SafeOunce ranks gold IRA companies on what you really pay, what their contracts let them do and their legal record, and no company can pay for its place. We use each company's own contracts and fee schedules, plus court and regulator records. A gold IRA company is the dealer that sells you the metal and sets up the account. A custodian (a trust company) legally holds your IRA.
We checked 15 companies that sell gold for IRAs as of September 29, 2026. None has a SafeOunce Score yet, because a score needs a written price quote and the customer agreement. We also leave out 9 sellers. Lear Capital settled cases over its prices, and 8 others failed, closed or were punished by a regulator or court. Most other lists mention none of this.
Start by deciding whether you need a gold IRA company at all. Then see what the 14 companies we list put in writing, and what a markup costs in dollars. Everything about the accounts themselves is in our independent precious metals IRA guide.
The table below sums up what we checked, as of September 29, 2026.
| Item | Result and source |
|---|---|
| Companies checked | 15 operating sellers of IRA gold |
| Not ranked | 9: Lear Capital under our pricing-settlement rule, plus 8 that failed, closed or were sanctioned (see Legal Record) |
| Companies with a SafeOunce Score | 0 so far; a score needs a written price quote and the customer agreement |
| Publish a spread range or cap in their contract | 4 of 15: American Hartford Gold, Lear Capital, Preserve Gold, American Bullion |
| Publish live prices online | 1 of 15: Orion Metal Exchange |
| Publish both account fees and a spread range | 1 of 15: American Bullion |
| Publish a cancellation window of at least 7 days, in every state, that covers IRA bullion | 1 of 15: Augusta, in its FAQ (a company statement); Priority reaches 8 days only in some states |
| Lowest published IRA minimum | $5,000 (Birch Gold Group) |
| Customer money at 3 recent failed or sanctioned sellers | More than $131 million (Rosland Capital, Red Rock Secured, Regal Assets) |
| Companies that can pay for a place in this ranking | None (our published rule) |
The price words below appear all through this page, each shown on the same $100,000 order.
| Price word | What it means | Example on $100,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Spot price | The market price of one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of pure metal that day | The yardstick every other price is measured against |
| Spread (we also say markup) | The share of your price that is not metal; the dealer keeps it | At a 20% spread, you get about $80,000 of metal |
| Premium over spot | The same gap measured against the metal's value | A 20% spread equals a 25% premium |
| Buyback bid | What the dealer pays you when you sell back | Usually the wholesaler's highest list bid, about 95.31% of what the coins cost the dealer |
| Buyback gap | The distance between that bid and the dealer's cost, about 4.7% | About $3,750 on $80,000 of metal |
| Round trip | Buying and selling back the same day: spread plus buyback gap | About 23.7% at a 20% spread; about 5.4% on plain bullion coins |
Should You Use a Gold IRA Company at All? 5 Checks Before You Pick One#
You need a gold IRA company only if you want physical gold held for your IRA and have enough to invest that its fixed fees stay small. Under about $25,000, or if you need the money within five years, cheaper routes usually win.
The company sells the coins, and a depository (a private vault) stores them for your custodian. If you are still deciding what a gold IRA is and how to open one, start there.
Run the 5 checks below in order, and stop at the first one that fits you.
- Under $25,000 to invest. Fixed costs eat a small account: a $10,000 bullion IRA loses about $3,720 (37.2%) in 10 years (worked example below). A gold ETF (a fund that owns gold and trades like a stock) at 0.10% a year (GLDM, 2025-2026 10-K filings) costs about $100 on $10,000 over the same 10 years. You should compare a gold IRA with a gold ETF first; the gap is shown in gold IRA vs gold ETF.
- Money needed within about 5 years. At a 20% spread, gold must rise about 31% before you break even, because you pay the spread going in and the buyback gap going out.
- You want the coins shipped to you later. Taking coins out of the IRA is an in-kind distribution: the custodian ships them instead of selling them. Equity Trust charges $125 for it, and GoldStar $75 plus a $10 charge and shipping (2026 fee schedules).
- Moving a 401(k) or IRA. Use a direct transfer only: the money moves custodian to custodian, never through your hands. If a plan makes a check out to you, it must hold back 20% for federal income tax (IRC 3405(c)). Why the method matters is in direct vs indirect rollover.
- Otherwise. Shortlist 3 companies from the ranking table, ask each for a written quote on the same day and compare them.
The worked example below shows where the $3,720 in check 1 goes.
| $10,000 bullion IRA at Equity Trust (metals-only fees, schedule FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726), gold price flat | Cost |
|---|---|
| Round trip on plain bullion (buy and sell back), 5.4% | $540 |
| Setup fee | $50 |
| Yearly fee, $285 x 10 years | $2,850 |
| Exit fee | $280 |
| Total over 10 years | $3,720 (37.2% of $10,000) |
| Gold ETF at 0.10% a year, same 10 years | About $100 |
How much of your savings should go into gold? No sourced rule exists; the "5-10%" figures on ranking pages cite none. Lear Capital's own terms (December 2025) say no more than 20% of available investment funds. Moving everything multiplies the damage. In a SafeOunce illustration, $300,000 moved at a 64% markup (the SEC's average on Safeguard Metals' silver coins) loses about $117,073 on day one; moving 20% would lose about $23,415.
If none of checks 1 to 4 fits you, which company should you call? The ranking table below shows what each one puts in writing.
The SafeOunce Ranking: 15 Gold IRA Companies Checked on Cost, Contracts and Legal Record#
We have not scored any gold IRA company yet (September 29, 2026), so the 14 companies below are listed by how much they put in writing, not by quality. Lear Capital, the 15th company checked, is set aside; see Legal Record.
Each company gets one point for each of 6 facts it puts in writing, from its minimum to its cancellation window, with ties listed alphabetically. Bullion means coins and bars valued for their metal, not their rarity.
A spread cap is the highest markup a contract allows, and a spread range is the band a contract calls typical. Disclosing a high cap is not the same as charging less; it means you can read the limit before you sign.
The table below lists the 14 companies in interim order, as of September 29, 2026 unless another document date is shown.
| # | Company | Status | Score | Disclosures (of 6) | IRA minimum | Spread range or cap in contract | Cancellation window | Record found (September 29, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | American Bullion review | Operating | Rating pending | 3 | Recommends $10,000 (not a minimum) | Range, not a cap: "typically 7%-23%" (agreement dated October 2024) | 15-day returns on semi-numismatic and numismatic coins only (possible 3% restocking fee); none for bullion; greater of $250 or 0.50% if you transfer and buy nothing | No regulator action found |
| 2 | Augusta Precious Metals review | Operating | Rating pending | 3 | $50,000 (Augusta FAQ, updated September 23, 2026) | Not public (old agreement web address says "no longer available") | Up to 7 calendar days after confirmation, all transactions (Augusta FAQ) | No customer-fraud or regulator case found |
| 3 | Preserve Gold review | Operating | Rating pending | 3 | Not published | Bullion up to 20%; IRA "generally up to 34.99%" (agreement dated June 2025) | 24 hours after invoice | None found |
| 4 | American Hartford Gold review | Operating | Rating pending | 2 | Not published | Bullion 1.00% to 19.99%; up to 39.99% and 59.99% on other coins (agreement dated September 2026) | 7 days, non-bullion (collector and special coins) only | A customer's lawsuit was sent to private arbitration (Mathys, federal court in Illinois, 2020); no regulator action found |
| 5 | Birch Gold Group review | Operating | Rating pending | 2 | $5,000 | Not published | Not published | None found |
| 6 | Goldco review | Operating | Rating pending | 2 | $25,000 | Not published | Not published | Settled a group lawsuit over marketing text messages (Summerton, federal court in Wisconsin, final approval March 26, 2026); no regulator action found |
| 7 | GoldenCrest Metals review | Operating (BBB business start November 18, 2023) | Rating pending | 2 | $10,000 | Not published | Not published | None found |
| 8 | Noble Gold Investments review | Operating | Rating pending | 2 | $20,000 | Not published | Not published | None found |
| 9 | Allegiance Gold review | Operating | Rating pending | 1 | $10,000 (reported by Money.com, repeated on Allegiance's site) | Not published | Sales final (15-day replacement only) | None found |
| 10 | Orion Metal Exchange review | Operating | Rating pending | 1 | Not published | Not published; live prices online (1 oz Gold Eagle 5.90% over spot, September 29, 2026) | Not published | Orion is suing Money Group; its claims are unproven (pending case) |
| 11 | Priority Gold review | Operating | Rating pending | 1 | Not published | Not published (18% fee if it sells your collector coins for you after 60 months) | 3 business days to 8 days, by state | None found (limited search) |
| 12 | Advantage Gold review | Operating | Rating pending | 0 | Not published | Not published | After confirmation you bear any market loss plus a fee | None found |
| 13 | Patriot Gold Group review | Operating | Rating pending | 0 | Not published | Not published | Not published | None found |
| 14 | U.S. Money Reserve review | Operating | Rating pending | 0 | Not published (its fee offer needs a $200,000 rollover) | Not published | IRA terms not published | See review page |
"Rating pending" means we do not yet hold the quote and agreement a score needs. "None found" means our research of September 29, 2026 found no regulator action or fraud case under the legal name we searched; it never means a clean record. Augusta's and Allegiance's minimums are company statements.
The table below matches each need to what companies put in writing (September 29, 2026).
| If you want... | Companies that put it in writing | Ask them for this |
|---|---|---|
| To start with under $20,000 | Birch Gold Group ($5,000); GoldenCrest Metals and Allegiance Gold ($10,000, Allegiance per Money.com and its site) | Yearly fees after any free period |
| To read the contract before you call | American Bullion, Preserve Gold, American Hartford Gold | The date of the version you will sign |
| To see live prices | Orion Metal Exchange | Tomorrow's buyback bid on the same coins |
| A window of at least 7 days that covers bullion | Augusta Precious Metals (its FAQ, a company statement) | The written Transaction Agreement before you pay |
| Consumer arbitration rules | Advantage Gold (AAA consumer rules, 30-day opt-out) | How it treats a cancelled order, since its terms make you bear any market loss |
Every one of the gold IRA companies we track, including those that failed, is listed with its status. We re-sort the ranking table by SafeOunce Score once the first scores exist.
Why no gold IRA company has a SafeOunce Score yet#
No gold IRA company has a SafeOunce Score yet, because 45 of our 100 points depend on documents no company has given us. We score only what a company puts in writing, and unknown data scores 0 points.
The 3 items a SafeOunce Score still needs from each gold IRA company are listed below.
- A written price quote for the same $50,000 IRA order of 1 oz Gold Eagles and 1 oz Maple Leafs, checked against the spot price that day. It measures the premium (15 points).
- The customer agreement you would sign. It feeds contract fairness (15 points) and buyback terms (5 points).
- A mystery shop, which means we ask for a quote like any customer and record what the salesperson says. It feeds product mix and sales pressure (10 points).
Why not score companies from their websites? Websites show almost none of the price: in a wider check of 17 sellers, none showed the exact spread before an order.
A company that sends nothing within 10 business days of our request is listed as "Not rated: would not disclose." Separately, we re-score every quarter; each score and rank change is dated, with its reason, in the SafeOunce ratings changelog.
What each gold IRA company shows you before you call: 6 written disclosures#
Only 4 of 15 gold IRA companies publish a markup range or cap in their contract, and only 1, Orion Metal Exchange, shows live prices online (September 29, 2026). Each of the 6 disclosures answers one question you would otherwise have to ask a salesperson.
A spread cap tells you the most the markup can be, and live prices let you compare a coin with spot. A window that covers bullion gives you time to check the quote after you sign. The table below shows which disclosures each company published as of September 29, 2026 (Y = yes, N = no; "Partial" counts as 0).
| Company | IRA minimum published | Account fees published | Spread range or cap in a published contract | Live prices online | Customer agreement online | Cancellation window covering IRA bullion | Total "Y" |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| American Bullion | N (recommends $10,000) | Y | Y (range) | N | Y | N | 3 |
| Augusta Precious Metals | Y | Y | N | N | N | Y | 3 |
| Preserve Gold | N | N | Y | N | Y | Y (24 hours) | 3 |
| Lear Capital (not ranked) | N | N | Y | N | Y | Y (24 hours) | 3 |
| American Hartford Gold | N | N | Y | N | Y | N (non-bullion only) | 2 |
| Birch Gold Group | Y | Y | N | N | N (website terms only) | N | 2 |
| GoldenCrest Metals | Y | Y (company statement) | N | N | N | N | 2 |
| Goldco | Y | Y | N | N | N | N | 2 |
| Noble Gold Investments | Y | Y (two pages conflict) | N | N | N | N | 2 |
| Allegiance Gold | Y | Partial ("typical" figures that differ from Money.com's report) | N | N | N | N | 1 |
| Orion Metal Exchange | N | N | N | Y | N | N | 1 |
| Priority Gold | N | N | N | N | N | Y (3 business days to 8 days) | 1 |
| Advantage Gold | N | Partial (custodian schedule only) | N | N | N | N | 0 |
| Patriot Gold Group | N | N | N | N | N | N | 0 |
| U.S. Money Reserve | N | N | N | N | N (user agreement excludes the IRA program) | N | 0 |
Only American Bullion publishes both its account fees and a spread range. Augusta's entries come from its FAQ, updated September 23, 2026, and are company statements, since its agreement is not online. Noble counts as Y for fees because both of its conflicting figures sit on its own pages.
Almost no company shows you the full price before you call, so the phone call, not the website, is where your markup is set.
Put the written quotes you receive side by side in the gold IRA company comparison tool.
How SafeOunce Ranks Gold IRA Companies: 7 Criteria, 100 Points#
SafeOunce scores gold IRA companies on 7 criteria worth 100 points, and 65 points go to the price you pay, the contract you sign and the company's legal record. The table below lists the 7 criteria, their points and the evidence behind each.
| Criterion | Points | What we measure | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. Price paid | 30 (A1 measured premium 15, A2 price disclosure 10, A3 buyback terms 5) | Premium over spot on a written $50,000 quote; whether prices and spread caps are published; buyback wording | Written quote, published prices, customer agreement |
| B. Account costs | 10 | Custodian, storage and exit fees over 10 years | Custodian fee schedules |
| C. Contract fairness | 15 | Cancellation window, arbitration terms, claim deadline, liability cap | Signed customer agreement |
| D. Regulatory and legal record | 20 | Regulator orders, court judgments, settlements | CFTC, SEC and state orders; court dockets |
| E. Complaint record | 10 | What complaints say and how often they repeat | Dated complaint records |
| F. Product mix and sales pressure | 10 | Pushing high-premium coins lowers the score; marketing accuracy | Mystery shop, company pages |
| G. Custody and delivery | 5 | Who holds the metal and how fast it arrives | Custodian and depository documents |
The CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) and the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) are the federal regulators whose orders count most. A gate is a pass-or-fail rule applied before any points, and the 6 gates are shown below.
| Gate | Who fails it | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| G1 | Closed or bankrupt | Not scored while closed or bankrupt |
| G2 | Sanctioned for fraud, taking customer money for other uses or not delivering metal | Not scored, permanently |
| G3 | Settled a case over its prices or disclosures | Not scored for a set period (Lear Capital, see Legal Record) |
| G4 | Under watch | Set out in the methodology |
| G5 | Would not disclose the quote or agreement | Listed as "Not rated: would not disclose" |
| G6 | Out of scope for this page | Not scored |
A band is the word label for a score range: 85-100 Excellent, 70-84 Good, 55-69 Fair and under 55 Poor. Court and regulator orders, signed contracts and fee schedules count most, and other ranking lists never count. Every rule, weight and data source is published in how SafeOunce rates gold IRA companies.
The table below compares how three methods split their points.
| Share of total score | SafeOunce | Forbes Advisor | Investopedia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price actually paid | 30% | 10% (gold spreads) | No separate spread measure |
| Account fees | 10% | Part of 20% | 30% (pricing and fees) |
| Contract terms | 15% | 0% | 0% |
| Regulator and court record | 20% + gates | 0% (BBB grade inside a 15% profile score) | 0% |
| Complaint content | 10% | 20% (consumer sentiment) | 15% (customer service) |
| Product mix | 10% (pushing high-premium coins lowers the score) | 25% (coin availability, more is better) | 5% (selection) |
| Education and amenities | 0% | 0% | 30% |
Forbes Advisor gives 25% of its score to coin availability, so a bigger catalog scores higher. SafeOunce does the reverse for IRA buyers. A seller that steers you into numismatic coins (collector coins priced well above their metal) loses points.
Marketing accuracy also counts under product mix. The table below shows 4 company pages that conflict with IRS rules, as seen on September 29, 2026.
| Company page | What it says | What the rule says |
|---|---|---|
| Noble Gold Investments, gold IRA page | "store your gold at home" | Home storage of IRA gold is a taxable withdrawal (McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10, 2021) |
| Patriot Gold Group, About page | help "keeping their gold metals at home" | Same court ruling |
| Birch Gold Group, IRA page | RMDs "at 72" | The IRS says 73, or 75 if born in 1960 or later |
| American Bullion, rollover FAQ | Leaves out the 20% withholding | A plan check made out to you loses 20% to federal withholding (IRC 3405(c)) |
An RMD is a required minimum distribution: the amount the IRS makes you withdraw from a traditional IRA each year from a set age. Two sellers still suggest keeping IRA gold at home; see home storage gold IRA.
What the ranking does not score: BBB grades, star ratings and years in business#
SafeOunce shows BBB grades, star ratings and years in business but gives them 0 points, because none of them measures the price you pay or what your contract says. The 4 signals below appear on our company pages, dated, but never move a score.
- BBB grade. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) grade rests mostly on complaint handling, and "BBB charges a fee for BBB Accreditation." In plain English: accreditation is a paid membership.
- Trustpilot TrustScore. Trustpilot's star formula mixes "seven reviews at 3.5 stars" into every company's real reviews. As of September 29, 2026, 10 large sellers all scored 4.4 to 5.0 stars, bunched tightly (standard deviation 0.16 stars). Companies with more BBB complaints per 100 reviews only sometimes had fewer stars (rank correlation -0.46, 10 sellers).
- BCA and TrustLink. These two review sites run on member money. The Business Consumer Alliance (BCA) is "supported primarily by dues paid by Business Consumer Alliance member businesses" and refuses complaints over a year old or in court. TrustLink members pay for "preferential search listings."
- Years in business and celebrity spokespeople. Both are shown, not scored. A company's age and famous faces say nothing about the markup on your order.
Trustpilot also removed 7.4% of 2024 review submissions as fake, mostly positive ones. The math behind each signal is in are BBB, BCA and Trustpilot ratings reliable.
Real Cost: Why a Gold IRA Company's Markup Matters More Than Its Account Fee#
A gold IRA company's markup usually costs far more than its account fees: on $100,000, each 1% of markup is $1,000, about 3.5 years of a $285 yearly fee. You pay the markup once, on the day you buy, and the account fees every year.
Account fees go to the custodian and the vault, and custodians publish them. The markup, or spread, is the share of your price that is not metal, and the dealer keeps it. How dealers set the spread is explained in gold IRA markups and spreads.
The worked example below compares two routes on $100,000 over 10 years, gold price flat. Segregated storage keeps your own coins apart from other customers' coins.
| Route | Instant loss if sold back | Account fees, 10 years | About 10-year total ($100,000, gold price flat) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-cost bullion route (Equity Trust metals-only, segregated storage) | 5.4% ($5,400) | $3,180 (exit fee included) | $8,580 |
| Seller at a 19.99% bullion cap (American Hartford Gold's agreement dated September 2026) | 23.7% ($23,700), buyback gap included | $1,800 (Money.com's figures for AHG, exit fee not included) | $25,500 |
Money.com named American Hartford Gold "Best for Low Fees" on account fees alone (list of September 25, 2026). It reports $50 setup, $75 a year for accounts up to $100,000 and $100 a year for storage: $1,800 over 10 years. That is $1,380 less than the low-cost route, yet just 1.4% more spread ($1,400) wipes out the saving.
So why do the lists judge "low fees" on account fees alone? Account fees are published, and markups are not. The Jerusalem Post named Goldco "Best for Lowest Fees" (February 11, 2025), though Goldco publishes no spread.
On $250,000, 1% of spread equals 8.8 years of Equity Trust's $285 fee; on $100,000, 4.7 years of GoldStar's $215 fee (2026 schedules).
Three benchmarks show what a low spread looks like. A 1 oz Gold Eagle cost 5.39% round trip at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026 (a one-day snapshot). Gold.com, owner of JM Bullion, kept 5.138% of direct sales as gross profit in the year ended June 30, 2026 (annual report to the SEC). Lear Capital's bankruptcy plan set refunds at the spread paid minus a hypothetical 12% (plan confirmed June 12, 2023).
The CFTC puts bullion at 5% to 10% over spot and numismatic coins at 40% to 200% (advisory 8215-20, August 4, 2020). Its 10 Things advisory (March 20, 2024) warns that some fraudulent dealers charged spreads of "more than 300 percent"; that is fraud, not a typical cost. Every layer, from setup to exit, is compared in gold IRA fees.
What does a $100,000 gold IRA cost over 10 years at different markups?#
A $100,000 gold IRA held for 10 years costs about $8,580 with plain bullion, but $30,171 to $45,983 at spreads of 23.4% to 39.99%. The table below shows 3 account sizes and 3 scenarios at 1, 5 and 10 years.
| Account | Scenario | 1 year | 5 years | 10 years (share of account) | Rise gold needs to break even (10 years) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | A: plain bullion, 5.4% round trip | $3,315 | $4,455 | $5,880 (11.8%) | 12.4% |
| $50,000 | B: 23.4% spread + buyback gap (27.0%) | $14,110 | $15,250 | $16,675 (33.4%) | 45.7% |
| $50,000 | C: 39.99% cap + buyback gap (42.8%) | $22,016 | $23,156 | $24,581 (49.2%) | 86.0% |
| $100,000 | A | $6,015 | $7,155 | $8,580 (8.6%) | 9.1% |
| $100,000 | B | $27,606 | $28,746 | $30,171 (30.2%) | 41.3% |
| $100,000 | C | $43,418 | $44,558 | $45,983 (46.0%) | 80.4% |
| $250,000 | A | $14,115 | $15,255 | $16,680 (6.7%) | 7.1% |
| $250,000 | B | $68,092 | $69,232 | $70,657 (28.3%) | 38.7% |
| $250,000 | C | $107,622 | $108,762 | $110,187 (44.1%) | 77.1% |
The table rests on the 4 assumptions below.
- Custodian fees: Equity Trust precious-metals-only segregated storage, $50 setup, $285 a year and $280 to exit (schedule FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726).
- Gold price: flat for 10 years, with fees paid from outside the account.
- Scenario B: 23.4% is Lear Capital's own 2022 average, stated in its court-filed Chapter 11 plan (Doc 694, June 5, 2023), not an industry average.
- Scenario C: 39.99% is the "up to" cap for coins labeled "exclusive" in American Hartford Gold's agreement dated September 2026. It is a cap, not what every buyer pays.
You can change these numbers in the gold IRA fee calculator.
The last column is the break-even rise: how much gold must gain before a sale covers every cost.
The spread and buyback gap alone need the rises below, before any yearly fees.
| Spread | Day-one sale value of $100,000 | Rise gold needs |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | $90,547 | 10.4% |
| 20% | $76,250 | 31.1% |
| 23.4% (Lear Capital's 2022 average) | $73,009 | 37.0% |
| 39.99% (American Hartford Gold's cap) | $57,197 | 74.8% |
Scenario A needs less, because its 5.4% is a measured round trip, not a 5% spread plus a buyback gap. The custodian and vault cost about $3,200 over ten years; the company and the coins you buy decide the rest.
Test your own quote in the gold IRA break-even calculator.
How much is "free silver" or "no fees for life" really worth?#
A free-silver bonus or fee waiver pays off only if the coins you must buy cost no more than plain bullion, and they usually cost more. Bonus metal is extra silver added to your order. A fee waiver means the company pays your custodian and storage fees for a time.
Fee waivers are smaller than they sound. Augusta's FAQ (updated September 23, 2026) promises "up to 10 years of custodian and depository fees paid by Augusta" but states no conditions. On Augusta's own figures, that is worth up to about $2,400. What each waiver is worth is in no-fee gold IRA offers.
Even ten years of Equity Trust segregated fees, without the exit fee, total only $2,900, or 2.9% of $100,000. Coins costing about 3% more than plain bullion wipe out a full 10-year waiver. The table below prices 3 offers seen in 2026 on a $100,000 account.
| Offer (company, date) | Condition | What it is worth on $100,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Free silver up to 10% (Goldco homepage, September 29, 2026) | Goldco premium coins only; markup not published | Pays off only if those coins carry a spread of 13% or less (hypothetical) |
| Fees paid for up to 10 years (Augusta FAQ, September 23, 2026) | Conditions not stated | Up to about $2,400 ($285 + 9 x $235) |
| Fees up to $300 a year (U.S. Money Reserve, from April 1, 2026) | $200,000 rollover, at least 60% proof coins (specially struck collector coins) | Up to $300 a year ($3,000 over 10 years), less than the proof-coin premium in the example below |
The proof-coin gap is easy to price. Orion's 1 oz proof Gold Eagle was 13.38% over spot and its regular Eagle 5.90% (September 29, 2026). On $120,000 of proof coins, 60% of a $200,000 rollover, that gap costs about $7,900.
Goldco offers 5% free silver on $50,000 to $99,999 and 10% on $100,000 or more, in "Goldco premium coins" only (homepage, September 29, 2026). Goldco does not publish those coins' spread, so the steps below use a hypothetical 30% spread.
| Step | Premium coins + 10% bonus (hypothetical) | Plain bullion at a 5% spread |
|---|---|---|
| You pay | $100,000 | $100,000 |
| Metal you own on day one | $70,000 of coins + $8,000 of bonus silver (bonus assumed at a 20% spread) | $95,000 |
| Sale value at a buyback bid of about 95.31% | About $74,344 | About $90,547 |
| Difference | $16,203 less |
The bonus pays off only if the premium coins carry a spread of 13% or less. The formula below turns any bonus into the premium you really pay.
Effective premium = (1 + premium) / (1 + bonus) - 1
A 30% premium over metal value with a 10% bonus gives 1.30 / 1.10 - 1 = 18.2%, still far above plain bullion.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rule on "free" offers bans recovering the cost "by marking up the price of the article which must be purchased" (16 CFR 251.1).
How the bonus is paid for is shown in free silver gold IRA promotions.
How much money do you need before a gold IRA company makes sense?#
You need $5,000 to $50,000 to open an account at a gold IRA company (published minimums, September 2026), and about $25,000 before its fees stay small. The IRS sets no minimum.
The table below shows each published minimum and the share the yearly fee takes at that level (fee pages as of September 29, 2026; Goldco's cost page updated February 2025).
| Company | Published minimum | Yearly fees | Share of the minimum each year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birch Gold Group | $5,000 | About $235 | 4.7% |
| GoldenCrest Metals | $10,000 | $250 after its free period (company figure) | 2.5% |
| Noble Gold Investments | $20,000 | $275 or $285 (two Noble pages) | About 1.4% |
| Goldco | $25,000 | $275 ($125 administration + $150 segregated storage) | 1.10% |
| Augusta Precious Metals | $50,000 (Augusta FAQ) | $235 after the first year (Augusta FAQ) | 0.47% |
Over 10 years, the fixed fees hurt small accounts most. At a flat-fee custodian (one that charges the same fee whatever your balance) with a 5.4% round trip, a $5,000 IRA loses about $3,450 (69.0%). A $10,000 IRA loses $3,720 (37.2%), and a $25,000 IRA $4,530 (18.1%). Every published minimum is listed in how much money you need to start a gold IRA.
The 2026 IRA contribution limit is $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older (IRS Notice 2025-67), so most accounts start with a rollover.
Other ranking pages print wrong minimums. TipRanks (June 30, 2026) lists Noble at "$2,000" and Birch at "$10,000," and The Jerusalem Post (February 11, 2025) lists Birch at $25,000. TipRanks, The Jerusalem Post and Money.com all put American Hartford Gold at $10,000, though it publishes no minimum.
Contract Terms: What Gold IRA Company Agreements Actually Say#
Most gold IRA company agreements give you 24 hours to 7 days to cancel, send disputes to private arbitration and give you about a year to bring a claim. Arbitration means a private judge decides the dispute instead of a court.
JAMS and the AAA (American Arbitration Association) are private arbitration companies. An opt-out is a letter that keeps your right to sue; a claim deadline is the last day to file. The table below sets out 11 sellers' terms, as read on September 29, 2026.
| Company (document, date) | Cancellation | Dispute forum and opt-out | Claim deadline | Buyback wording |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| American Hartford Gold (Shipping and Transaction Agreement, September 2026) | 7 days, non-bullion only; runs "regardless of whether the account is fully funded" | JAMS, nearest office; no joinder | 1 year | "applicable laws currently prohibit AHG from guaranteeing to repurchase" |
| Lear Capital (terms and conditions, December 2025; not ranked) | 24 hours after invoice; longer where state law requires | JAMS Los Angeles; 30-day opt-out, but Lear may then rescind the purchase | 1 year + 1 day | "The law prohibits LC from guaranteeing" |
| Preserve Gold (agreement, June 2025) | 24 hours after invoice | JAMS nearest office; each side pays its own lawyers | 1 year + 1 day | Pays the highest wholesaler list bid; no guarantee |
| American Bullion (agreement, October 2024) | 15-day returns on semi-numismatic and numismatic coins only (possible 3% restocking fee); none for bullion; greater of $250 or 0.50% if you transfer and buy nothing | JAMS Los Angeles; JAMS consumer standards stated not to apply; 15-day class-waiver opt-out | Not recorded | The law prohibits a guarantee |
| Birch Gold Group (website terms) | Returns only for counterfeit coins within 90 days | JAMS Des Moines; fees split 50/50 "subject to" JAMS minimum standards; confidential | Not recorded | Not published |
| Advantage Gold (terms) | After confirmation you bear any market loss plus a fee (percentage left blank); Advantage keeps any market gain | AAA consumer rules; 30-day opt-out | Not recorded | Not published |
| Orion Metal Exchange (terms of use) | Not published | AAA with consumer procedures, Los Angeles County; reimburses filing fees above $200; small claims allowed | Not recorded | "Commission-free buyback" (company statement) |
| U.S. Money Reserve (user agreement 2026, which excludes the IRA program) | 3 business days | Arbitration with a 30-day opt-out by mail; hearing near you | Not recorded | IRA buyback program covers proof and exclusive coins only, up to the yearly RMD amount |
| Augusta Precious Metals (FAQ, September 23, 2026; agreement not public) | Up to 7 calendar days after confirmation, all transactions | Not public | Not public | "Augusta cannot legally guarantee it will purchase" |
| Goldco (customer agreement not public) | Not published | Not public | Not public | Homepage: "Buy Back program guaranteed at the highest price," no terms |
| Priority Gold (website policies) | 3 business days to 8 days by state; the IRA clock starts at Priority's transfer notice | Not public | Not public | Wholesale bid, open market, or consignment for non-bullion after 60 months at an 18% fee |
Key to the table: "no joinder" means you cannot combine your claim with other customers' claims, and a class waiver gives up group lawsuits. "Rescind" means cancel the sale; consignment means the company sells your coins for you for a fee. A liability cap is the most a company can owe you; American Hartford Gold caps it at the amount you paid.
Clause by clause, see gold IRA company contracts compared.
The version you sign matters. American Hartford Gold's 2023 agreement (V323) capped exclusive and IRA coins at up to 34.99%. Its September 2026 agreement allows up to 39.99% on exclusive coins and 59.99% on limited numismatic coins, and limits the 7-day window to non-bullion.
Consumer filing fees are capped at $225 under AAA consumer rules and $250 under JAMS minimum standards (as of September 2026). Federal courts usually enforce these clauses: Mathys v. The Hartford Gold Group (N.D. Ill. 2020), Patterson v. Lear (D. Utah 2020), Ireland v. Lear (D. Minn. 2012).
In Mathys, an 83-year-old who invested $604,331.83 and alleged the coins were worth less than half was still sent to arbitration (December 7, 2020). The exception is Dennison v. Rosland Capital (Cal. Ct. App. 2020): the clause was found too unfair to enforce against an 82-year-old buyer.
How long do you have to cancel a gold IRA order?#
Gold IRA companies that publish a window give you 24 hours to 7 days to cancel, and some windows close before your rollover money even arrives. The clock usually starts at the invoice or confirmation, as the example below shows.
- You sign a Lear Capital order on Monday at 3 p.m. and are invoiced at once.
- The 24-hour window closes on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
- A 401(k) transfer often takes longer than a day, so the window can close before the money reaches your IRA.
American Hartford Gold's 7 days run "regardless of whether the account is fully funded" and exclude bullion. Priority Gold's IRA clock starts at its transfer notice and runs 3 business days to 8 days, by state.
In Goldco Direct v. Wilson (N.D. Ala. 4:18-cv-850, March 27, 2019), a buyer placed 3 orders totaling over $400,000. Only the last, $159,901.72, cancelled within 24 hours, was refunded.
Is there any right the dealer cannot shorten? Yes: the IRA revocation right, which you use against the custodian, not the dealer.
The steps to cancel a gold IRA in writing are on a separate page.
Does any gold IRA company guarantee to buy back your metal?#
No gold IRA company promises to buy back all your metal at a set price: the 5 dealer agreements we read that address it say the law prohibits a guarantee. A buyback program is a promise to make an offer, not a promise of a price.
American Hartford Gold's agreement (September 2026) says "applicable laws currently prohibit AHG from guaranteeing to repurchase." The Lear Capital, Preserve Gold and American Bullion agreements say the same. So does the agreement of Goldline, a Gold.com seller outside our 15. Augusta's FAQ (September 23, 2026) says "Augusta cannot legally guarantee it will purchase or trade metals you own."
U.S. Money Reserve's IRA Buyback Advantage is a narrow exception (terms as read September 29, 2026). It promises the greater of market value or your original price. That covers only its proof and exclusive coins, only up to your yearly RMD amount, and the terms can change.
The ads go further. Goldco's homepage promises a "Buy Back program guaranteed at the highest price," and Noble's who-we-are page mentions "Our guaranteed buyback program." Neither page publishes terms (September 29, 2026). Yet Forbes Advisor and CNBC Select label Goldco "Best for Buyback Guarantee(s)."
Judge a buyback by its bid, not its label. The usual contract bid is about 95.31% of what the coins cost the dealer. A same-day buyback quote is a better test; one large online dealer's round trip on 1 oz bullion was 5.2% to 7.4% (September 29, 2026). What each contract promises is set out in gold IRA buyback programs compared.
Legal Record: Which Gold IRA Companies Are Not Ranked, and Why#
SafeOunce does not rank 9 gold IRA companies: 8 failed, closed or were sanctioned, and Lear Capital is set aside after $14.25 million in pricing settlements and refunds. Lear admitted no wrongdoing.
The legal words in the table below mean the following.
- Chapter 11: a bankruptcy that reorganizes or winds down a company. Chapter 7 is a liquidation run by a trustee, and "involuntary" means creditors, such as customers, filed it.
- Receivership: a court-appointed manager runs the company.
- Consent order or judgment: a settlement entered as a court or regulator order. A default judgment follows when a defendant does not answer.
- Failed: a bankruptcy, receivership or collapse. Sanctioned: ordered by a regulator or court over fraud or non-delivery.
- Alleged: claimed in a case that is not yet decided.
The table below lists the 9 companies we do not rank, with their status as of September 29, 2026.
| Company | Status | What happened (case, date) | Customer money involved | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lear Capital review | Operating, not ranked | Los Angeles City Attorney $2.75 million (December 30, 2021); New York Attorney General $6 million consent decree (announced January 3, 2022); Chapter 11 filed March 2, 2022, plan confirmed June 12, 2023 with a $5.5 million customer fund; no admission | $14.25 million in public settlements and the customer fund | G3 (pricing settlement) |
| Rosland Capital bankruptcy | Failed | Liquidating Chapter 11 filed July 2, 2026 (Bankr. C.D. Cal. 2:26-bk-16650-BB) | About $60.8 million owed to about 617 customers; $212,661.60 cash on August 6, 2026 (0.35%) | G1 |

| Safeguard Metals | Failed | CFTC liability consent order October 25, 2023; CFTC final judgment September 30, 2025 | $66,948,960 from more than 450 customers | G2 |

| Gold Alliance | Closed | Closed "effective June 24, 2024" per its website | Not public | G1 |
| Midas Gold Group | Failed | Chapter 11 filed June 7, 2024, converted to Chapter 7 September 25, 2024 | Metals on hand fell 90.6% in 62 days | G1 |

Gold IRA companies that failed since 2022, and what customers lost#
Customers of just three gold IRA companies had more than $131 million at stake: Rosland Capital, Red Rock Secured and Regal Assets, all failed or sanctioned since 2022. Rosland owes about $60.8 million, and Regal took over $21 million (CFTC 9001-24). Oxford's total is not public.
Red Rock took over $50 million by the SEC's count (SEC LR-25996). The CFTC's "over $69 million" measures something else: what customers paid for coins worth about $30 million.
Cash ran out first. Rosland held $212,661.60 on August 6, 2026, or 0.35% of what it owed (first-day bankruptcy filing); its gross margin had fallen from 18.4% in 2021 to 8.7% in 2025. Regal held $347,724 on November 1, 2021, against at least $7 million of metal owed (5.0%).
CBS News still recommended Rosland in a list dated August 7, 2026, 36 days after the July 2, 2026 filing. What happens to your account when a seller collapses is on failed gold IRA companies.
The 5 delivery checks below show whether your metal really reached your IRA.
- Confirm that the custodian pays the dealer only on your signed direction.
- Read your statement from the custodian, not from the dealer.
- Check that the vault account is in your IRA's name, not in one big account in the dealer's name, which is what happened at Regal.
- Expect the metal on your statement within 28 days, the deadline the CFTC uses to judge whether metal was really delivered. Washington's securities regulator found Rosland delivered IRA metal 33 to 168 days after payment (order of August 4, 2022).
- Match the item list on the statement to your invoice, coin by coin.
The next steps if a check fails are in is your gold really in your IRA.
Why a BBB A+ rating does not prove a gold IRA company is safe#
A BBB A+ mostly shows that a company answers its complaints: 75 of the BBB's 100 points depend on complaint handling, and star reviews count for nothing. An A+ means 97 to 100 points (BBB rating overview), so a company can earn it with a high complaint rate.
The table below shows 10 sellers with a BBB A+ as of September 29, 2026, and their complaint rates.
| Company | BBB grade | Complaints closed in 3 years | BBB reviews | Complaints per 100 reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lear Capital | A+ (accredited since 1997) | 33 | 149 | 22.1 |
| American Hartford Gold | A+ | 111 | 798 | 13.9 |
| Priority Gold | A+ (not accredited) | 38 | 641 | 5.9 |
| Goldco | A+ | 72 | 1,710 | 4.2 |
| Birch Gold Group | A+ | 9 | 227 | 4.0 |
| Preserve Gold | A+ | 2 | 123 | 1.6 |
| Noble Gold Investments | A+ | 3 | 242 | 1.2 |
| Augusta Precious Metals | A+ | 1 | 135 | 0.7 |
| Patriot Gold Group | A+ | 0 | 80 | 0 |
| Advantage Gold | A+ | 0 | 9 | 0 |
Every company in the table has an A+, yet their complaint rates differ by more than 20 to 1. Lear Capital has the highest rate, 22.1, despite BBB accreditation since 1997.
Complaint density is complaints closed in 3 years for every 100 reviews, and it changes daily.
Grades change after the damage is done. Oxford Gold Group was BBB-accredited until the BBB revoked it in 2024, and it is now rated F with 177 complaints. Rosland is now Not Rated with 158 complaints (September 29, 2026).
To check a gold IRA company, search court and regulator records under its legal name. The records worth searching are listed in how to check a gold IRA company.
Best Gold IRA Company for Your Situation: 9 Specialist Rankings#
The best gold IRA company depends on your situation: a $10,000 saver, a $250,000 rollover and a Roth contributor pay very different costs at the same company. Each specialist ranking below measures what matters most in one situation.
Commingled storage keeps your coins with other customers' coins of the same type. A per-purchase fee is what a custodian charges each time you buy. The table below matches 9 situations to their specialist ranking and one dated number.
| Situation | Specialist ranking | What it ranks on | A number to know now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest total cost | gold IRA companies with the lowest total cost | 10-year cost, markup included | About $8,580 vs about $25,500 on $100,000 over 10 years (September 29, 2026) |
| Investing $5,000 to $25,000 | best gold IRA companies for small investors | 10-year cost at $10,000 and $25,000 | A $10,000 bullion IRA loses $3,720 (37.2%) in 10 years |
| Rolling over a 401(k), TSP (the federal employees' Thrift Savings Plan) or IRA | best gold IRA rollover companies | Whether it uses direct transfers, and how its cancellation clock runs | A 24-hour window can close before the money arrives |
| First-time buyer | best gold IRA companies for beginners | Long cancellation covering bullion, public contract, written quote | 1 of 15 publishes at least 7 days, in every state, covering bullion |
| Silver IRA | best silver IRA companies | Ounces you get for your money | $50,000 buys about 702 oz as 2026 Silver Eagles (16.1% over spot) vs about 791 oz as 2026 Britannias (3.1% over spot), at $61.34 spot on September 29, 2026 |
| Roth IRA with yearly additions | best Roth gold IRA companies | Per-purchase fees | STRATA (a custodian) charges $75 per purchase, 0.87% of an $8,600 contribution; GoldStar $0 (2026 schedules) |
| A clean exit | Gold IRA buyback programs compared (see the buyback section above) | Contract wording and measured round trip | 5 dealer agreements say the law prohibits a guarantee |
| Choosing the custodian | best gold IRA custodians | 10-year all-in cost | $2,410 (GoldStar, commingled) to $6,910 (Madison Trust) at $100,000 (2026 schedules) |
| Choosing the vault | best gold IRA depositories | Insurance, audits, ownership | Delaware Depository: $1 billion insurance against most kinds of loss plus $100 million backup cover; it pays the metal's value, not what you paid over spot (FAQ, September 29, 2026) |
A small saver loses most to fixed fees, a large rollover to the markup and a yearly Roth buyer to per-purchase fees.
How to Check Any "Best Gold IRA Companies" List in 60 Seconds#
You can test any "best gold IRA companies" list with 6 yes-or-no questions, and the 5 top pages we could read on September 29, 2026 each failed at least two. The questions check who pays the site, how it ranks and whether it mentions markups. The 5 pages were TipRanks, two IRAEmpire press releases (on Yahoo Finance and ACCESS Newswire), The Jerusalem Post and Money.com.
The 6 questions below answer the Reddit thread that ranked #2 that day: "'Best Gold IRA company' feels like a trap… what should I actually compare?" A redirect is a tracking address a link passes through.
- Is there an ad or "Our Partners" block above the list? (Warning answer: yes.)
- Do company links run through redirects, such as /go/, /pr/ or go2.? (Warning answer: yes.)
- Does the page say who pays it, right next to the list? (Warning answer: no.)
- Does it publish its weights and the date its data was collected? (Warning answer: no.)
- Does it name companies it rejected, and why? (Warning answer: no.)
- Does it mention markups and contract terms? (Warning answer: no.)
Two or more warning answers on questions 3 to 6 mean you are reading advertising.
The FTC's Endorsement Guides say paid rankings "are deceptive," and "a disclosure ... would be inadequate because the payments actually determine" them (16 CFR 255.4(b), Example 3). In plain English: a "we may earn a fee" note does not fix a list that sells its order. Who ranks whom, and who pays, is set out in gold IRA best of lists compared.
Money.com's list of September 25, 2026 says "Research and financial considerations may influence how brands are displayed." In Orion Precious Metals v. Money Group (C.D. Cal. 2:26-cv-07092, filed June 29, 2026), Orion alleges money.com is "paid by these companies to rank their businesses as a top choice." The case is pending, with no ruling known.
The same page sells ad slots. Its paid "Our Partner" block (read September 29, 2026) names 6 companies, including Lear Capital, which we do not rank. Only 2 of the 6, American Hartford Gold and Augusta, are among its 8 editorial picks, and the page carries 99 sponsored links.
An affiliate link pays the site when you call or buy. Augusta's affiliate terms (September 29, 2026) pay 8% of "Premium Trade Value," 0% on bullion and $200 per qualified lead. If a $100,000 order counts in full as premium coins, the site earns $8,200; on bullion, $200.
We checked 32 regular (unpaid) results on 4 "best gold IRA" searches on September 29, 2026. Nine were press releases (company-paid announcements), and 2 were one TipRanks page labeled "Sponsored Content": about 1 in 3. Another 6 were forums, and 1 was an affiliate page on a Stanford library blog domain.

9 lists, 20 companies, 5 different #1 picks: why the best gold IRA lists disagree#
Best gold IRA lists disagree because they weight different things, most earn from partners and some copy each other: 9 lists name 20 companies and 5 different #1 picks. None of them scores a company's regulator or court record.
Augusta appears on 8 of the 9 lists, American Hartford Gold and Goldco on 7 each, and JM Bullion, Noble, Orion and Birch on 4 each. Clute Journals and TipRanks name exactly the same companies (overlap 1.00, or 100%). Forbes and Yahoo have only 13% in common, and Investopedia and Yahoo 9%.
The table below compares the 9 lists on the date each was seen.
| List (date seen) | #1 or first listed | Weights published? | Scores regulator or court record? | Disclosure (short quote) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Money.com (September 25, 2026) | Allegiance Gold | No | No (excludes American Coin Co., formerly Red Rock Secured) | "may influence how brands are displayed" |
| Forbes Advisor (audited June 26, 2026) | Silver Gold Bull | Yes | No | Paid placement affects "how and where" offers appear |
| Investopedia (page as saved April 2025) | JM Bullion | Yes | No | "no influence from advertising partnerships" |
| CNBC Select (modified September 1, 2026; first published November 9, 2023) | American Hartford Gold | No | No | "may be influenced by compensation" |
| Yahoo Finance (May 1, 2026) | American Hartford Gold | No | No | None captured |
| CBS News (August 7, 2026) | Augusta | No | No | "We may receive commissions" |
| RetirementLiving (September 17, 2026) | American Hartford Gold (listed first) | No | No | "We may earn money from our partners" |
| Clute Journals (August 7, 2026) | Augusta | No | No | "We may earn a commission" |
| TipRanks (June 30, 2026) | Augusta | No | No | "Sponsored Content" |
Awards go stale, and labels contradict the data. Money.com moved its "Best Overall" from Augusta to Allegiance Gold on May 29, 2026. Yet Augusta's homepage still claims Money's "Best Overall 2022-2026" (September 29, 2026). Goldco still advertises Money.com's "Best Customer Service 2026" (page dated February 4, 2026), though Money.com dropped Goldco on May 29, 2026.
Forbes Advisor calls Birch "Best for Transparency" despite Birch's lowest pricing score from customers (1.4 out of 5). It names Goldco "Best for Buyback Guarantees" while ranking it last of 10 on transparency.
Rule errors spread the same way, as the table below shows.
| List (date) | What it says | What the rule or record says |
|---|---|---|
| CBS News (August 7, 2026) | RMDs "at 72" | 73, or 75 if born in 1960 or later (IRS RMD FAQs) |
| CBS News | "mints certified by the IRS" | "There is no list of approved investments" (IRS Retirement Plan Investments FAQs) |
| CBS News | A gold IRA's "capital gains rate can reach 28%" | IRA withdrawals are taxed like regular income, such as wages |
| The Jerusalem Post (February 11, 2025) | Birch "Founded 2003" | Birch's own site says "In Business Since 2011" |
No company can pay for a place on this page, a label or a link. Our own rules on money are in who pays SafeOunce.
5 Numbers to Get in Writing Before You Fund a Gold IRA#
Before you fund a gold IRA, get five numbers in writing: the price per coin over spot, tomorrow's buyback bid, every yearly fee, the exit fees and the cancellation window. A fee schedule is the custodian's published price list.
The CFTC says to get "all fees, costs, commissions, and agreed retail price in writing BEFORE signing" (10 Things, 2024). To choose a gold IRA company, compare these numbers across your shortlist; all 12 questions are in how to choose a gold IRA company.
The 5 numbers you should get in writing are listed below.
- Get the price per coin and its percent over spot for every item on the order.
- Get the buyback bid: "how much you would receive if you had to sell back the metal tomorrow," in the CFTC's words.
- Get every yearly custodian and storage fee, after any free period, with the fee schedule's name.
- Get the exit fees for selling, transferring out and closing the account.
- Get the cancellation window in days, what starts the clock and whether it covers bullion.
Walk away if you hear any of the 4 stop signs below.
- Talk of "IRS-approved" coins.
- Pressure to "move everything into gold."
- Warnings that your accounts will be "frozen or seized."
- A seller with no securities license telling you to sell your stocks (SEC v. Safeguard Metals).
If a seller uses them, here is how to report a gold IRA company.
Your custodian will not check the dealer's price. The SEC and NASAA (the association of state securities regulators) warn that "Self-directed IRA custodians generally do not evaluate the quality or legitimacy of any investment" (SEC investor alert). Exit fees add up: Equity Trust charges $250 to close and $125 per transfer out (Rev. 081726).
Check your first custodian statement against your invoice. At a 33% spread, it shows only 67% of what you paid; at 20%, 80%.

Gold IRA Companies vs Other Ways to Hold Gold for Retirement#
A gold IRA company is one of 4 ways to hold gold for retirement, and the other 3 usually cost less but ask more of you. They are a bullion dealer working with your own custodian, gold bought inside a brokerage IRA and a gold ETF in the IRA you already have. Each route is compared head to head in gold IRA comparisons.
Is a bullion dealer or your own brokerage IRA cheaper than a gold IRA company?#
Often, yes: a large bullion dealer or a brokerage selling gold inside its own IRA can cost less, since plain bullion runs about 5% to 7% round trip. A 1 oz Gold Eagle cost 5.39% round trip at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026, and Orion's live price that morning was 5.90% over spot. A bullion dealer can sell to your IRA at a custodian you pick; the full cost math is in bullion dealer vs gold IRA company.
The table below compares 3 routes as of September 29, 2026.
| Route | What you pay | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Large bullion dealer + your own custodian | About 5.39% round trip on a 1 oz Gold Eagle (SD Bullion), plus custodian fees | You choose the custodian and handle the paperwork |
| Fidelity IRA metals (schedule FA-FEES-0926) | Buy commission 2.90% (under $10,000) down to 0.99% ($100,000 and up); sell 2.00% down to 0.75%; $44 minimum per trade; storage 0.125% a quarter (at least $3.75); $1,000 minimum IRA purchase | Commission on every trade; storage grows with the balance |
| Gold ETF in an existing IRA | Three gold ETFs, by ticker: GLDM 0.10%, IAU 0.25%, GLD 0.40% a year (2025-2026 10-K filings) | You own fund shares, not coins |
Large online dealers top the Forbes and Investopedia lists on catalog size. That matters little, because the tax code allows only named coins and bullion of set purity (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)). Fees for buying bullion at Fidelity are on Fidelity gold IRA.
Is it better to buy physical gold or a gold IRA?#
Neither is better for everyone: use a gold IRA for money already in a 401(k) or IRA, and buy coins with taxed money if you want them in hand. A gold IRA keeps that money tax-deferred (no tax until you take it out).
The full tax math is in gold IRA vs physical gold.
Best gold IRA companies: frequently asked questions#
Who has the best gold IRA?#
We cannot name a best gold IRA company yet, because none has earned a SafeOunce Score (September 29, 2026). The ranking table shows who puts price and contract in writing; the best fit depends on your balance and goal. Augusta Precious Metals appears on 8 of 9 major lists and Goldco on 7. The two are compared in Augusta Precious Metals vs Goldco.
What is the most reputable company to buy gold from?#
No rating can name one most reputable company; the reputation you can check lives in court and regulator records, not in star ratings. Start with the company's legal name, its contract and the CFTC, SEC and state regulator databases. The CFTC does not license metals dealers, and most gold IRA dealers are not registered with it, so "not registered" proves nothing. Which agency covers what is in who regulates gold IRA companies.
What is a "gold-backed IRA"?#
A "gold-backed IRA" is another name for a gold IRA: an IRA whose custodian holds qualifying gold in a depository for you. The gold can be a coin the law names, such as the American Gold Eagle, or bullion at least .995 fine, meaning 99.5% pure (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)). It must be "in the physical possession of a trustee," meaning the custodian or its vault holds it, not you. The IRS keeps no approved list. What qualifies is set out in IRA-approved precious metals, though the tax code's word is "eligible."
What gold company does Sean Hannity recommend?#
Sean Hannity appears as a spokesperson on Goldco's homepage (September 29, 2026). A spokesperson is part of a company's ads, not a rating. The homepage showed 6 famous faces that day. The CFTC warns that metals fraudsters target political and religious shows (release 8881-24, 2024). Who endorses whom is tracked in gold IRA celebrity endorsements.
Which gold company did Warren Buffett buy?#
Warren Buffett's company, Berkshire Hathaway, bought shares of Barrick Gold, a mining company, in 2020 and had sold them by the end of that year. A 13F is the holdings list large investors file with the SEC each quarter. Berkshire's showed 20,918,701 shares worth $563.55 million at June 30, 2020, and none at December 31, 2020. The filings show no gold IRA company or physical gold. His view is covered in why Dave Ramsey and Warren Buffett say no to gold.
What is the downside of a gold IRA?#
The biggest downside is cost: the dealer's markup, fixed yearly fees and the buyback gap mean gold must rise before you break even, and it pays no income. At a 5% spread, gold needs a 10.4% rise to break even; at 20%, it needs 31.1%. Each downside is weighed by situation in the real downsides of a gold IRA.
What if I invested $10,000 in gold 20 years ago?#
$10,000 of gold bought on September 28, 2006 was worth $68,732 at spot on September 28, 2026, but about $49,929 inside a low-cost gold IRA after its costs. The LBMA PM gold price (the benchmark set each afternoon in London) rose from $603.00 to $4,144.55. The IRA case assumes a $50 setup fee, a 5% premium and $250 a year in fees. Every year is in gold IRA returns since 1971.
What happens if my gold IRA company goes bankrupt?#
It depends on delivery: metal already in your IRA's vault account is not the dealer's, but paid orders and buybacks never completed become claims in the bankruptcy. At Rosland, that meant about $49 million of paid but undelivered orders plus about $11.8 million of unpaid buybacks. Customers file a proof of claim, a form stating what they are owed. Where the metal sits is explained in gold IRA depositories.
Are gold IRA rankings paid for?#
Often, yes: on September 29, 2026, about 1 in 3 results on 4 "best gold IRA" searches were press releases or sponsored pages. Seven of the 9 major lists we compared say they may earn from partners or are sponsored. Federal rules call a paid ranking deceptive even with a disclosure. Sellers also pay for leads, such as the phone numbers that free gold IRA kits collect.
