Key takeaways

  • Start with the question you have: cost, growth, a deadline, a required withdrawal or whether a coin qualifies, because each SafeOunce tool answers one of them.
  • SafeOunce's 9 gold IRA tools total your costs, project growth, date your deadlines, turn your RMD into coins and check coins and companies.
  • None of 7 gold IRA calculators ranking on Google in September 2026 counts markup, buyback, yearly fees and exit costs together, and 2 print the wrong 2026 IRA limit.
  • Every SafeOunce tool follows 8 rules: no sign-up, shown formulas, dated defaults, tables from the law itself, costs first, plain answers, nothing stored and no sales pitch.
  • A gold IRA calculator cannot tell you 5 things: future gold prices, your exact taxes, your dealer's actual quote, your custodian's product rules, or what is right for you.

SafeOunce's 9 free gold IRA tools turn IRS rules, dated fees and gold history into a dollar, date or ounce answer, with no sign-up. Five of them work as of September 29, 2026, and 4 open in October 2026. On a $100,000 gold IRA, the dealer's spread can cost 8.5 times as much as 10 years of account fees. Yet none of the 7 ranking calculators SafeOunce checked in September 2026 counts the markup, yearly fees and exit costs together.

The markup is the extra you pay above the metal's market value. Dealers usually state it as a spread: the share of your price that is not metal. The custodian is the trust company that holds the account and bills yearly fees. A gold IRA is one type of precious metals IRA, and these tools serve anyone who holds or is weighing a precious metals IRA.

Below: a question router, each tool with one dated result, what 7 ranking calculators leave out, the 8 rules every tool follows and 5 limits. No company can pay to change what a SafeOunce tool shows.

The table below lists the 9 tools and their status as of September 29, 2026.

Which Gold IRA Calculator Do You Need? Start With Your Question#

Start with the question you have: cost, growth, a deadline, a required withdrawal or whether a coin qualifies, because each SafeOunce tool answers one of them. The table below matches 10 common questions to the tool that answers each one.

If your question is... Use this tool What you get
"A company quoted me a price. Is it fair?" Break-even calculator How far gold must rise before you are even
"What will 10 years of fees cost?" Fee calculator One total, spread included
"What could it be worth?" Growth calculator Ending value after costs, at a fixed rate or in real past periods
"How big should my gold slice be?" Allocation backtester Day-one cost and past falls as a share of all your savings
"My old 401(k) sent me a check." Rollover deadline calculator Your last safe day, plus the withholding trap
"Am I about to use my one rollover this year?" Rollover deadline calculator The first clearly safe date for a second rollover
"How much can I add this year?" Contribution calculator Your 2026 limit and the years to reach a company minimum
"I turn 73 (or 75) this year." RMD calculator Dollars, ounces, whole coins
"Can this coin go in my IRA?" Eligibility checker Yes, no or "ask your custodian", with the law cited
"Which companies publish their fees?" Comparison tool Dated facts, with "Not published" where a company is silent

A rollover is moving retirement money yourself: the plan or IRA pays you, and you redeposit the money within 60 days. An RMD, or required minimum distribution, is the yearly amount the IRS makes you take out of a traditional IRA. It starts at 73 or 75, depending on your birth year.

Most readers use 2 tools in a row: the break-even calculator on a quote, then the fee calculator on the whole account.

What Do the 9 SafeOunce Gold IRA Tools Do?#

SafeOunce's 9 gold IRA tools total your costs, project growth, date your deadlines, turn your RMD into coins and check coins and companies. Five of them work as of September 29, 2026, and the other 4 open in October 2026.

1. Gold IRA Fee Calculator: what 10 years of costs add up to#

The gold IRA fee calculator adds every cost of a gold IRA over 1 to 20 years into one number. On $100,000 over 10 years, the dealer's spread can cost 8.5 times as much as all the account fees.

The gold IRA fee calculator takes the amount, the years and a spread, plus one of 8 preloaded custodian schedules dated September 29, 2026, or your own fees. It also compares 3 gold ETFs at their yearly fees: GLDM 0.10%, IAU 0.25% and GLD 0.40% (fund filings, 2025-2026).

Shared, or commingled, storage keeps your coins with others of the same type; segregated storage keeps yours apart. The exit fee is the cost to sell and close. The buyback gap is how far below metal value the dealer buys back.

Total cost, not account fees, decides which route is cheap. At American Hartford Gold's bullion spread of up to 19.99%, $100,000 over 10 years costs about $25,500. The low-cost bullion route, a 5.4% round trip plus $3,180 of fees, costs about $8,580.

The table below shows 10-year account fees with exit on $100,000 for 9 example setups, as of September 29, 2026. Fidelity is a comparison row, not one of the 8 preloaded schedules.

Setup Schedule or fund fee 10-year cost with exit
GoldStar, shared storage GTC Rev. 01/2026 $2,410
Equity Trust metals-only, shared storage FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726 $2,680
Equity Trust metals-only, segregated storage FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726 $3,180
STRATA, segregated storage Fee page modified August 31, 2026 $3,650
Entrust, plus depository storage Fee schedule Rev. 12-4-2025 $4,590
Madison Schedule effective January 1, 2026 $6,910
Fidelity (bullion in a Fidelity IRA; not preloaded, enter as your own fees) Fidelity fee schedule FA-FEES-0926 $6,990
GLDM (gold ETF) 0.10% a year $1,000
GLD (gold ETF) 0.40% a year $4,000

Dealer spread not included; add it with the calculator.

Flat fees hit small accounts hardest: $285 a year is 5.70% of a $5,000 account but 0.28% of $100,000. A flat fee can also rise: $285 growing 3% a year totals $3,267 over 10 years, not $2,850. The table below shows the fee structure that usually costs least at each account size.

Account size Usually cheapest structure
Under $25,000 A gold ETF, or GoldStar shared storage ($215 a year)
$25,000 to $57,000 Storage priced as a share of value
$57,000 to $250,000 Flat fees
$250,000 and up Flat fees with no value add-on (Equity Trust metals-only, STRATA)

Every layer of these gold IRA fees is explained in gold IRA fees.

2. Gold IRA Break-Even Calculator: how much gold must rise before you are even#

The gold IRA break-even calculator turns one price quote into the rise gold needs to get you back to even. A 23.4% spread needs a 30.5% rise before you gain a dollar.

Type a quote and the day's spot price, the market price for one ounce of pure metal, into the gold IRA break-even calculator. It starts from the CFTC's premium formula (release 8215-20, August 4, 2020), then adds buyback terms and fees.

Melt value is the metal in a coin priced at spot. Whatever you pay above melt value, gold's price must earn back. The table below shows the rise needed for 4 spreads found in company documents.

Spread in writing Source Rise needed Loss if sold back at once (with 4.6875% buyback gap)
19.99% Top of American Hartford Gold's bullion range, "up to" (agreement dated September 2026) +25.0% 23.7%
23.4% Lear Capital's own 2022 average (Chapter 11 plan, June 5, 2023) +30.5% 27.0%
39.99% American Hartford Gold's cap for "exclusive" coins, "up to" (same agreement) +66.6% 42.8%
59.99% American Hartford Gold's cap for limited numismatic coins, "up to" (same agreement) +149.9% 61.9%

A buyback gap adds to the spread. With Lear's 4.6875% example, a 23.4% spread needs a 37.0% rise, not 30.5%. Gold IRA markups and spreads rarely appear on a quote, so each figure is traced to its document in gold IRA markups and spreads.

Fees stretch the climb. On $100,000 with $50 setup, $285 a year and $280 to close, gold must rise by the yearly rates listed below for 10 years.

  • 5.4% round trip: 0.87% a year.
  • 23.4% spread plus the buyback gap: 3.52% a year.
  • 39.99% spread plus the buyback gap: 6.08% a year.

Small accounts need more. With $300 of first-year fees and a sale 1% below spot, a 5% premium needs a 9.2% rise in year one on $10,000, against 6.4% on $100,000. For scale, a 1 oz Gold Eagle's round trip (buy, then sell back at once) at SD Bullion was 5.39% on September 29, 2026.

3. Gold IRA Calculator: what your account could be worth after markup and fees#

The gold IRA calculator projects what a gold IRA could be worth after the dealer's spread and every yearly fee. In 21 of 41 real 10-year periods since 1975, $100,000 bought at a 23.4% spread, with a buyback gap and yearly fees, ended below $100,000.

The gold IRA calculator runs a fixed rate or every real start year since 1975, like a plain gold investment calculator with IRA costs added. Its fixed-rate presets are 0%, 4.76% a year (1980-2025), 8.89% (1972-2025) and 10.96% (2000-2025), from Damodaran's LBMA-based data at NYU Stern.

Each rate is a compound annual return: the steady yearly rate that gives the same end result. The default price change is 0%, so costs show alone, and taxes are not included. The table below runs $100,000 for 10 years at each preset and 4 cost levels.

Gold's yearly change No dealer cost 5.4% round trip 23.4% spread + gap 39.99% spread + gap
0% $96,820 $91,420 $69,829 $54,017
4.76% $156,024 $147,427 $113,054 $87,880
8.89% $231,178 $218,523 $167,923 $130,866
10.96% $279,741 $264,463 $203,379 $158,642

Every cell subtracts $3,180 of account fees paid from outside the IRA; the spread columns include the 4.6875% buyback gap.

The next table runs $100,000 through every real window on LBMA PM year-end prices: 41 ten-year windows starting 1975 to 2015 and 46 five-year windows starting 1975 to 2020. The median is the middle result.

Cost level 10-year windows below $100,000 Median 10-year value 5-year windows below $100,000
Zero costs 10 of 41 (24%) $139,287 15 of 46
Account fees only ($50 + $285 a year + $280) 11 of 41 (27%) $136,107 16 of 46
5.4% round trip + fees 13 of 41 (32%) $128,586 20 of 46
23.4% spread + 4.6875% buyback gap + fees 21 of 41 (51%) $98,513 26 of 46
39.99% spread + buyback gap + fees 25 of 41 (61%) $76,488 33 of 46

Worst 10-year window for every row: 1987-1997.

Shorter holds lost more often at every cost level. The worst window, 1987-1997, turned $100,000 into $59,946 with no costs, $56,766 with fees only and $40,586 at a 23.4% spread plus the gap and fees.

The tool warns you when a fixed rate is above 12% or below -5% a year, outside anything gold showed over 20-year periods from 1972 to 2025. Gold IRA returns since 1971 swing widely between windows; year-by-year figures are in gold IRA returns since 1971.

4. Gold Allocation Backtester: what a 5%, 10% or 20% gold slice does to your savings#

The gold allocation backtester shows what a chosen gold share means for your whole nest egg. A 10% slice of $500,000 costs $2,700 on day one at a low-cost 5.4% round trip and $11,700 at a 23.4% spread.

Opening in October 2026. Until then, multiply your gold dollars by the spread to see the day-one cost.

The gold allocation backtester tests 0-30% gold against real returns since 1972, from your savings, gold held now, target share, spread and fees. It never recommends a percentage.

A drawdown is a fall from a high. Gold's 53.5% drop from end-1980 to end-2000 would cut savings with a 10% slice by 5.35%.

Required withdrawals set a second limit. At 75 with $400,000 in traditional IRAs, the RMD is about $16,260. The IRA money outside gold covers it for about 22 years at 10% gold, about 12 years at 50% and not at all at 100%.

Dealers write their own limits. Lear Capital's terms (December 2025) cap metals at no more than 20% of available investment funds. American Hartford Gold's agreement (September 2026) says to hold "a minimum of five years or more." The "5-10%" rule on ranking pages cites no source. How much gold to hold in an IRA stays your call; the data is in how much gold to hold in an IRA.

5. Rollover Deadline Calculator: your exact 60-day date and the once-a-year check#

The rollover deadline calculator finds the last day you can put a retirement check back into an IRA. It follows the tax code's Washington, D.C. holiday rule: a check received February 15, 2026 is on time until April 17, 2026.

Enter the day the check arrived in the rollover deadline calculator. Day 1 is the day after you receive the money, and day 60 is the deadline (IRS Publication 590-A). The tool also runs the once-a-year check: after an earlier IRA rollover, day 366 is the first clearly safe day for another.

An indirect rollover pays the money to you to redeposit. A trustee-to-trustee transfer moves it between custodians with no check, no deadline and no withholding.

Withholding is the second trap. A plan check paid to you has 20% withheld by law (IRC 3405(c)), and IRA checks default to 10%. To roll over the full amount, you must replace the withheld part from other money within the 60 days. A direct rollover has no withholding.

The table below shows day 60 and the last safe day for 5 receipt dates.

Received Day 60 Last day Why
February 15, 2026 Thu April 16, 2026 Fri April 17, 2026 D.C. Emancipation Day
April 20, 2026 Fri June 19, 2026 Mon June 22, 2026 Juneteenth
September 29, 2026 Sat November 28, 2026 Mon November 30, 2026 Weekend (SafeOunce suggests aiming for November 13)
November 6, 2026 Tue January 5, 2027 Tue January 5, 2027 Crosses into the next tax year
December 15, 2026 Sat February 13, 2027 Tue February 16, 2027 Weekend plus Washington's Birthday

The 60-day rollover rule adds one trap for gold: you must redeposit the same property you took out. That trap is covered with the 60-day rollover rule.

A legal holiday means a federal or D.C. holiday. D.C. adds Emancipation Day, April 16, to the 11 federal holidays of 5 U.S.C. 6103 (D.C. Code 1-612.02). The Tax Court applied the rule in Estate of Caan (161 T.C. No. 6, 2023), moving a Sunday, January 24, 2016 deadline to Monday.

A custodian may not honor the extension, so SafeOunce suggests aiming for day 45.

6. Gold IRA Contribution Calculator: how much you can put in for 2026#

The gold IRA contribution calculator shows how much new money you can put into IRAs for 2026: $7,500, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older. It also shows how many years it takes to reach a gold IRA company's minimum.

Opening in October 2026 (planned). Until then, the 2026 limits above apply (IRS Notice 2025-67).

The gold IRA contribution calculator also shows the deduction and Roth limits under 26 U.S.C. 219 and 408A(c)(3), from your age, filing status, pay and income.

The catch-up contribution is the extra $1,100 allowed at 50 or older. A phase-out is the income range where the Roth contribution or deduction shrinks to zero, measured by MAGI (modified adjusted gross income). The 2026 Roth phase-out is $242,000-$252,000 joint and $153,000-$168,000 single. If a workplace plan covers you, the traditional IRA deduction phases out at $129,000-$149,000 joint and $81,000-$91,000 single.

The 2027 limits are not announced as of September 29, 2026. Gold IRA contribution limits follow the IRA type that holds the gold; SEP, SIMPLE and solo 401(k) amounts are in gold IRA contribution limits.

7. Gold IRA RMD Calculator: your required withdrawal in dollars, ounces and coins#

The gold IRA RMD calculator turns your required minimum distribution into ounces and whole coins. At 75, an IRA holding 24 one-ounce Gold Eagles must release about 1 coin in 2026.

Opening in October 2026.

The gold IRA RMD calculator divides last December 31's balance by a divisor, the IRS life-expectancy number from the Uniform Lifetime Table (26 CFR 1.401(a)(9)-9). The divisor is 26.5 at 73, 24.6 at 75, 20.2 at 80 and 16.0 at 85. That table applies unless a spouse more than 10 years younger is your sole beneficiary.

RMDs start at 73 if you were born 1951-1958 and at 75 if born 1960 or later. For 1959 the rule is unsettled, so the tool shows both ages. Proposed IRS regulations (REG-103529-23, not final) say 73, and the final rules (T.D. 10001, July 2024) say the law gives "both 73 and 75."

Silver moves more: at 73, 1,600 Silver Eagles needed 60.4 coins at the LBMA silver price of $71.99 (December 31, 2025), but 70.9 coins at $61.33 (LBMA, September 28, 2026).

The first RMD can wait until April 1 of the next year, but then 2 fall in one tax year; later ones are due by December 31. Born in 1953 with $250,000, you could delay a 2026 RMD of $9,433.96 to April 1, 2027. With $240,000 at the end of 2026, your 2027 total is then $18,845.73.

Gold IRA required minimum distributions carry a 25% excise tax on a shortfall, 10% if corrected in time (IRC 4974). Missing the $4,261.27 above would cost $1,065.32, or $426.13 if corrected; the rules are in gold IRA required minimum distributions.

8. IRA Eligibility Checker: can this coin or bar go in your gold IRA?#

The IRA eligibility checker tests one coin or bar in 3 layers: the tax code, your custodian's rules, and how the metal is held and bought.

Opening in October 2026.

The IRA eligibility checker asks 7 questions about one coin or bar, listed below in order.

  1. Metal: gold, silver, platinum or palladium only.
  2. Named coin: the tax code names the Gold Eagle (1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 oz), 1 oz Silver Eagle, Platinum Eagle and coins issued under state law, whatever their purity (408(m)(3)(A)).
  3. Fineness: purity, where .995 means 99.5% pure; bullion needs gold .995, silver .999, platinum and palladium .9995 (408(m)(3)(B)).
  4. Custodian policy: each custodian adds its own product list.
  5. Custody: the trustee holds the metal from day one.
  6. Purchase: IRA cash only, never from a disqualified person such as you or your spouse (408(a)(1), 4975(c)(1)(A)).
  7. Price warning: a flag when the price sits far above metal value.

The table below shows 8 test cases, checked September 29, 2026.

Coin or bar Tax code Result
1 oz Gold Eagle Named coin (.9167) Eligible
1 oz Krugerrand .9167, not named Not eligible
2010 Gold Britannia .9167 Not eligible
2020 Gold Britannia .9999 Eligible
Proof Gold Buffalo .9999 passes the law GoldStar refuses "U.S. Buffalo Proof": check your custodian
Graded Silver Eagle Named coin Depends on your custodian
1921 Morgan dollar Not named; silver below .999 Not eligible
1 oz rhodium bar Not one of the 4 metals Never eligible

For every coin and bar among the precious metals the tax code allows, see precious metals the tax code allows.

A collectible is an item an IRA may not buy, such as a Krugerrand or a rhodium bar. Buying one counts as a withdrawal of its cost (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(1)). Gold ETF shares such as GLD are not collectibles (IRS private letter ruling PLR 200732026).

9. Gold IRA Company Comparison Tool: companies side by side on dated facts#

The gold IRA company comparison tool lines up 9 gold IRA companies on 10 facts that cost or protect you. When a company does not publish a fact, the table says "Not published" instead of guessing.

The gold IRA company comparison tool has filters for published fees and regulator actions. Its 10 fields, checked September 29, 2026, run from the IRA minimum and written spread to arbitration and the BBB record. It shows no scores or ranking, and no company can pay for its place.

Arbitration is a private hearing instead of court, set by the contract.

As of September 29, 2026, Goldco lists a $25,000 minimum, Noble Gold $20,000 and Birch Gold $5,000. Augusta lists $50,000, according to Augusta's FAQ (last updated September 23, 2026). American Hartford Gold, Lear Capital, Preserve Gold and Priority Gold publish no IRA minimum.

One paid press release ranking for "gold ira tools" in September 2026 lists a $10,000 Lear minimum; Lear publishes none. Full reviews of the gold IRA companies, including those that failed, are in gold IRA companies.

The CFTC and FINRA advisory "10 Things to Ask" (2024) sets the test: "If fees are not available in writing before your purchase, that is a red flag."

What Do Most Online Gold IRA Calculators Leave Out? 7 Calculators Checked#

None of 7 gold IRA calculators ranking on Google in September 2026 counts markup, buyback, yearly fees and exit costs together, and 2 print the wrong 2026 IRA limit. An affiliate link pays the site when you contact a company through it, and a lead form collects your phone number for a salesperson. Six of the 7 calculators carry one or the other.

The table below shows what each calculator counts, read September 29, 2026.

The correct 2026 limits are $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older, with a $1,100 catch-up (IRS Notice 2025-67). A dealer's 2026 beginner guide that ranks for "gold ira tools" repeats the same wrong $7,000 and $8,000.

Return defaults carry no window and no source. The site goldiracheck.com says gold returned "approximately 8-10%" since 2000. The measured compound rate for 2000-2025 is 10.96% a year on Damodaran's LBMA-based series, and 11.0% on LBMA PM prices.

None of the 7 dates its fee inputs. None offers a historical start-year mode, a 60-day deadline that follows the D.C. holiday rule, an RMD in whole coins or a coin-by-coin eligibility check.

How Do SafeOunce's Gold IRA Tools Work? 8 Rules Every Tool Follows#

Every SafeOunce tool follows 8 rules: no sign-up, shown formulas, dated defaults, tables from the law itself, costs first, plain answers, nothing stored and no sales pitch. The 8 rules are listed below.

  1. No sign-up: no name, email or phone number, before or after the result.
  2. Formula shown: a "How we calculated this" panel sits under every result.
  3. Dated defaults: a default is the value filled in before you change it, and each one shows its date and source.
  4. Tables from the law itself: RMD divisors and holiday lists load from the regulation and statute text and are tested against known answers. A summarizing web tool once returned 26.4 for a joint-table divisor (ages 73 and 60) that the regulation sets at 28.6.
  5. Costs isolated first: the default gold price change is 0%, so you see what costs alone do; historical rates are labeled scenarios with their windows.
  6. Plain answer first: the result is a sentence, then the table.
  7. Nothing you type leaves your browser: the calculators make no network calls (checked in the code, September 29, 2026).
  8. No advice, no sales: no company or product is pushed from a result.

The tools suit older eyes and hands: labeled inputs, large tap targets, keyboard use, screen-reader results and no chart-only answers. How SafeOunce is paid is public too: see the full answer to who pays SafeOunce.

Where do the tools' numbers come from, and how old are they?#

Every number inside a SafeOunce tool comes from a named primary source with a date.

A fee schedule revision is the version code printed on a custodian's fee sheet, such as Rev. 081726. The table below lists each data set, its source and its date.

SafeOunce keeps a public corrections log. Every number we change is recorded in the corrections log.

Why do the tools show results instead of daily gold prices?#

The tools show computed results rather than a daily gold price chart because the benchmark gold price is licensed data.

IBA, or ICE Benchmark Administration, runs this official daily reference price. So the growth tool ships year-over-year growth factors, not daily prices, and shows computed results with a few cited reference fixings. Current prices elsewhere on SafeOunce come from a separate, dated price feed.

What Can a Gold IRA Calculator Not Tell You? 5 Limits#

A gold IRA calculator cannot tell you 5 things: future gold prices, your exact taxes, your dealer's actual quote, your custodian's product rules, or what is right for you. The 5 limits are listed below.

  1. Future prices: every rate in the tools is a scenario, and no tool makes a forecast. Gold fell in 19 of the 55 years from 1971 to 2025.
  2. Your taxes: the growth tool shows pre-tax dollars. Traditional IRA withdrawals are ordinary income, taxed at your normal income-tax rate, and a qualified Roth withdrawal is not taxed. The 28% collectibles rate applies only to gold sold outside an IRA.
  3. Your quote: your dealer's written price and buyback terms decide the real spread. Ask for both in writing before you pay, as the CFTC and FINRA advise.
  4. Your custodian's yes or no: the law sets eligibility, but each custodian adds its own product rules. GoldStar, for example, refuses proof Gold Buffalos (allowable-metals page, September 29, 2026).
  5. Personal advice: this is arithmetic, not advice. No tool weighs your health, income needs or other savings.

Gold IRA taxes depend on the account type, your bracket and the year you withdraw. How withdrawals are taxed is covered in gold IRA taxes.

How Can You Check Gold IRA Math by Hand? 4 Formulas#

You can check 4 key gold IRA numbers with a phone calculator: the rise a markup needs, the share fees take, your 60-day deadline and your RMD in ounces. That checks any quote or tool, including ours.

Each formula below has one worked line, using the same dated inputs as the tools above.

Markup: how much must gold rise to cover it?#

Divide the spread by 1 minus the spread: a 23.4% spread needs gold to rise 30.5% before you are even.

Rise needed = spread / (1 - spread)
0.234 / 0.766 = 0.305, a 30.5% rise

The spread here is the CFTC's premium measure. Its 2020 advisory (release 8215-20) gives it as "(Sales price - Spot price) / Sales price x 100 = Premium%." In plain English: subtract the metal's value from what you paid, then divide by what you paid.

Some dealers quote a markup over cost instead, which measures against metal value. A 100% markup is a 50% spread, and $100,000 at a 23% markup buys $81,301 of metal. For a markup m, the dealer keeps m / (1 + m) of your price, and the rise needed is m itself.

The spot price of gold is the market price for 1 ounce of pure gold, and SafeOunce explains why you pay more than the spot price of gold.

Yearly fees: what share of your balance do they take?#

Divide your yearly custodian and storage fees by your balance: a flat $285 a year takes 5.70% of a $5,000 account but 0.28% of $100,000.

Fee share = yearly fees / account value
$285 / $5,000 = 5.70%
$285 / $100,000 = 0.28%

A flat $285 costs less than a 0.50% value-based fee once your account is above $57,000 ($285 / 0.005).

Gold IRA custodian fees also include per-trade and wire charges, which this formula leaves out. Those are listed in gold IRA custodian fees.

60-day rollover: how do you count the days?#

Count 60 days from the day after the money reaches you, then move a weekend or D.C. holiday to the next business day. The 3 steps are listed below.

  1. Count the day after you receive the money as day 1.
  2. Count forward to day 60, your deadline.
  3. Move to the next business day if day 60 is a Saturday, Sunday or D.C. legal holiday, but aim for day 45, as SafeOunce suggests.

One IRA-to-IRA rollover is allowed per 12 months across all your IRAs (26 U.S.C. 408(d)(3)(B)). After a first receipt on March 10, 2026, March 9, 2027 is blocked and March 10, 2027 is unsettled. The first clearly safe day is March 11, 2027, day 366. After a leap-day receipt on February 29, 2028, wait until March 2, 2029, or use a direct transfer.

Transfers, conversions and plan rollovers do not count toward the one-rollover-per-year rule; its details are in the one-rollover-per-year rule.

RMD: how many ounces must come out?#

Divide last December 31's balance by your IRS divisor, then divide the result by the gold price on the day you take it: at 75 the divisor is 24.6.

RMD = December 31 balance / divisor
Ounces = RMD / price per ounce on the day you take it
$104,827.20 / 24.6 = $4,261.27
$4,261.27 / $4,144.55 = 1.028 oz

Coins taken out in kind are taxed at their value on the day they leave the IRA, reported on Form 1099-R. To cash out instead, the custodian sells the metal inside the IRA and sends you the money. Gold IRA distributions work either way, as shown step by step in gold IRA distributions.

Gold IRA calculator questions#

The 8 answers below cover common gold IRA calculator questions.

Are gold IRA calculators accurate?#

Only as accurate as their costs: a calculator that leaves out the markup and fees can overstate a 10-year result by about $40,000 on $100,000. Across 41 real 10-year windows since 1975, the median fell from $139,287 with no costs to $98,513 after a 23.4% spread, a buyback gap and fees: $40,774 less.

What return should you enter in a gold IRA calculator?#

Try 0% first to see what costs alone do, then a labeled historical rate such as 8.89% a year (1972-2025) or 4.76% (1980-2025). No single average is normal: gold fell in 19 of the 55 years from 1971 to 2025 on LBMA PM year-end prices.

Why do dealer calculators ask for your phone number?#

The calculator is a sales tool: its result page leads to a free kit or a call with a salesperson. American Bullion's calculator sits beside "Get Your FREE Gold Guide!" A kit form can include your consent to autodialed and prerecorded marketing calls.

Do SafeOunce tools save what you type?#

No: the calculators run in your browser and send nothing you type to SafeOunce or anyone else. SafeOunce read the calculator code on September 29, 2026 and found no network calls and no browser storage.

Do the tools work for silver, platinum and palladium?#

Partly: the growth calculator covers all 4 metals, and the eligibility checker applies each metal's purity minimum. The minimum is .999 for silver and .9995 for platinum and palladium. Past-year runs start in 1975 for gold and silver, and in 1991 for platinum and palladium.

What if you had invested $10,000 in gold 20 years ago?#

$10,000 of gold bought at the LBMA PM price of $603.00 on September 28, 2006 was worth $68,732 on September 28, 2026, before any costs. $1,000 bought on September 28, 2016 at $1,322.50 was worth about $3,134 on the same 2026 date. After a $50 setup, a 5% premium, $250 a year in fees and sales 1% below spot, the 20-year result drops to $49,929.

What is the downside of a gold IRA?#

The biggest downside is cost: at a 23.4% spread, gold must rise 30.5% before you are even. Gold also pays no interest or dividends. The real downsides of a gold IRA are weighed by reader situation in the real downsides of a gold IRA.

Price swings are the other risk. The LBMA PM price fell from $5,405.00 on January 29, 2026 to $4,144.55 on September 28, 2026, a 23.3% drop.

Is a free gold IRA kit the same as a calculator?#

No: a free gold IRA kit is a sales brochure sent in exchange for your contact details, while a calculator does math on your own numbers.

Birch Gold's 2026 kit, for example, runs 24 pages. Its form requires a phone number with consent to autodialed, prerecorded and ringless voicemail marketing. What is inside free gold IRA kits, and who calls next, is covered in free gold IRA kits.
