9 in three years, and SafeOunce found no regulator action (September 29, 2026). Every complaint category and court filing is on the page about Birch Gold Group complaints. Birch also names its custodians and vaults, and it pays the first year's fees above $50,000.
The spot price is today's market price for one ounce of raw metal. Birch charges more than spot for every coin, but it does not print how much more. What should a careful buyer get from Birch before sending money? Get three things in writing: the price per coin with its percent over spot, the buyback method, and the signed Transaction Agreement, which is Birch's purchase contract.
Look elsewhere if you have less than about $25,000 to move. Flat fees of about $235 a year take 1% to 4.7% of such a balance every year. Also look elsewhere if you will not accept confidential arbitration in Des Moines with fees split 50/50, or refunds only for counterfeit coins.
Who Is Birch Gold Group? Legal Name, Location and How It Works#
Birch Gold Group is a precious metals dealer that sells gold, silver, platinum and palladium coins and bars and arranges precious metals IRAs, operating from Des Moines, Iowa. It is a seller, not a bank, a fund or an adviser; its risk disclosure says Birch "does not provide investment advice". Birch says it has served "40,000+ Americans since 2011", a claim SafeOunce has not checked. Why does the legal name matter? Court cases and your contract use the legal name, and several unrelated businesses share the word "Birch".
Birch Gold Group, LP: the name to check (and the golf club that is not it)#
Birch Gold Group's legal name in federal court is Birch Gold Group, LP, a limited partnership, while its website and terms simply say "Birch Gold Group". The LP name appears in the caption of the 2025 federal case covered below. Name mix-ups are common. On September 29, 2026, Google's results for "birch gold reviews" included a golf club, Twin Birch Golf Club, and reviews of two other dealers.
When you check records, search "Birch Gold Group, LP" and "Birch Gold Group" with the city, Des Moines. Our guide shows how to check a gold IRA company by its legal name, step by step.
Why Birch Gold Group is in Des Moines, Iowa, not Burbank#
Birch Gold Group's headquarters is 309 Court Avenue, Suite 809, Des Moines, Iowa, as of September 29, 2026, while earlier reviews list Burbank, California. The BBB profile and Birch's website footer both give the Des Moines address. Birch's About page says it is "headquartered centrally in the United States" and names Iowa. Benzinga's review of January 21, 2025 still lists "Burbank, California".
Why does the address matter to you? Birch's website terms are governed by Iowa law and send disputes to arbitration in Des Moines, Iowa. Birch does not say why it moved, and SafeOunce does not guess.
Who runs Birch Gold Group?#
The BBB names Adrineh Telime as Birch Gold Group's chief operating officer and Andy Klein as marketing director, as of September 29, 2026. Birch Gold Group, LP does not publish who owns it. SafeOunce has not found a public record that names its owners or partners, so this review names none.
How a Birch Gold IRA works, step by step#
A Birch Gold IRA works in 5 steps, from opening a custodian account to metal arriving in a vault in your IRA's name. A self-directed IRA is an IRA that can hold assets other than funds, such as metal. The custodian is the trust company that legally holds the IRA and sends your statements, and the depository is the vault. The 5 steps are listed below.
- Open a self-directed IRA at a custodian Birch works with, usually Equity Trust Company or GoldStar Trust Company ($50 setup, per Birch's pages).
- Move money by a direct transfer or a rollover: "one to three weeks" per Birch's gold IRA page, "5-10 business days minimum" per its prices page.
- Choose coins or bars, and ask for the price per coin and the percent over spot.
- Sign the order, and the custodian pays Birch from your IRA.
- Check that the metal reaches a depository and shows on your custodian statement.
The vault step is the law: IRA bullion must be in the "physical possession" of a trustee (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B)).
For step 2, ask Birch for a gold IRA transfer, which moves money straight between custodians with no 60-day clock and no once-a-year limit.
Is Birch Gold a custodian?#
No: Birch Gold is the dealer that sells the metal, a separate trust company such as Equity Trust or GoldStar Trust is the custodian, and a vault stores the coins. The SEC, the federal investor-protection agency, warns that "self-directed IRA custodians generally do not evaluate the quality or legitimacy of any investment" (SEC investor alert).
Birch Gold's Complaint and Regulatory Record#
Birch Gold's record shows 9 BBB complaints in three years, one federal lawsuit that Birch itself filed and no regulator action found, as of September 29, 2026. Its Trustpilot profile tells a less tidy story: the highest one-star share among the ten largest sellers. The table gives each part of the record with its date and source.
| Record item | Birch Gold | Date and source |
|---|---|---|
| BBB grade and accreditation | A+, accredited since July 22, 2013 | BBB, September 29, 2026 |
| BBB complaints and reviews | 9 complaints closed in 3 years; 228 reviews | BBB, September 29, 2026 |
| Complaints per 100 BBB reviews | 3.9 | SafeOunce computation, September 29, 2026 |
| Trustpilot | 4.7 from 326 reviews; 89% five-star, 6% one-star; no recent history of asking for reviews | Trustpilot, September 29, 2026 |
| Federal cases found | 1: Birch Gold Group, LP v. Bishop Gold Group, LLC, with Birch as the plaintiff | C.D. Cal. No. 2:25-cv-09105, filed September 24, 2025 |
| Customer class actions found | None | SafeOunce searches, September 29, 2026 |

BBB and Trustpilot numbers, and what they disagree on#
Birch Gold has 9 BBB complaints closed in three years against 228 BBB reviews, about 3.9 complaints per 100 reviews, as of September 29, 2026. Its BBB grade is A+. BBB accreditation is a paid membership, and Birch has held it since July 22, 2013. How much does an A+ tell you? In the BBB's own rating method, 90 of the 100 points relate to complaints, and customer reviews do not count.
The table ranks the ten largest gold IRA sellers by BBB complaints per 100 BBB reviews, with their Trustpilot one-star share (September 29, 2026).
| Company | BBB complaints per 100 BBB reviews | Trustpilot one-star share |
|---|---|---|
| Lear Capital | 22.1 | 1% |
| American Hartford Gold | 13.9 | 2% |
| Priority Gold | 5.9 | 2% |
| Goldco | 4.2 | 3% |
| Birch Gold Group | 3.9 | 6% |
| Preserve Gold | 1.6 | 0% |
| Noble Gold | 1.2 | 1% |
| Augusta Precious Metals | 0.7 | 1% |
| Patriot Gold Group | 0 | 0% |
| Advantage Gold | 0 (9 reviews) | Under 1% |
Counts grow with sales volume, and disputes sent to confidential arbitration never reach the BBB. Sources: BBB and Trustpilot profiles, September 29, 2026.
The two sources disagree: few formal complaints, but the largest share of one-star reviews among the ten, about 20 of 326. Birch scores 4.7 on Trustpilot, with 89% five-star reviews. Its profile is marked as having no recent history of inviting reviews, so its reviews are mostly unprompted.
BBB and Trustpilot ratings both have limits. Trustpilot adds seven 3.5-star reviews to every company's score, and all ten sellers above get 89% to 99% five-star reviews. Why BBB and Trustpilot ratings rarely separate these companies is explained in our ratings guide.
What unhappy Birch Gold customers report#
Trustpilot's review summary for Birch Gold, as last read by SafeOunce, mentions "misleading pricing on specific alternative coin products". The summary is Trustpilot's automated digest of what reviewers write, not a SafeOunce finding. Separately, about 20 of Birch's 326 reviews (6%) are one-star (September 29, 2026).
The protection is the same for every seller: ask for 1-ounce bullion coins or bars, and get the percent over spot in writing before you pay. The complaints page sorts Birch's complaints by topic, with counts and dates.
Court cases involving Birch Gold#
The one federal case SafeOunce verified is a trademark lawsuit that Birch Gold Group, LP filed against a competitor, Bishop Gold Group, LLC. A trademark is a protected business name or logo.
Birch Gold Group, LP v. Bishop Gold Group, LLC (U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 2:25-cv-09105) was filed on September 24, 2025, under federal trademark law (15 U.S.C. 1051 and following). On February 16, 2026, the court sent the parties to a private mediator, a neutral person who helps both sides settle. It has set a jury trial for April 12, 2027 (CourtListener docket; Justia docket, as of September 29, 2026).
SafeOunce found no customer class action and no court ruling on Birch's prices in searches on September 29, 2026. Birch's own lawsuit page (July 2, 2026) says Birch "has never been sued by investors in the company". That is Birch's statement, and the complaints page checks the wider court record.
Regulator actions: none found#
SafeOunce found no CFTC, SEC or state regulator action against Birch Gold Group in searches on September 29, 2026. The CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) is the federal agency that brings fraud cases over precious metals sales. Regulator actions can take years to become public, so check again before you buy.
Other sellers do appear: every case SafeOunce tracks is in our list of precious metals IRA enforcement actions.
Awards, "best" labels and review sites#
Forbes Advisor labels Birch Gold "Best for Transparency", while Forbes' customer-sentiment score rates Birch's pricing and fees 1.4 of 5, the lowest in its table (audited June 26, 2026). Goldco ties Birch at 1.4. In Forbes' capture of December 13, 2025, Birch's label was "Strong Endorsements", not transparency.
How can both be true? Forbes weights spreads at only 10% of its score and coin availability at 25%, so a high-priced seller can still rank well. Money.com named Birch its "Fee Transparency" pick from January 2025 to April 2026, then dropped it on May 29, 2026. Birch appears on 4 of the 9 major "best gold IRA" lists SafeOunce checked (September 2026).
Review sites can be paid by the sellers they rank, and Birch runs such a program (see below). How gold IRA review sites are paid is explained on our reviews guide.
Birch Gold's Contract Terms: What Is Public and What Is Not#
Birch Gold publishes website terms with a binding arbitration clause, but not the Transaction Agreement you sign, so its cancellation window and price terms cannot be checked before you call. Arbitration means a private judge, called an arbitrator, decides a dispute instead of a court. JAMS is a private company that runs arbitrations, and AAA is the American Arbitration Association. The table compares the dispute and exit terms of four sellers, from documents read on September 29, 2026.
| Term | Birch Gold (website terms and risk disclosure) | American Hartford Gold (agreement, Sept. 2026) | Lear Capital (terms, Dec. 2025) | Advantage Gold (terms) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purchase agreement public | No | Yes | Yes | Terms of sale only |
| Spread range stated | Not published | Bullion 1%-19.99%; other coins up to 39.99% or 59.99% | 2%-35% | Not published |
| Cancellation | Not published; returns only for counterfeit coins within 90 days | 7 days, non-bullion only | 24 hours | You bear any market loss plus a fee |
| Arbitration forum | JAMS, Des Moines, Iowa law | JAMS, nearest office | JAMS, Los Angeles | AAA Consumer Rules |
| Arbitration fees | "Divided equally", subject to JAMS minimum standards | Not checked | Not checked | Consumer rules |
| Confidentiality | "Strictly confidential" | Not checked | Not checked | Confidential |
| Opt-out | None found | None | 30 days, but Lear may cancel the sale | 30 days |
| Claim deadline | None found | 1 year | 1 year + 1 day | Not checked |
| Buyback wording | "We do not make any money when we buy back" (blog) | The law prohibits a guarantee | The law prohibits a guarantee | "Buy back services" |
"Not checked" means SafeOunce has not yet verified that term in the document. Contracts differ most on cancellation and on who pays for a dispute, and all ten sellers are compared on gold IRA company contracts.
The Birch Gold Transaction Agreement is not published#
Birch Gold's purchase contract, the Transaction Agreement, is not on birchgold.com as of September 29, 2026, so you can read only its website terms and risk disclosure in advance. The website terms reach further than most. Their governing-law clause covers "(d) any transaction, communication or interaction between You and Birch Gold Group".
Ask Birch to email the Transaction Agreement and your invoice before you pay. The FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule requires sellers to tell you the total cost and quantity before you pay (16 CFR 310.3(a)(1)(i)).
Arbitration in Des Moines, costs split 50/50, results kept secret#
Birch Gold's terms send any dispute to private arbitration in Des Moines, Iowa, under Iowa law, with the fees "divided equally" and every detail kept "strictly confidential".
The $250 cap is JAMS Consumer Minimum Standard 7: "the only fee required to be paid by the consumer is $250" where the standards apply (JAMS). JAMS decides whether a metals purchase counts. For hardship, the hearing can be held in your county or by video.
You can claim only on your own, not in a class action (a group lawsuit), and SafeOunce found no opt-out or claim deadline. Every live dealer agreement SafeOunce read has an arbitration clause (consumer caps: $225 at AAA, $250 at JAMS). Advantage Gold's AAA consumer rules with a 30-day opt-out are the friendliest.
Returns, cancellation and the 3-to-5-year hold#
Birch Gold's risk disclosure says it accepts returns for refund only of counterfeit coins sent back in their original holders within 90 days, and it publishes no cancellation window.
Birch is open about the holding period, which many sellers leave out. But a 3-to-5-year hold does not ensure a gain. Birch's blog on gold over time says that after flat periods "the price has consistently moved higher" (read September 29, 2026), yet gold took 28 years to regain its 1980 high in dollar terms.
Can you undo a purchase later? Only as far as the paperwork allows, as our guide on how to get your money back from a gold IRA company explains.
Birch Gold Fees in 2026: Setup, Annual and Storage#
Birch Gold says custodian and storage fees "typically average around $235 per year", plus $50 to set up and $30 for the wire (FAQ updated September 28, 2026). Birch pays the first year's fees on accounts over $50,000. Those account fees are the small part of the cost; the markup on the coins, covered below, is the large part. The table shows what you pay in year one below and above $50,000, and in later years.
| Fee | Amount | Year 1 (under $50,000) | Year 1 (over $50,000) | Later years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | $50 | $50 | $0 | None |
| Wire | $30 | $30 | $0 | None |
| Custodian fee | $125 a year | $125 | $0 | $125 |
| Storage and insurance | $110 a year | $110 | $0 | $110 |
| Total | $315 | $0 | $235 |
The $110 is for non-segregated, or commingled, storage: you get back the same type and amount of metal, maybe not the same pieces. Segregated storage keeps your own coins apart. Among published gold IRA fees, Birch's sit at the low end. Every custodian and seller is compared on gold IRA fees.
Where Birch's $235 comes from: the custodian's fee schedule#
Birch's $235 matches Equity Trust's precious-metals-only fee schedule with non-segregated storage: $125 a year for the account plus $110 for storage (Rev. 081726). Birch's prices page says its example uses a "custom fee schedule from Equity Trust". Your own fees depend on the custodian and storage you get, so ask for the schedule in writing.
The table sets Birch's figure against the published schedules of the two custodians Birch names.
| Source | Setup | Yearly account fee | Shared storage | Segregated storage | Yearly total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birch figure (prices page, September 2026) | $50 | $125 | $110 | Not given | $235 |
| Equity Trust metals-only (FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726) | $50 | $125 | $110 | $160 | $235 shared, $285 segregated |
| GoldStar Trust (GTC Rev. 01/2026) | $50 | $90 | $125 | $225 minimum | $215 shared, $315 segregated |
Equity Trust fees vary by account type, which is why the schedule name matters. Its several schedules are explained on our page about Equity Trust fees.
Two fee figures on Birch's own pages#
Birch's own pages disagree by $10: its FAQ and prices page give $235 a year, while its gold IRA page gives $225. The gold IRA page, updated September 11, 2026, reads "Storage/Insurance: $100 Management Fees: $125". The FAQ, updated September 28, 2026, says "around $235".
Birch still does better than most here. It is one of four of the ten largest sellers that publish account fees, with Goldco, Noble Gold and Augusta (September 2026).
Fees Birch does not list: selling, moving and closing#
Birch's fee pages list no exit costs, but its custodians charge to sell metal, move it or close the account. The exit fees for each of Birch's two custodians are listed below.
- If your custodian is Equity Trust (metals-only schedule, Rev. 081726): $30 per sale of metal, $125 per in-kind distribution or transfer out, and $250 to close the account.
- If your custodian is GoldStar Trust (Rev. 01/2026): no fee to buy or sell, $75 per in-kind or partial transfer and $150 to close the account. Wires cost $50, and shipping is $10 plus cost.
An in-kind distribution means taking the coins out instead of cash. Every custodian's exit charges are compared on gold IRA termination fees.
Birch Gold Minimum Investment: $5,000, Not $10,000#
Birch Gold's minimum investment is $5,000, as of September 29, 2026. Its FAQ says Birch "currently requires a minimum investment of $5,000, though this amount can vary depending on market conditions and product availability". Several review sites still print $10,000, as the table shows.
| Source | Minimum shown | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Birch FAQ and gold IRA page | $5,000 | September 28, 2026 / September 11, 2026 |
| LendEDU review | $10,000 | February 11, 2026 |
| Benzinga review | $10,000 | January 21, 2025 |
| OWNx review | "~$5,000-$10,000" | July 3, 2026 |
| Forbes Advisor table | $5,000 | Audited June 26, 2026 |
The IRS sets no minimum for a gold IRA. The 2026 IRA contribution limit is $7,500, plus $1,100 at age 50 and older (IRS Notice 2025-67). So a $5,000 account can start from one year's contribution, while larger accounts usually start with a rollover.
Gold IRA minimums by company run from Birch's $5,000 to Augusta's $50,000, per each company's own FAQ (September 2026). Every published figure is compared on gold IRA minimums by company.
What $235 a year means at Birch's $5,000 minimum#
At Birch's $5,000 minimum, $235 a year in account fees equals 4.7% of your balance every year, and year one costs $315, or 6.3%, before any markup. The table shows what a $5,000 Birch Gold IRA pays in account fees, with the metal price held flat.
| $5,000 Birch Gold IRA | Cost | Share of $5,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 ($50 setup + $30 wire + $235) | $315 | 6.3% |
| Each later year | $235 | 4.7% |
| 10 years of account fees | $2,430 | 48.6% |
| 10 years plus a 5% markup and buyback gap (hypothetical) | $2,903 | 58.1% |
| 10 years plus a 20% markup and buyback gap (hypothetical) | $3,618 | 72.4% |
Other sellers' minimums carry less fee drag, meaning the share of the balance that fees take each year (published figures, September 2026). GoldenCrest's $250 on its $10,000 minimum is 2.5%. Noble Gold's $275-$285 on $20,000 is 1.375%-1.425%, from two Noble pages that disagree. Goldco's $275 on $25,000 is 1.10%.
A gold ETF is a fund that tracks the gold price. One with a 0.10% expense ratio, such as GLDM (per its 10-K), costs about $5 a year on $5,000 in an IRA you already have. For cheaper routes, see the best gold IRA companies for small investors.
Birch Gold's First-Year Fee Waiver: What It Is Worth#
Birch Gold pays the first year's fees on accounts over $50,000, which is worth at most about $315 at Equity Trust with shared storage. Birch's FAQ says it "covers the first year's fees for accounts over $50,000". Its prices page words the rule two ways, "if your initial purchase is $50,000 or more" and "for transfers over $50,000", so ask which one applies to you.
The waiver covers $50 for setup, $30 for the wire and $235 in yearly fees: $315 in total, or $365 with segregated storage at Equity Trust. One percentage point of markup on a $50,000 order is $500, and on $100,000 it is $1,000. So the free first year is worth less than one point of markup at $50,000, and less than a third of a point at $100,000.
Near the line, the wording matters. A $49,000 account pays $315 in year one. An account of exactly $50,000 pays $0 under "$50,000 or more" but $315 under "over $50,000". Ask which rule applies before you split or top up a transfer.
Unlike bonus-metal offers at some rivals, Birch's waiver is not tied to a special product line (none stated on its pages, September 29, 2026). What other sellers' no-fee gold IRA offers are worth is computed on our fee-waiver page.
Birch Gold Prices: What It Does Not Publish#
Birch Gold does not publish its coin prices or its markup: its own prices page says "we do not quote product prices online". It adds that "we don't know the exact Birch Gold prices until your order is finalized". Birch quotes prices by phone, and none are listed on birchgold.com as of September 29, 2026. Its fees blog (July 23, 2026) says: "Like any precious metals dealer, we charge a premium over the spot price."
A premium over spot is the price above the raw metal value. The spread is the dealer's price minus its cost, as a share of what you pay, and the bid is what a dealer pays you back. Only 4 of 15 operating sellers publish a spread range in their contracts, so gold IRA markups and spreads stay hidden. Every published spread range is on gold IRA markups and spreads.
Birch's reason is that prices change daily and IRA funding takes days. That is true, and it is also why the percent over spot, not a dollar price, is the number to ask for. The CFTC says legitimate dealers' spreads are often under 20%, while fraudulent dealers' spreads can exceed 300% (CFTC, 2024). How big is an unpublished spread in dollars?
How much gold must rise before you break even#
At a 20% markup, gold must rise about 31% before a customer who sells back gets back to even. The extra rise is needed because a dealer's buyback bid sits below its own cost. The table shows the rise needed at four markups.
| Spread | Rise needed to reach dealer cost | Rise needed including the buyback gap |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | 5.3% | 10.4% |
| 10% | 11.1% | 16.6% |
| 20% | 25.0% | 31.1% |
| 30% | 42.9% | 49.9% |
Test your own markup in the gold IRA break-even calculator.
Birch's 0.15% example leaves out the markup#
Birch's prices page says $235 a year on a $150,000 rollover "works out to just 0.15%", but that figure leaves out the markup on the coins. The math on fees alone is right: $235 divided by $150,000 is 0.157%. A 5% markup on $150,000, though, is $7,500, about 32 years of $235 fees. A 20% markup is $30,000.
What a $100,000 Birch Gold IRA Costs: Year 1 and 10 Years#
A $100,000 Birch Gold IRA at Equity Trust with shared storage costs $0 in account fees in year one and $2,115 over ten years, because Birch pays the first year. If you sell back, a markup of 5% to 30% can add $9,453 to $33,281 more. The first table shows the account fees from Birch's prices page (September 2026).
| Cost | Year 1 | 10 years |
|---|---|---|
| Setup ($50) | $0 (paid by Birch) | $0 |
| Wire ($30) | $0 (paid by Birch) | $0 |
| Custodian fee ($125 a year) | $0 | $1,125 |
| Storage ($110 a year) | $0 | $990 |
| Dealer markup | Not published | Not published |
| Total account fees | $0 | $2,115 |
| Total with segregated storage at Equity Trust | $0 | $2,565 |
| Exit fees | Not in Birch's figures | At Equity Trust: $280 to sell once and close the account |
The table adds the markup and buyback gap to Birch's account fees, with the metal price held flat.
| Markup | Day-one sale value of $100,000 | Lost to markup and buyback gap | 10 years of fees | 10-year total cost | Share of $100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | $90,547 | $9,453 | $2,115 | $11,568 | 11.6% |
| 10% | $85,781 | $14,219 | $2,115 | $16,334 | 16.3% |
| 20% | $76,250 | $23,750 | $2,115 | $25,865 | 25.9% |
| 30% | $66,719 | $33,281 | $2,115 | $35,396 | 35.4% |
At a 5% markup, fees and markup take about 12% of $100,000 over ten years. At 30%, they take more than a third. Segregated storage adds only $450 over ten years, so the markup decides what you pay.
Your first custodian statement values metal at market value, not at what you paid. Equity Trust's disclosure says statement values "do not include any markups, commissions or premiums from the precious metals dealer". At a 20% markup, $100,000 shows as about $80,000 of metal, before any buyback gap.
For comparison, buying and selling a 1-ounce Gold Eagle the same day at a large online dealer cost about 5% to 7% on September 29, 2026 (SD Bullion snapshot: 5.39%). With shared storage, Birch's ten-year account fees ($2,115) are $185 lower than Goldco's published $2,300 (September 2026). That gap is less than a quarter of one point of markup on the same $100,000.

Birch Gold Buyback and Your Custodian Statement#
Birch Gold says "we do not make any money when we buy back", but it publishes no buyback price formula, payment time or written promise to buy. The claim appears on its fees blog, updated July 23, 2026, as something that sets Birch apart from "many precious metals dealers". Its gold IRA page adds that a specialist can give "an up-to-date buyback quote, which will be both more detailed and more accurate than the statements sent by your custodian".
A gold IRA statement and a buyback quote measure different things. Why a gold IRA statement shows less than you paid is explained on our statement guide.
Custodian statements value metal without "any markups, commissions or premiums from the precious metals dealer", in Equity Trust's words. So a gap on your first statement is usually the markup becoming visible. In a petition against Lear Capital, not Birch, the New York Attorney General said investors saw their holdings had "declined by a third" on their first statement (June 17, 2021).
On the pages SafeOunce read on September 29, 2026, Birch does not call its buyback "guaranteed". Five dealer contracts, including American Hartford Gold's and Lear Capital's, say the law prohibits guaranteeing a repurchase. What each contract says is on gold IRA buyback programs compared.
Birch Gold Products: Bullion, Premium Coins and What to Ask For#
Birch Gold sells gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion plus coins priced higher for their mint, size or scarcity, and it publishes neither price. Its FAQ says premiums reflect "limited production, special minting techniques, fractional size, sovereign-mint origin, availability and market demand". Its one-star reviews center on such coins. The three product types and the rule for each are listed below.
- Bullion coins and bars: the American Gold Eagle is eligible by name under 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(A). Bars need at least .995 gold, .999 silver or .9995 platinum and palladium under 408(m)(3)(B).
- Fractional and "special" coins: a fractional coin is under one ounce, such as a 1/4-ounce platinum coin Birch lists. It must meet the same rule and costs more per ounce.
- Proof and limited-mintage coins: a proof coin has a collector finish, and a limited mintage is a small, higher-priced production run. Custodians decide what they accept, and markups are higher.
How much higher? Birch lists the American Palladium Eagle, so here is a retail benchmark for it, not a Birch price. The bullion coin sold for $2,394.49 at JM Bullion on August 5, 2026, 71.7% over spot. A 2025-W reverse proof graded PF70, the top grade, was listed at $3,264.72 on September 29, 2026, 162% over spot.
The Gold Eagle is only .9167 gold, yet the tax code names it; why is explained on American Gold Eagle in an IRA.
The CFTC calls "semi-numismatic", a sales label for coins between bullion and rare coins, "a made-up industry term". For an IRA, ask for 1-ounce bullion coins or bars and the percent over spot for each.
What custodians accept for proof coins in an IRA is on our proof coin page.
Birch Gold Custodians and Depositories#
Birch Gold names two custodians, Equity Trust Company and GoldStar Trust Company, and five depositories its customers use, as of September 29, 2026. Its FAQ says: "We most frequently use Equity Trust Company and Goldstar Trust Company." Every custodian's charter and fees are compared on gold IRA custodians.
Neither custodian's deposit insurance reaches your metal. FDIC and SIPC insurance never cover IRA metal; the vault's own insurance does, and by default it pays metal value, not premiums.
GoldStar Trust is cheaper on paper: $215 a year with shared storage (Rev. 01/2026) against $235 at Equity Trust (Rev. 081726). Our page on GoldStar Trust fees lists the full schedule.
The table lists the five vaults Birch's FAQ names, with what each one is.
| Depository | What it is |
|---|---|
| Delaware Depository | Private vault in the Wilmington area; $1 billion all-risk insurance plus $100 million contingent cover, which pays metal value (its FAQ, September 2026) |
| Brink's Global Services | Security company; Equity Trust added it for IRAs in 2019 |
| International Depository Services | Division of Dillon Gage, with vaults in Delaware, Texas and Canada |
| Texas Precious Metals Depository | Private vault in Shiner, Texas, run by a division of the dealer Texas Precious Metals |
| Texas Bullion Depository | Texas state agency in the Comptroller's office, in Leander |
Birch's page on International Depository Services calls it "one of only eight COMEX-approved depositories". COMEX is the main US gold futures exchange, and CME's gold report of September 28, 2026 lists 11 approved vaults. The status is per location: IDS of Delaware is listed, IDS of Texas is not. COMEX approval covers large trading bars, not your IRA coins, and it is not an IRS approval.
You should ask Birch the 3 questions below about custody before you buy.
- Which custodian will hold my IRA, and may I choose another?
- Which depository will store my metal, and is the account titled to my IRA?
- Is the storage segregated or shared, and at what yearly price?
Vault insurance and locations are compared on gold IRA depositories.
Birch Gold Statements That Conflict With IRS Rules#
Five statements on Birch Gold's own pages conflict with current IRS and tax rules, as of September 29, 2026. Each one is listed below with the rule that applies.
- RMD age: Birch's gold IRA page (updated September 11, 2026) says required minimum distributions (RMDs), the yearly withdrawals the law requires, apply to "account holders aged 72 and older". The age is 73 if you were born 1951 to 1958 and 75 if born 1960 or later (26 U.S.C. 401(a)(9)(C)(v); IRS RMD FAQs). Born in 1959, it is 73 under proposed regulations.
- "IRS-approved depositories": Birch's homepage says "Your metals are stored with IRS-approved depositories like Delaware Depository and Brink's". The IRS approves no depository: the law requires bullion to be "in the physical possession of a trustee" (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B)). The IRS's list covers nonbank trustees only (73 on April 1, 2026).
- "Fully insured": the same homepage sentence ends "fully insured". Vault insurance pays metal value, not premiums, and excludes war and government confiscation, according to Delaware Depository's FAQ.
- "Capital gains taxes" on early withdrawals: Birch's blog on gold IRA pros and cons says early withdrawals bring "capital gains taxes on profits". Traditional IRA withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income (26 U.S.C. 408(d)(1)), usually plus a 10% additional tax before age 59½ (26 U.S.C. 72(t)).
- Nevada storage and tax: a Birch page says Nevada storage means residents "don't need to worry about paying a capital gains tax when cashing in their IRAs". State tax on an IRA withdrawal follows where you live, not where the vault is.
Gold IRA required minimum distributions can be taken in cash or in metal. The current ages and how to take them are on gold IRA required minimum distributions.
The same gold IRA page gets the 2026 contribution limit right: $7,500, plus $1,100 at 50 and older. Its wording for metals is mostly "IRA-eligible", which is the correct term.
"IRA-approved precious metals" is a common way to say metals that meet 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3). What the tax code allows is on IRA-approved precious metals.
Birch Gold Pros and Cons#
Birch Gold's six strengths are about easy entry and published account fees; its six weaknesses are about prices, dispute terms and statements it does not put in writing. The table sets them side by side, as of September 29, 2026.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lowest published minimum among the big sellers ($5,000) | No coin prices or markup published |
| Publishes typical account fees (one of four top-ten sellers that do) | Transaction Agreement not public |
| Pays the first year's fees above $50,000 | Arbitration in Des Moines, fees split 50/50, results confidential |
| Names its two custodians and five depositories | Returns only for counterfeit coins |
| BBB A+, accredited since 2013; 9 complaints in 3 years | Highest Trustpilot one-star share of the top ten (6%) |
| No regulator action found | Site statements that conflict with tax rules (RMD at 72, "IRS-approved depositories", "capital gains" on IRA withdrawals) |
Who Birch Gold Suits, and Who Should Walk Away#
Birch Gold suits a buyer moving $50,000 or more who buys plain bullion and gets prices, buyback terms and the Transaction Agreement in writing. It suits small savers least, even though it lets them in. The table gives a verdict for six reader situations (Birch figures as of September 29, 2026).
| If you... | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Have under $25,000 | Allowed from $5,000, but costly | Fees take 1% to 4.7% a year; a low-cost gold ETF in an IRA you have costs far less: see gold IRA vs gold ETF |
| Move $25,000 to $50,000 | Workable if bullion only | Fees equal 0.47% to 0.94% a year |
| Move $50,000 or more | The first-year waiver applies | Compare the percent over spot first: one point of markup outweighs the waiver |
| Want a written contract and price first | Ask before any call ends | Ask for the Transaction Agreement and an itemized quote; if Birch will not send them, walk away |
| Will not accept confidential arbitration with split fees | Choose another seller | Pick one whose terms use consumer rules or allow an opt-out |
| Are checking a parent's purchase | Compare two documents | Set the first custodian statement against the invoice |
You should ask Birch Gold the 6 questions below before any money moves.
- Ask the price per coin and the percent over spot for each item.
- Ask what Birch would pay for the same coins tomorrow, and how that price is set.
- Ask for the Transaction Agreement and invoice by email before paying.
- Ask how many days you have to cancel, and from when.
- Ask which custodian and depository Birch uses, and for the fee schedule with its revision date.
- Ask whether JAMS consumer rules apply to you under Birch's arbitration clause.

How SafeOunce Rates Birch Gold#
SafeOunce rates Birch Gold on 7 criteria worth 100 points, from documents and a written price quote, and any item Birch does not disclose scores zero. The rating card above is computed from methodology version 1.0, not written by hand. It shows "Rating pending" until Birch's written quote and Transaction Agreement arrive. The table lists each criterion, its points and Birch's inputs as of September 29, 2026.

Birch triggers none of the exclusion gates (closed, sanctioned or on a watch list) as of September 29, 2026. If it does not send a written quote and its Transaction Agreement within 10 business days of a documented request, it is listed as "Not rated: would not disclose". Weights and evidence rules are on how SafeOunce rates gold IRA companies.
How Does Birch Gold Compare With Other Gold IRA Companies?#
Birch Gold has the lowest published minimum and some of the lowest account fees of the big sellers, but like most of them it publishes no markup range. On BBB complaints it sits in the middle; on Trustpilot one-star reviews it sits last. The table compares Birch with five rivals on the same four fields, as of September 29, 2026.
| Company | IRA minimum | Account fees published | Spread range published | BBB complaints per 100 reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birch Gold Group | $5,000 | About $235 a year ($225 on one page) | No | 3.9 |
| Goldco | $25,000 | Yes, $275 a year segregated | No | 4.2 |
| Augusta Precious Metals | $50,000 per Augusta's FAQ (updated Sept. 23, 2026) | Per the same FAQ: $285 year 1, $235 after | No | 0.7 |
| American Hartford Gold | Not published | No | Yes: bullion up to 19.99%, others up to 39.99% or 59.99% | 13.9 |
| Noble Gold | $20,000 | Yes, but two pages disagree ($80 + $275 a year, or $50 + $285 a year) | No | 1.2 |
| Lear Capital | Not published | No | Yes: 2%-35% | 22.1 |
The best gold IRA companies are ranked on the same records, with the markup counted. Rankings by real cost are on best gold IRA companies.
Birch Gold vs Goldco#
Birch Gold's minimum is one fifth of Goldco's ($5,000 vs $25,000), and its ten-year account fees on $100,000 are $185 lower with shared storage. Goldco has the lower Trustpilot one-star share: 3%, against Birch's 6% (September 29, 2026). The Goldco vs Birch Gold Group side-by-side table is on Goldco vs Birch Gold Group.
Birch appears in the five other comparison pairs listed below.
- Birch Gold Group vs Noble Gold
- Birch Gold Group vs Lear Capital
- Augusta Precious Metals vs Birch Gold Group
- American Hartford Gold vs Birch Gold Group
- Birch Gold Group vs Priority Gold
Birch Gold's celebrity endorsements#
Birch Gold's homepage lists Ron Paul, Dan Bongino, Stephen K. Bannon, Megyn Kelly, Chad Prather and Lance Wallnau as endorsers, as of September 29, 2026. The CFTC warns in general that fraudulent dealers "target their ads to political or religious programming just to gain your trust" (CFTC release 8881-24). This is not an allegation against Birch. Other sellers use celebrity gold IRA endorsements too, and who endorses which seller is tracked on celebrity gold IRA endorsements.
The free Birch Gold info kit and the calls that follow#
Birch Gold's free 2026 information kit is a lead form: it requires your phone number and asks you to authorize "pre-recorded/artificial voice communications and messages, ringless voicemails, and auto-dialers". The kit runs 24 pages, and the form allows up to 6 texts a month, with "Consent not a condition to buy". Free gold IRA kits from other sellers work the same way. What is inside free gold IRA kits, and who calls next, is on our kit guide.
How to stop gold IRA cold calls and texts is on our calls guide.
Does Birch Gold pay review sites?#
Yes: Birch Gold's affiliate page says "We pay for every qualified lead and offer commissions on every sale throughout the customer's lifetime", but it does not publish the amounts. It reports "less than 200" affiliates in 15 years, in a program shared with BitIRA (affiliate page, September 29, 2026).
Many review pages are paid when you contact a company; see who pays SafeOunce. SafeOunce takes no money from any company named on this page.
Does Birch Gold sell physical gold outside an IRA?#
Yes: Birch Gold also sells coins and bars for home delivery, and its prices page says home delivery carries no custodian or storage fees beyond the metal's cost (September 29, 2026).
Can you roll a 401(k) into a Birch Gold IRA?#
Yes, if your plan allows it: you can fund a Birch Gold IRA with a direct rollover from a former employer's 401(k). A direct 401(k) to gold IRA rollover avoids the 20% withholding that applies when the plan pays you (IRC 3405(c)). The steps are on 401(k) to gold IRA rollover.
Is Birch Gold Group a publicly traded company?#
No stock listing for Birch Gold was found: it operates as Birch Gold Group, LP, a limited partnership, and publishes no financial statements.
Can you keep Birch Gold IRA metal at home?#
No: IRA bullion must be in the physical possession of a trustee, and Birch's gold IRA page says a depository physically stores the gold. In McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (2021), the Tax Court treated coins kept at home as taken out of the IRA. The case is covered on home storage gold IRA.
What if a parent already bought from Birch Gold?#
Start by comparing the first custodian statement with the Birch invoice: the gap between them is roughly the markup your parent paid. Birch refunds only counterfeit coins returned within 90 days. So the practical options are to hold, to sell back after a written quote, or to take the metal out in kind. If a parent is pressured into a gold IRA, act before any more money moves. The steps for families are on when a parent is pressured into a gold IRA.
What is the downside of a gold IRA with Birch Gold?#
The main downside is cost: about $235 a year in account fees (Birch FAQ, September 2026) plus a markup Birch does not publish, and gold pays no interest or dividends. Critics such as Dave Ramsey make the same point about gold in general. The general case is on gold IRA pros and cons.
