A silver IRA is an individual retirement account that owns physical silver, such as Silver Eagles or .999 fine bars, kept by a custodian in a vault, not at home. The custodian is the bank or trust company that holds the account for you. Its vault is called a depository.
A silver IRA works like a gold IRA, but silver swings over twice as hard. At one large dealer in September 2026, it also cost about three times as much to buy and sell back. You can add up to $7,500 of new money in 2026, or $8,600 at 50 or older. Moving an old 401(k) or IRA has no dollar limit.
This guide shows how a silver IRA works, 6 numbers on whether it pays and the 2 legal routes for silver. It also shows what $50,000 costs over 10 years: about $9,973 in Silver Eagles, against $5,374 in gold.
The table below sums up a silver IRA in 12 facts as of September 29, 2026.
| Item | 2026 value and source |
|---|---|
| What it holds | American Silver Eagles (named in the law) or silver bullion at least .999 fine, meaning 99.9% pure (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)) |
| Who holds it | A custodian (a bank or trust company); the silver sits in a depository (a private vault) |
| Yearly contribution limit | $7,500 of new money; $8,600 at 50 or older (IRS Notice 2025-67); shared with all your IRAs |
| Moving existing savings | No dollar limit and no tax when a transfer or direct rollover goes custodian to custodian |
| Account fees | $215 to $656 a year on $50,000, from four custodians' published 2026 fee lists |
| Buy-and-sell-back cost, 1 oz silver | About 15% to 20% the same day (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026; bids from its posted buyback page may lag the live quote); 1 oz Gold Eagle 5.39% |
| Silver price | LBMA $61.33 on September 28, 2026; record $118.45 on January 29, 2026 |
| Weight of $100,000 of silver | 1,630 oz, about 112 lb (51 kg), at $61.34 spot on September 29, 2026 |
| Required distributions (yearly withdrawals the IRS requires) | From age 73; 75 if born in 1960 or later; Roth IRAs: none in your lifetime |
| Home storage | Not allowed (McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10, 2021) |
| FDIC or SIPC cover? | No: FDIC (bank insurance) and SIPC (broker protection) never cover IRA metal; only the vault's insurance does, at metal value |
| IRS list of approved silver? | None exists (IRS Retirement Plan Investments FAQs) |
The 5 terms below appear on almost every line of this page.
| Term | Plain meaning |
|---|---|
| Spot price | The live market price for one troy ounce of pure silver, as a dealer quotes it ($61.34 at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026) |
| LBMA price | The daily benchmark price set in London by the London Bullion Market Association ($61.33 on September 28, 2026); this page uses it for history and returns |
| Premium | What you pay above spot; melt value is the worth of a coin's silver at spot |
| Round trip | What you lose if you buy and sell back the same day: the premium plus the gap to the dealer's buyback price (its bid) |
| Troy ounce (oz) | 31.1034768 grams, about 1.1 ordinary ounces; metal is always weighed in troy ounces |
What Is a Silver IRA, and How Does It Work?#
A silver IRA is an IRA that owns real silver the tax code allows (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)), bought and held for you by the account's custodian in a vault. The tax code calls coins and metals "collectibles", like art and stamps. An IRA that buys one is taxed as if it paid you the cost (408(m)(1)).
So how does any silver get in? Two exceptions open the door: Silver Eagles have counted since 1987 and silver bullion since 1998. A silver IRA is one kind of precious metals IRA, and the same rules cover gold, platinum and palladium.
Three things sold as "silver in an IRA" are not a silver IRA: a silver ETF, mining stocks and coins at home. A silver ETF, a fund that trades like a stock, is legal in a normal IRA, but the IRA owns shares, not metal (IRS letter ruling 200732026). Coins at home break the rule that the custodian must hold the silver.
Is a silver IRA its own type of account?#
No: a silver IRA is a normal traditional, Roth, SEP or SIMPLE IRA whose custodian lets it own physical silver, so the usual IRA limits and tax rules apply. People call it a self-directed IRA, meaning one where you choose assets most brokers do not offer. The 4 IRA types that can hold silver are listed below.
- Traditional IRA: money goes in before tax, and withdrawals are taxed as income.
- Roth IRA: taxed money goes in, and qualified withdrawals come out tax-free.
- SEP IRA: an IRA funded through self-employment or a small business.
- SIMPLE IRA: a small-employer IRA with its own limits.
Your 2026 limit of $7,500 is shared across all your traditional and Roth IRAs (IRS Publication 590-A). Few 401(k) plans offer physical metal, and solo 401(k)s and other plans are compared in which accounts can hold metal.
How does a silver IRA work? 5 steps from opening to cash-out#
A silver IRA works in 5 steps: open an account, move money in, choose the silver, let the custodian buy it, then hold, sell or take it out. Plan on about 2 to 6 weeks from opening to silver in the vault (SafeOunce estimate). The 5 steps are listed below.
- Open a self-directed IRA with a custodian that holds metal. Setup costs about $50 at GoldStar Trust and Equity Trust, and STRATA Trust waives its $50 fee online (2026 fee schedules). A self-directed IRA for gold and silver follows the normal IRA rules. The law gives you at least 7 days to cancel the new IRA for a full refund (Treas. Reg. 1.408-6).
- Move money in by transfer, direct rollover or new cash. A transfer moves IRA money straight to the new custodian. A direct rollover does the same from a 401(k) or other plan; a 60-day rollover sends a check to you first. Transfers and direct rollovers have no dollar cap; new cash is limited to $7,500 ($8,600 at 50+) for 2026.
- Choose the dealer and the exact silver, with the price per ounce in writing. The dealer sets the price, and custodians do not check it (SEC Initial Decision No. 1030, June 27, 2016).
- Let the custodian pay the dealer and the depository take delivery. Lock the price only after the custodian confirms your money is ready. If funding arrives late, dealers cancel and charge you any market loss. On a $50,000 order after a 2% drop, that is about $1,000 at JM Bullion. Gainesville Coins adds a 5% restocking fee, $3,500 in all (its terms of November 11, 2022).
- Hold the silver, then sell it or take it out. You pay yearly fees, and a sale inside the IRA is not taxed. Coins taken out "in kind" (the coins themselves) are taxed at their value that day, and buyback prices are covered in how to sell in your IRA and cash out.
Only three parties touch the deal: the custodian, the dealer and the depository. Silver uses the same forms as gold, shown with their costs in how to open a gold IRA in 5 steps.
Can you hold silver in a Roth IRA?#
Yes: a Roth IRA can hold the same silver as a traditional IRA, and qualified withdrawals of cash or coins are tax-free. A withdrawal is qualified when 5 years have passed since your first Roth IRA contribution and you are 59 1/2 or older (26 U.S.C. 408A). The table below compares the two kinds of silver IRA.
| Traditional silver IRA | Roth silver IRA | |
|---|---|---|
| Money in | Before tax, or deducted | After tax |
| Growth | Tax-deferred (taxed only when you withdraw) | Tax-free if the withdrawal is qualified |
| Money out | Ordinary income, like wages, for cash or coins | Qualified withdrawals tax-free |
| Required distributions | From 73 (75 if born in 1960 or later) | None in your lifetime |
Roth contributions shrink within a phase-out, the income range where the allowed amount falls to zero (IRS Notice 2025-67).
| Filing status | 2026 Roth phase-out range |
|---|---|
| Single | $153,000 to $168,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $242,000 to $252,000 |

Is a Silver IRA a Good Investment? 6 Numbers to Know First#
A silver IRA can fit someone who wants physical metal and can wait out long losses, but silver grew more slowly than gold since 1971 and swings twice as hard. The 6 numbers below use the LBMA silver price and one dealer's prices.
- Return: silver grew 7.1% a year from 1971 to 2025, against 9.0% for gold (LBMA calendar years, SafeOunce computation).
- Swings: volatility measures how far the price moves in a typical year. Silver's was 66.3% from 1971 to 2025, against 27.1% for gold. From 1991 it was 34.2% against 17.6%. Silver fell in 26 of those 55 years; gold fell in 19.
- 2026: silver's drawdown, its fall from a high, reached 53.3% this year. It went from a record $118.45 on January 29 to $55.29 on July 17 (LBMA). On September 28, 2026 it was $61.33, still 48.2% down, and its worst day, February 2, lost 20.6%. Take someone who bought 1 oz Silver Eagles at the record, paying an 11.2% premium. Selling back at the dealer's bid on September 29, 2026, they would be down 55.8% (SafeOunce computation, SD Bullion prices).
- Recovery: silver's 1980 peak of $49.45 (January 18, 1980) came back in dollars only on October 9, 2025, 45.7 years later. After inflation, silver is still 71.2% below that peak. Every drop is dated in gold and silver crashes.
- Crisis behavior: silver rose in only 3 of 8 US recessions since 1969, while gold rose in 7 of 8. The month-by-month record is in gold and silver during recessions. Silver also fell in 8 of 11 stock market drops of 19% or more since 1968 (S&P 500 index).
- Cost to get in and out: 1 oz Silver Eagles bought and sold back the same day lost 14.6%. A 1 oz Gold Eagle lost 5.39% (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026). Its bids come from a posted buyback page that may lag the live quote.
Silver also rose 149.1% in 2025 (LBMA), so its big gains and big falls are the same trait. No sourced rule says how much of your savings belongs in silver, and SafeOunce does not give one.
What would $10,000 in silver 20 years ago be worth today?#
$10,000 of silver bought on September 28, 2006 was worth $52,599 at the LBMA price 20 years later, and about $39,904 inside a low-cost silver IRA after costs. The LBMA price rose from $11.66 to $61.33 an ounce. The table below shows the same $10,000 in 4 cases.
| Case ($10,000 from September 28, 2006) | Value on September 28, 2026 | Yearly return |
|---|---|---|
| Silver at spot, no costs | $52,599 | 8.7% |
| Silver after an 11.2% premium and a sale at the dealer's bid | $44,934 | 7.8% |
| Silver after premium, bid and 20 years of account fees | $39,904 | 7.2% |
| Gold at spot, no costs | $68,732 | 10.1% |
Our data has no 2006 premiums, so the cost cases use SD Bullion's September 29, 2026 prices for both the purchase and the sale. It charged 11.2% over spot for random-year Silver Eagles (any mint year, the cheapest Eagle) and bid $58.27 against $61.34 spot. Fees follow Equity Trust's metals-only list: $50 setup, $235 a year and $280 to exit, $5,030 in all (SafeOunce computation).
A shorter window looks better: $1,000 of silver on September 28, 2016 ($19.12) was worth $3,208 ten years later. Gold's year-by-year record, with the same cost method, is in gold IRA returns since 1971.
What will 1 oz of silver be worth in 10 years?#
Nobody can know, and SafeOunce does not forecast prices: in 46 ten-year periods since 1971, $10,000 of silver ended between $1,620 and $94,834, and 13 periods lost money. For 1 oz, that means an ounce lost up to 84% of its value or grew up to 9.5 times. The periods overlap (1971-80, 1972-81 and so on to 2016-25) and use LBMA yearly returns at spot. The table below compares silver with gold, before and after IRA costs.
| $10,000 held for 10 years | Silver | Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Worst period | $1,620 (1980-89) | $5,995 (1988-97) |
| 25th percentile (about 1 in 4 periods did worse) | $8,948 | $10,430 |
| Median (the middle result) | $12,642 | $16,008 |
| Median after IRA costs | About $10,300 | About $14,600 |
| 75th percentile (about 1 in 4 periods did better) | $24,614 | $28,937 |
| Best period | $94,834 (1971-80) | $157,772 (1971-80) |
| Periods that lost money, before costs | 13 of 46 | 10 of 46 |
| Periods that lost money, after IRA costs | 22 of 46 | 14 of 46 |
After costs, almost half of all silver decades lost money: 22 of 46, against 14 of 46 for gold. The after-cost rows apply the round trip on 1 oz Eagles (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026) to every period. They also deduct Equity Trust metals-only fees, $2,680 on $50,000 scaled to $10,000 (SafeOunce computation).
Who a silver IRA fits, and who it does not#
A silver IRA fits people who move $50,000 or more of old savings, want real metal and can hold 10 years; it costs too much for small or short-term money. The table below matches 6 situations with what the numbers say.
| Your situation | What the numbers say | Where to read next |
|---|---|---|
| Under about $10,000 to put in silver | Fixed fees of $215 to $656 a year are 2.2% to 6.6% of $10,000 (2026 schedules), on top of a 15% to 20% round trip. A silver ETF in an IRA you already have costs 0.30% to 0.50% a year | Silver IRA vs a silver ETF, below |
| $50,000 or more in an old 401(k) or IRA, want physical metal, can hold 10+ years | Silver must rise about 23% to break even after 10 years of fees in 1 oz Silver Eagles. Bars and low-premium coins cost less to buy, but their buyback bids are lower too | How much a silver IRA costs, below |
| May need the money within about 5 years | Silver fell 53.3% from January to July 2026, and selling costs 15% to 20% at once | The 6 numbers, above |
| Already own gold in an IRA and want variety | Silver adds swings (66.3% yearly volatility against 27.1% for gold), not stability | Gold vs silver IRA |
| Want to hold the silver yourself | Not possible in an IRA; buy it outside with after-tax money | Silver you keep yourself, below |
| Someone is urging "exclusive" or fractional silver coins | This is the pattern behind the Metals.com, Red Rock and Safeguard cases | How silver IRA pitches go wrong, below |
SIVR and SLV are two large silver ETFs. SIVR charges 0.30% under a fee cut that runs to February 28, 2027 (0.45% normally); SLV charges 0.50% (2025 annual reports).
Three facts change the math at 60 or older. The 10% additional tax in this page's examples ends at 59 1/2. Required yearly withdrawals start at 73, or 75 if you were born in 1960 or later. They force sales at the dealer's bid, unless you take the amount from another traditional IRA.
Before you sign, ask 3 questions in writing. What is the price per ounce, and today's buyback bid? Which fee schedule applies? Where will the silver be stored? For gold, the same verdict by situation is in pros, cons and the real downsides of a gold IRA.
Which Silver Can a Silver IRA Hold? The 2 Legal Routes#
Silver gets into an IRA by 2 routes: it is an American Silver Eagle, the coin the law names, or it is 99.9% pure bullion held by the custodian. Route A is the 1 oz Silver Eagle: 31.103 grams of .999 silver with a $1 face value (31 U.S.C. 5112(e)). No fractional (smaller than 1 oz) Silver Eagles exist. IRS Publication 590-A allows "one-ounce silver coins minted by the Treasury Department."
Route B is bullion held by the trustee at the purity a contract market requires. A contract market is a US futures exchange, where traders agree today on metal delivered later; COMEX is the main one for silver. So the exchange's rule decides which silver the tax code allows, and the full list for all four metals is in which silver the tax code allows.
Gold's number is .995 for the same reason. The Silver Eagle passes because Congress named it, not because of a purity test, and why each metal has its own number is in .999 silver purity requirements.
The IRS keeps no list of approved silver: "there is no list of approved investments" (IRS Retirement Plan Investments FAQs). Mint law calls Silver Eagles "numismatic items" (31 U.S.C. 5112(f)(3)), a term that usually means collector coins, but it only governs how the Mint sells them. Custodians add their own rules on top of the law, as the table below shows (2026 lists).
| Custodian | Silver rule (2026 list) |
|---|---|
| GoldStar Trust | Minimum .9990 fine; proof coins (a collector finish) only "ungraded, complete with certificate of authenticity and in original mint packaging"; graded coins refused |
| Equity Trust | Certified (graded) Eagles "are not acceptable in IRAs at this time"; its maker list includes ISO 9000, a general quality certificate, so plain generic rounds pass |
| STRATA Trust | Accepts "American Eagle bullion and proof coins" |
No IRS ruling or court case covers proof Eagles, so custodian practice decides. The IRS approves no coins, so "IRS-approved" silver is a sales phrase; its only list covers trustees, as explained in "IRS-approved" gold IRA custodians.
Silver Eagle, Maple Leaf, bars or rounds: which is best for an IRA?#
Bars and low-premium coins buy the most silver per dollar: on September 29, 2026, a 2026 Britannia cost 3.1% over spot, against 16.1% for a new Silver Eagle. But low-premium products also get lower buyback bids, so the cheapest to buy is not always the cheapest to own. A round is a coin-shaped piece from a private maker, with no face value. The table below ranks 10 allowed products by premium at one dealer.
| Product | Price | Premium over $61.34 spot | Route | Custodian note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Silver Britannia, 1 oz | $63.22 | 3.1% | B | 2013 or later only |
| Generic 1 oz round | $64.22 | 4.7% | B | Accepted from a listed maker; see silver rounds in an IRA |
| 100 oz generic bar | $6,521.95 ($65.22/oz) | 6.3% | B | See IRA-eligible silver bars |
| Kilo generic bar (32.15 oz) | $2,096.87 | 6.3% | B | From a listed refiner |
| Silver Philharmonic, random year | $66.21 | 7.9% | B | Named on STRATA and GoldStar lists |
| Silver Maple Leaf, random year | $66.22 | 8.0% | B | .9999 fine |
| Silver Eagle, random year | $68.22 | 11.2% | A | See American Silver Eagle in an IRA |
| 2026 Silver Eagle (1-19 coins) | $71.22 | 16.1% | A | Named coin |
| Silver Eagle proof | $81.22 | 32.4% | Custodian practice (no IRS ruling) | Accepted only under custodian conditions |
| 1/10 oz 2026 Britannia | $14.61 ($146.10/oz) | 138.2% | B | Eligible, but never worth the premium |
The table below matches the product to your situation.
| Your situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under $10,000, may sell in pieces | 1 oz Maple Leaf, Philharmonic or 2013+ Britannia | Premiums of 3% to 10%; one coin can be sold at a time |
| You want the coin the law names | Silver Eagle, random year | 11.2% premium, but the highest bid: $58.27 |
| $20,000 or more of silver, long hold | Kilo or 100 oz bars | 6.3% premium |
| You expect to take required distributions in coins | A mix of 1 oz coins and 10 oz bars | Small pieces can leave the vault one at a time |
| Lowest entry price | 2026 Britannia (3.1%) or generic 1 oz rounds (4.7%) | Both have low bids: $54.27 and $53.27, against $58.27 for Eagles |
| Anyone | Never fractional, privy-marked (a small special mark), proof, graded, "exclusive" or novelty silver | High premiums you rarely get back |
$50,000 buys 702 oz of 2026 Silver Eagles but 791 oz of 2026 Britannias: about 89 more ounces, worth about $5,450 at spot (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026).
Another large dealer, APMEX, shows the same gap. Its prices appear in a Gratus Reserve offering filed with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) on January 14, 2026.
| Product (APMEX, January 2026) | Price per oz | Over COMEX silver ($92.15) |
|---|---|---|
| Silver Eagle | $104.38 | 13.27% |
| 100 oz bar | $99.73 | 8.23% |
On $50,000 of silver at the COMEX price, the Eagle route cost about $2,520 more. Sellers call these products "IRA-approved silver", though the right term is IRA-eligible; every allowed coin, bar and round is listed on the "IRA-approved silver" page.
Which silver is not allowed in an IRA?#
Pre-1965 "junk" coins, classic Morgan dollars and Britannias dated 2012 or earlier are the silver an IRA most often cannot hold, because they are neither Silver Eagles nor .999 fine. The 6 kinds of metal that custodians refuse are listed below.
- Pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and half dollars ("junk silver"): 90% silver.
- Classic Morgan and Peace dollars: 90% silver, 0.7734 oz each.
- Silver Britannias dated 1997 to 2012: .958 fine.
- Mexican Onza: .925 fine.
- Graded or "slabbed" coins (sealed in a plastic holder with a grade): refused by Equity Trust and GoldStar. That includes an MS-70 Silver Eagle that cost $97.22, 58.5% over spot (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026).
- Rhodium, iridium and other minor platinum-group metals: collectibles in any form, and not silver at all.
More foreign pieces are listed in coins and bars you cannot hold in an IRA.
Morgan dollars dated 2021 and later are .999 silver, but a boxed 2023 coin cost $99.99 for 0.8585 oz, about 90% over melt value (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026). Custodians may refuse them.
Proof coins are allowed only on each custodian's terms, set out in proof and graded coins in an IRA.
Can you put silver coins you already own into an IRA?#
No: IRA contributions must be cash, so silver you already own must be sold and the cash contributed within the yearly limit. The law says "no contribution will be accepted unless it is in cash" (26 U.S.C. 408(a)(1)), except for rollovers.
In plain English, you cannot hand your coins to the IRA, and you cannot sell them to it either. That sale is a prohibited transaction, a deal between you and your IRA that the law bans (26 U.S.C. 4975). It makes the whole IRA count as withdrawn, and taxed, at its January 1 value (408(e)(2)).
The 2026 gold IRA contribution limits apply to that cash.
Can you keep silver IRA coins at home?#
No: IRA silver kept at home, even by an LLC you control, counts as withdrawn, and the Tax Court applied that rule to 2,000 Silver Eagles in 2021. In McNulty v. Commissioner, an LLC (a small company) owned by Mrs. McNulty's IRA bought 2,000 one-ounce Silver Eagles in 2016. They cost $37,380, or $18.69 each. The LLC had bought 320 Gold Eagles for $374,000 in 2015. She kept the coins in a home safe, and the court taxed both purchases as withdrawals of their cost (157 T.C. No. 10, November 18, 2021, docket 1377-19).
The table below shows the extra federal tax on coins taken home (married filing jointly, $80,000 of other taxable income, 2026 brackets; SafeOunce computation). At 59 1/2 or older, only the middle column applies.
| Coins taken home | Extra federal tax | With the 10% additional tax under 59 1/2 |
|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $8,920 | $13,920 |
| $100,000 | $19,920 | $29,920 |
The full ruling and the red flags of every home storage gold IRA pitch apply to silver.
Where is silver IRA metal stored, and can it be segregated?#
Silver IRA metal sits in a private vault such as the Delaware Depository, Brink's or IDS, and segregated storage (your silver kept apart) is often not offered. No IRS list of vaults exists. The IRS's only list covers 73 nonbank trustees (April 1, 2026), and its one metals business is Lone Star Tangible Assets, which runs the Texas Bullion Depository. Fees and owners of the main gold IRA depositories differ.
Silver is bulky: $100,000 of it weighs about 112 pounds, against 1.65 pounds of gold. The table below shows the weights at spot prices on September 29, 2026.
| Metal | Troy ounces | Kilograms | Pounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | 1,630.3 | 50.71 | 111.8 |
| Gold | 24.1 | 0.75 | 1.65 |
| Platinum | 58.6 | 1.82 | 4.0 |
| Palladium | 80.3 | 2.50 | 5.5 |
Silver needs about 68 times the vault space per dollar of gold: one ounce of gold bought 67.6 ounces of silver on September 28, 2026 (LBMA prices). A flat fee, such as Equity Trust's $110 a year for non-segregated storage (2026), ignores that bulk. A fee based on value, such as Fidelity's 0.50% a year, costs $250 on $50,000 (fee schedule, September 29, 2026). Rates are compared in gold IRA storage fees in 2026.
Insurance also covers less than a seller may suggest, as the 4 facts below show.
- FDIC insurance: only uninvested cash, up to $250,000, never IRA metal.
- SIPC protection: securities at a failed broker, up to $500,000, never metal.
- Delaware Depository insurance: $1 billion all-risk plus $100 million backup cover. It pays metal value, not premiums, unless a declared value is on file. It excludes war, terrorism, cyber events and seizure by a government (Delaware Depository FAQ, September 29, 2026).
- Silver the Delaware Depository holds for COMEX, the exchange: 16,539,505 oz on September 28, 2026, worth about $1,014.5 million at $61.34. That alone is more than the $1 billion all-risk policy, before any gold or other metal in the vault.
Commingled storage keeps your silver with the same products of other owners. It is still allocated, meaning recorded as yours by count, but you may not get the same coins back. Segregated storage keeps your exact pieces on their own shelf. For silver, it depends on the custodian and vault, as shown below (2026 fee pages).
| Custodian and vault | Segregated silver? |
|---|---|
| STRATA or Entrust at the Delaware Depository | No: gold, platinum and palladium only |
| GoldStar at the Delaware Depository | Only 1,000 oz silver bars |
| Forge Trust at the Delaware Depository | No segregated silver |
| Texas Precious Metals Depository, International Depository Services, A-Mark Global Logistics, Texas Bullion Depository | Segregated silver coins available |
The difference, and what it costs, is explained in segregated vs commingled storage.
How Much Does a Silver IRA Cost? $50,000 Over 10 Years#
On $50,000 held 10 years at a flat price, a silver IRA in 1 oz Silver Eagles costs about $9,973, almost twice the $5,374 for gold. The bigger cost for silver is the spread, the gap between the dealer's selling price and its buyback price. The 5 cost layers are listed below.
- Dealer premium: what you pay above spot when you buy.
- Buyback gap: how far the dealer's bid sits below spot when you sell.
- Setup fee: a one-time custodian charge, often $50.
- Yearly custodian and storage fees: $215 to $656 at $50,000 (2026 schedules).
- Trade and exit fees: per-trade charges at some custodians, and a closing fee of $150 to $250.
The CFTC, the US futures regulator, says bullion typically sells 5% to 10% over spot. Numismatic (collector) coins sell 40% to 200% over (advisory 8215-20, August 4, 2020). Every layer is compared in silver and gold IRA fees.
The table below shows 4 custodian fee schedules published in 2026.
| Custodian (schedule) | Setup | Annual fee | Storage: commingled / segregated | Segregated silver? | Close account |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GoldStar Trust | $50 | $90 | $125 / $225 minimum | At Delaware: 1,000 oz bars only | $150 |
| Equity Trust, metals-only | $50 | $125 | $110 / $160 | Ask in writing | $250 |
| STRATA Trust | $50, waived online | $150 | $115 / $175, plus $75 per trade | Not at Delaware; TPMD offers it | $250 |
| Madison Trust | See schedule | $556 | $100 minimum | Not published | $225 |
Equity Trust's Universal IRA schedule (Rev. 110625) costs more: $610 a year at $50,000 with non-segregated storage. Ask Equity Trust in writing which schedule your account would use. Every schedule is compared in IRA custodians and what they charge.
The table below prices $50,000 bought and sold at a flat price after 10 years. It uses Equity Trust's metals-only fees: $50 setup, $235 a year and $280 to exit, $2,680 in all.
| Product ($50,000) | Round trip | Account fees | Total cost | Price rise to break even |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz Gold Eagles | $2,694 | $2,680 | $5,374 (10.7%) | 11.4% |
| 1 oz Silver Eagles, random year | $7,293 | $2,680 | $9,973 (19.9%) | 23.4% |
| Silver Maple Leafs | $7,513 | $2,680 | $10,193 (20.4%) | 24.0% |
| 100 oz silver bars | $7,628 | $2,680 | $10,308 (20.6%) | 24.3% |
Bars cost slightly more than Eagles here: they are cheaper to buy, but their bid sat 9.9% under spot, against 5.0% for Eagles (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026). If costs take 19.9% of your $50,000, what is left must grow 23.4% to get back to $50,000. Test other balances in the gold IRA fee calculator.
The IRS sets no minimum balance. Company minimums and Fidelity's $1,000 IRA purchase minimum show how much money you need to start a metals IRA.
Why is silver's spread about three times gold's?#
Silver's spread is about three times gold's because dealers set their selling and buyback prices much further apart on silver than on gold. At SD Bullion on September 29, 2026, a random-year Silver Eagle sold 11.2% over spot and was bid 5.0% under it. Its same-day round trip lost 14.6%, against 5.39% for a 1 oz Gold Eagle. The table below shows the round trip for 8 products at SD Bullion.
| Product | Same-day round-trip loss | Price rise needed to break even |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz Silver Eagle, random year | 14.6% | 17.1% |
| 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf | 15.0% | 17.7% |
| Kilo silver bar | 15.2% | 17.9% |
| 100 oz silver bar | 15.3% | 18.0% |
| 1 oz generic silver round | 17.1% | 20.6% |
| 1 oz silver bar | 18.0% | 22.0% |
| 1 oz Silver Britannia, random year | 19.6% | 24.4% |
| 1 oz Gold Eagle | 5.39% | 5.7% |
Low-premium products also carry low bids. SD Bullion bid $58.27 for a random-year Silver Eagle, $54.27 for a Britannia (11.5% under spot) and $53.27 for a generic round (13.2% under). That spread is the largest cost, as explained in gold IRA markups and spreads.
What price must silver reach before you break even?#
On $50,000, silver must rise from $61.34 to between $69 and $149 an ounce over 10 years just to cover costs, depending on the product and the dealer's markup. The table below uses the same $2,680 of Equity Trust metals-only fees as above and the $61.34 spot price of September 29, 2026. Break-even today is the price paid; the next column adds 10 years of fees, and the last also assumes a sale at 10% under spot.
| Purchase choice | Price paid per oz | Ounces bought | Break-even today | After 10 years of fees | If sold 10% under spot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A) 2026 Silver Eagles, 500+ coins | $69.22 | 722.3 | $69.22 (+12.8%) | $72.93 (+18.9%) | $81.03 (+32.1%) |
| B) 100 oz bars | $65.22 | 766.6 | $65.22 (+6.3%) | $68.72 (+12.0%) | $76.36 (+24.5%) |
| C) A dealer at the top of American Bullion's 7%-23% spread range | $79.66 | 627.6 | $79.66 (+29.9%) | $83.94 (+36.8%) | $93.27 (+52.1%) |
| D) Illustrative 130% markup on spot | $141.08 | 354.4 | $141.08 (+130%) | $148.65 (+142.3%) | $165.17 (+169.3%) |
Choice C follows American Bullion's Shipping and Transaction Agreement (October 2024). It puts the "Spread" at typically 7% to 23% of the selling price. A 23% spread means a price of $61.34 ÷ 0.77 = $79.66, if the dealer paid spot. Choice D is illustrative. Red Rock's markups of up to about 130% were over its own cost, so its buyers paid even more over melt value (SEC complaint, 2023). A costlier fee schedule, such as Equity Trust's Universal IRA, raises every break-even.
In plain English: the product and the dealer decide whether silver has to rise 12% or 142% before you are even. Test your own quote in the gold IRA break-even calculator, using the silver price per ounce.
Why does your first silver IRA statement show less than you paid?#
Your first statement shows less than you paid because the custodian values silver near spot, not at your price with the dealer's premium. Common coins cost 3% to 16% over spot at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026. Equity Trust, for example, values metal at "the previous day's metal type value." In plain English: yesterday's market price for that metal, not what you paid.
A proof Eagle bought at a 32.4% premium shows about a quarter less than it cost: $100 of cost shows as $75.50 (100 ÷ 132.4 = 75.5%). Every line is explained in your gold IRA statement: why it shows less than you paid.
Is "free silver" really free?#
No: free silver is only free if the rest of the order is not overpriced, so divide what you pay by the ounces you receive, bonus included. Say you pay $12,000 for silver worth $10,000 at spot, a 20% markup, and get 10% bonus silver. You now hold $11,000 of silver. Your real premium is $12,000 ÷ $11,000 - 1 = 9.1%. The table below applies the same formula, (1 + markup) ÷ (1 + bonus) - 1, to 3 offers.
| Markup on the coins | Bonus silver | Real premium |
|---|---|---|
| 20% | 10% | 9.1% |
| 35% | 10% | 22.7% |
| 23% | 5% | 17.1% |
Goldco gives up to 5% bonus silver on $50,000 to $99,999 and 10% on $100,000 or more (goldco.com, September 29, 2026). The bonus comes only in "Goldco premium coins", and the page shows no price or spread. American Hartford Gold advertises free silver "up to $15,000 on qualifying purchases" (September 2026).
Red Rock Secured told one client he would receive "upwards of 15%" in bonus metal while it marked coins up to 130% over its own cost (SEC complaint, 2023). After that bonus, he still paid about 100% over cost. How such offers are paid for is shown in free silver and bonus metal promotions.
What IRS Rules Apply to a Silver IRA? 9 Rules for 2026#
A silver IRA follows the same IRS rules as any IRA, plus 2 rules for metal: only eligible silver may be bought, and the custodian, not you, must hold it. The table below lists all 9 rules with their sources as of September 29, 2026.
| # | Rule | Source | In plain English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eligible silver only | 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3); 408(m)(1) | Silver Eagles or .999 bullion; a wrong purchase is taxed as a withdrawal of its cost |
| 2 | The trustee holds the silver | 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B); McNulty v. Commissioner (2021) | Never at home or in a company you control |
| 3 | Contributions: cash only | 26 U.S.C. 408(a)(1); IRS Notice 2025-67 | $7,500, or $8,600 at 50+, for 2026; you need earned income; 2027 limits not announced as of September 29, 2026 |
| 4 | Transfers are unlimited | IRS Publication 590-A | Moving money custodian to custodian has no yearly limit and is not a rollover |
| 5 | 60-day rollover rule | 26 U.S.C. 408(d)(3); Estate of Caan, 161 T.C. No. 6 (2023) | Deposit by day 60, and return the same property you took out |
| 6 | One IRA-to-IRA 60-day rollover per 12 months | Bobrow v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo. 2014-21; Announcement 2014-15 | The limit counts across all your IRAs |
| 7 | 20% withholding | 26 U.S.C. 3405(c) | A plan check paid to you loses 20% to tax withholding |
| 8 | IRA prohibited transactions for gold and silver | 26 U.S.C. 4975; 408(e)(2) | No personal use; no selling your own coins to the IRA |
| 9 | Required distributions | 26 U.S.C. 401(a)(9); 4974 | From 73 (75 if born in 1960 or later); a 25% penalty tax if missed, 10% if corrected |
The other 7 rules are ordinary IRA law from IRS Publication 590-A and Notice 2025-67. Each rule, with its source, is also in gold IRA rules.
New contributions need earned income, such as wages or self-employment pay. A retiree without earned income can still move old savings in by transfer or rollover.
The ban on collectibles in IRAs dates from 1981 (Pub. L. 97-34); the IRS collectibles rule explains why a wrong coin is taxed as a withdrawal.
How do you roll a 401(k) or IRA into a silver IRA?#
Move it custodian to custodian: a transfer or a direct rollover is not taxed and has no withholding, while a check made out to you starts a 60-day clock. A check from a 401(k) also loses 20% to withholding, the tax a plan keeps back and sends to the IRS. The table below compares the 3 ways to move money.
| Method | Withholding | Yearly limit | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| IRA-to-IRA transfer | None | None; it is not a rollover | Low: the money never reaches you |
| Direct rollover from a 401(k) | 0% | None | Low: the check is payable to the new custodian |
| 60-day rollover (check paid to you) | 20% from a 401(k); 10% default from an IRA | One IRA-to-IRA rollover per 12 months | Missing day 60, or not replacing the 20% withheld |
A 401(k) at your current job can usually move only after you leave, or from age 59 1/2 if the plan allows it (26 U.S.C. 401(k)(2)(B)(i)(III)). Every source, from the federal Thrift Savings Plan to pensions, is covered in gold IRA rollover.
The costliest mistake is a 401(k) check paid to you, as shown below.
Plans use the same forms for silver as for gold, shown step by step in 401(k) to gold IRA rollover.
A 60-day IRA rollover must also return the same property: you cannot withdraw cash and deposit silver coins. The Tax Court applied this in Lemishow v. Commissioner, 110 T.C. 110 (1998), and Estate of Caan, 161 T.C. No. 6 (2023). Rolling a 401(k) into any IRA also gives up the 3 plan features below.
- Rule of 55: penalty-free withdrawals after you leave a job in or after the year you turn 55.
- Still-working delay: no required distributions from a current employer's plan while you still work there.
- Plan loans: up to half your vested balance (the part you own outright), capped at $50,000, or up to $10,000 if half is less (26 U.S.C. 72(p)(2)(A)).
For money already in an IRA, ask for an IRA to gold IRA transfer, not a check made out to you.
How are silver IRA withdrawals taxed?#
Withdrawals from a traditional silver IRA are taxed as ordinary income, like wages, whether you take cash or coins; the 28% collectibles rate never applies inside an IRA. Coins taken in kind are taxed at their fair market value (what they would sell for) on the day they leave. The custodian reports that value in box 1 of Form 1099-R (IRS Publication 590-B). Forms and state rules are in gold IRA taxes.
Before age 59 1/2, a traditional withdrawal also owes a 10% additional tax unless an exception applies (26 U.S.C. 72(t)). IRAs withhold 10% by default, and you can change that on Form W-4R.
Some sellers warn of a 28% tax on silver. That rate is real, but it covers only silver held outside an IRA (26 U.S.C. 1(h)(4)-(5); IRS Topic 409). IRA withdrawals are ordinary income, so the separate tax on net investment income does not apply. The full comparison is in the 28% collectibles rate.
How do RMDs work when your IRA holds silver?#
From age 73, or 75 if born in 1960 or later, you must withdraw a minimum each year, in cash or in coins valued on the day they leave. RMD stands for required minimum distribution, this yearly withdrawal. Your age is 73 if you were born in 1959, under proposed IRS rules (REG-103529-23) that are not final. The full gold IRA required minimum distributions rules apply to silver.
Taking coins costs extra. Equity Trust's metals-only schedule charges $125 to send coins out, plus shipping cost and $10 (minimum $50). That is at least $175, about 4% of the RMD above; selling inside the IRA costs a $30 sale fee instead. GoldStar charges $75 to send coins out, plus $10 and shipping (2026 schedules). A 100 oz bar cannot be split, so you would take cash or the whole bar. Bulk also meets shipping limits: the Delaware Depository insures each package only up to $100,000, at spot "without regard to premiums" (Shipping FAQ, effective November 18, 2024). That is about 112 lb of silver at September 29, 2026 spot.
RMDs from several traditional IRAs can be added up and taken from one of them, but taking more earns no credit for later years. You can plan RMDs in coins with the gold IRA RMD calculator.
How Do Silver IRA Pitches Go Wrong? 3 Cases and 6 Checks#
The costliest silver IRA mistakes come from overpriced coins, not ineligible ones: in three federal silver cases, markups ran from an average 71% to an alleged 213%. "Over cost" compares the price with what the dealer paid; "over market" compares it with the market price. A consent order is a court order the company agrees to, and restitution is money ordered back to customers. The table below sums up the 3 cases as of September 29, 2026.
| Case (agency, number) | Silver product | What buyers paid | Stated vs actual cost | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metals.com / TMTE (CFTC and 30 states, N.D. Tex. 3:20-cv-02910-X) | 1/2 oz silver "Polar Bear" coins | 4.1 million coins for over $102.4 million, about $49.95 per ounce (alleged) | Written spreads of 2% to 33% (later 1% to 19.9%); alleged average markup of 213% over market price | Pending: the court refused to decide it without a trial (August 3, 2026); civil trial set for March 1, 2027; an $8 million interim payout to claimants |
| Red Rock Secured (charged May 15, 2023, SEC complaint; CFTC 8704-23; now American Coin Co., SEC LR-25996, May 7, 2024) | 1/2 oz silver Red-Tailed Hawk coins | At least 950 people paid over $69 million for coins worth about $30 million | Customers told of markups of 4% to 29%, or 1% to 5%; actual markups of 91.89% to 129.97% over cost | CFTC consent order April 23, 2024: $38,984,313.90 restitution + $5.1 million given-up profits + $12.25 million penalty = $56,334,313.90 |
| Safeguard Metals (CFTC 8812-23; consent order on liability October 25, 2023) | Silver coins | $66,948,960 from more than 450 customers | Average 71% markup against a 23% stated maximum | CFTC final judgment September 30, 2025: $25,569,303 restitution and the same as a penalty, offset with the SEC judgment of May 2, 2025 |
Every case since 2008 is tracked in precious metals IRA enforcement actions.
The 6 checks below help you avoid these patterns before you sign.
- Get a written price per ounce and the dealer's buyback bid on the same day. Common 1 oz coins cost 3% to 16% over spot at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026. A higher premium, or any fractional coin, needs a written reason. Ask how the rep is paid: Goldline's account agreement (version 20220601) says commissions are "usually greatest on products with a higher spread."
- Refuse fractional, "exclusive", "premium", "limited mintage" or "semi-numismatic" silver. The CFTC calls semi-numismatic "a made-up industry term," and these labels drive numismatic coin upsells.
- Read the contract for the highest spread it allows, and assume you will pay all of it.
- Ask the custodian in writing whether it accepts the exact product and where it will store it. Within 28 days, the custodian's statement, not the dealer's, should list every item on your invoice. The CFTC uses 28 days as its test of actual delivery (advisory 8215-20).
- Refuse pitches built on "IRS-approved" silver, "move everything", "free silver", "guaranteed buyback" or "keep it at home". The CFTC lists "Putting all your retirement savings in precious metals is safe and secure" as a lie (Precious Metals IRA Lies vs Facts, 2024). Contracts at American Hartford Gold, Lear Capital, Preserve Gold, Goldline and American Bullion say the law bars them from guaranteeing a buyback.
- Check the company with regulators and courts before you sign, following how to check a gold IRA company.
You can report a problem to the CFTC tip line at 866-366-2382 or to your state securities regulator. The 11 warning signs in gold IRA scams apply to silver sellers too. Sellers are ranked on published criteria in best silver IRA companies, and no company can pay for its place.
Silver IRA vs Gold IRA, Silver ETFs and Silver You Keep Yourself#
A silver IRA is one of 4 common ways to own silver for retirement, and the costliest to trade. On $100,000 over 10 years it costs about $17,265, against $3,000 to $4,900 for a silver ETF.
Silver IRA vs gold IRA#
A gold IRA and a silver IRA follow identical rules, but silver returned less since 1971, swings over twice as hard and costs nearly 3 times as much to trade. One account can hold all four metals, so a gold IRA can own silver too. The table below compares the two metals.
| Measure | Silver | Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Yearly return, 1971-2025 (LBMA) | 7.1% | 9.0% |
| Yearly volatility, 1971-2025 | 66.3% | 27.1% |
| Fall from the January 29, 2026 record to September 28, 2026 (LBMA) | 48.2% | 23.3% |
| Same-day round trip, 1 oz Eagle (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026) | 14.6% | 5.39% |
| Weight of $100,000 (spot, September 29, 2026) | 111.8 lb | 1.65 lb |
How much of each to hold is weighed in gold vs silver IRA.
Silver IRA vs a silver ETF in the IRA you already have#
A silver ETF in the IRA you already have costs far less than a silver IRA: about $3,000 to $4,900 against about $17,265 on $100,000 over 10 years. But you own fund shares, not coins. The table below shows the 10-year cost at a flat silver price.
| Option ($100,000, 10 years) | Yearly fee | 10-year cost |
|---|---|---|
| SIVR | 0.30% while a fee waiver runs to February 28, 2027; 0.45% stated | About $3,000 at the waived rate |
| SLV | 0.50% | About $4,900 |
| Silver IRA in 1 oz Silver Eagles | 14.6% round trip (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026) + $2,680 Equity Trust metals-only fees | About $17,265 |
Each SLV share held about 0.9035 oz of silver on September 28, 2026. PSLV, another silver fund, charges a 0.45% management fee, with total expenses (MER) of 0.56% for 2025. Every fund is compared in gold and silver ETFs for your IRA.
Outside an IRA, SLV and SIVR gains face the collectibles rate covered above; the same math for gold is in gold IRA vs gold ETF.
Silver IRA vs physical silver you keep yourself#
A silver IRA keeps money that is already in a 401(k) or IRA tax-deferred; to hold silver yourself, buy it outside the IRA with after-tax money. Outside an IRA you may hold any silver, including pre-1965 junk silver near melt. $10 of face value (for example, 40 pre-1965 quarters) cost $437.79, or $61.23 an ounce (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026). Gains face the collectibles rate. Money taken from a traditional IRA or 401(k) to buy coins is taxed as income first, and the full tax math is in gold IRA vs physical gold.
Can you buy silver in a Fidelity IRA?#
Yes: Fidelity sells 1 oz Silver Eagles and silver bars inside its own IRAs, so you may not need a separate silver IRA. The metal is held at FideliTrade in Delaware, and its fees are shown below.
| Fidelity fee (schedule read September 29, 2026) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Buy commission | 2.90% under $10,000 to 0.99% at $100,000 or more |
| Sell commission | 2.00% to 0.75% |
| Minimum commission | $44 per trade |
| Storage | 0.125% a quarter (0.50% a year), minimum $3.75 |
| IRA minimum purchase | $1,000 |
| Dealer spread | Not published |
Ask for the all-in price per ounce, since the spread is not published. Fees are compared in more detail on buying gold and silver bullion in a Fidelity IRA.
Platinum and palladium IRAs#
The same IRA can hold platinum and palladium under the same rules, but both must be at least .9995 fine, and only platinum has a coin the law names. The table below compares the two metals.
| Metal | Minimum fineness | Named US coin | LBMA price, September 28, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platinum | .9995 | Platinum Eagle, including proofs | $1,731.85 |
| Palladium | .9995 | None; the Palladium Eagle counts only as bullion | $1,219.25 |
Palladium costs the most to trade: a Palladium Maple Leaf lost 31.8% in a same-day round trip (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026). Each metal has its own guide: platinum IRA and palladium IRA.
Silver IRA frequently asked questions#
These 7 answers cover the questions readers ask after the basics.
Does the IRS know if you buy silver?#
Yes, for silver in an IRA: your custodian reports the account's year-end value on Form 5498 every year and every withdrawal on Form 1099-R. Outside an IRA, a dealer files Form 1099-B only for some sales at or above a futures contract's size. A single coin is not reported. Cash payments over $10,000 trigger Form 8300, a cash report to the IRS, as explained in does the IRS know about your gold.
Does industrial demand make silver a better IRA holding?#
Not by itself: industry used 657.4 million ounces in 2025, 58.1% of demand, yet silver still fell 53.3% from January to July 2026. Demand beat supply by 40.3 million ounces in 2025 (Silver Institute, World Silver Survey 2026). A 2026 shortfall of 46.3 million ounces is a Metals Focus forecast, not a fact. Silver's place on the US Geological Survey's 2025 critical minerals list (November 7, 2025) has no IRA effect. More on industrial silver demand.
Can you swap gold for silver inside an IRA?#
Yes, the IRA can swap gold for silver with no tax, but a swap out and back keeps only about 80% of your value at a low-cost dealer. So the gold-to-silver ratio, how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys, must move about 20% just to break even. At an unchanged ratio, $100,000 of gold swapped into silver and back leaves about $80,150 (SafeOunce computation, SD Bullion prices). The history is in gold-to-silver ratio.
Can you cancel a silver IRA after you sign?#
Yes: you have at least 7 days to revoke the IRA itself for a full refund, but the dealer's silver order has its own, usually shorter, terms. The refund is "the entire amount ... without adjustment for such items as sales commissions" (26 CFR 1.408-6). In plain English, you get back every dollar you put in. Dealer terms vary: Lear Capital allows 24 hours after the invoice, and American Hartford Gold 7 days for non-bullion only (company terms, September 2026). The steps, always in writing, are in cancel a gold IRA.
What happens if the depository holding your silver fails?#
Owners can lose metal and wait years: at First State Depository, the best-known US vault failure, 2,102 accounts were hit, 90% of them IRAs. The receiver, a manager the court put in charge, estimated $56.8 million to $110.4 million of metal missing. A court-run payout to owners finished on November 30, 2023.
