A palladium IRA is a retirement account that owns palladium bars or coins at least 99.95% pure, held for you by its custodian in a vault, never at home. An IRA (individual retirement account) is a savings account with tax breaks, and the custodian is the trust company that holds it. Palladium qualifies only as bullion: bars and coins valued for their metal, at least .9995 fine, which is the metal trade's way of writing 99.95%.
Gold, silver and platinum each have a US coin named in the tax code. Palladium has none, so the law allows it only as bullion. So which products qualify, and what does palladium cost to buy and sell inside an IRA?
This guide covers the legal route, 3 product types, 8 IRS rules and moving money in from a 401(k) or IRA. It then shows what $50,000 costs over 10 years, 6 downsides, who palladium may suit and how to check an offer.
The table below sums up a palladium IRA in 10 facts as of September 29, 2026.
| Item | 2026 value and source |
|---|---|
| Legal route | Bullion only, under 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B); the tax code names no palladium coin |
| Minimum purity | .9995 (99.95%), the purity NYMEX, a US commodity exchange, has required for palladium since October 1992 (archived NYMEX specifications) |
| Products custodians name | .9995 bars from approved makers (accredited refiners); the Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf |
| American Palladium Eagle | .9995, so it passes the purity test, but no custodian list we read names it: ask in writing |
| Who holds it | The custodian, in a depository (a secure vault). IRA metal kept at home counts as a taxable withdrawal (McNulty v. Commissioner, a 2021 Tax Court case) |
| 2026 contribution limit | $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older, shared with all your IRAs (IRS Notice 2025-67) |
| Price | LBMA palladium price (PM), the afternoon price set in London under the London Bullion Market Association: $1,219.25 on September 28, 2026, down 26.6% in 2026 to that date |
| Dealer round trip, 1 oz (one troy ounce, 31.1 grams) | What you lose buying and selling back the same day: 21.6% on a bar, 31.8% on a Maple Leaf (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026) |
| Yearly account fees | $215 to $325 on three custodians' published 2026 fee lists ($215 to $265 with shared, or "commingled", storage) |
| Required minimum distributions (RMDs) | The yearly amount you must withdraw from a traditional IRA, from age 73; 75 if born in 1960 or later |
What Is a Palladium IRA?#
A palladium IRA is an IRA whose custodian buys palladium bullion at least .9995 fine and keeps it in a depository, a secure vault for IRA metal. The tax code allows this under 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B). The account is a normal IRA: traditional (taxed when you withdraw), Roth (qualified withdrawals tax-free), SEP or SIMPLE.
A palladium IRA is one kind of precious metals IRA: the same account can also hold gold, silver and platinum. If the tax code treats most metal as a forbidden collectible, why is palladium allowed at all?
The tax code calls most coins, art, gems and metals "collectibles" (408(m)(1)). If your IRA buys one, you owe tax on its price. A 1997 exception covers the bullion of four metals, palladium among them.
Is palladium allowed in an IRA?#
Yes: palladium is allowed in an IRA, but only as bullion at least 99.95% pure that your custodian holds. The IRS names no palladium coin and keeps no list of approved palladium products.
The IRS Retirement Plan Investments FAQs say "there is no list of approved investments for retirement plans." The only IRS list is of nonbank trustees, firms allowed to hold IRAs although they are not banks. On April 1, 2026 it had 73, including one metals business, Lone Star Tangible Assets, LP.
How long has palladium been allowed in IRAs?#
Palladium bullion has been allowed in IRAs since the 1998 tax year, under the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. That law opened IRAs to trustee-held bullion of four metals for tax years beginning after December 31, 1997. The table below shows the 4 laws that shaped palladium's place.
| Year | Law | What changed for palladium |
|---|---|---|
| 1981 | Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 (Pub. L. 97-34) | Collectibles, including metal, bought by an IRA after December 31, 1981 treated as a taxable distribution of their cost |
| 1986 | Tax Reform Act of 1986 (Pub. L. 99-514) | American Gold and Silver Eagles allowed for purchases after December 31, 1986; no palladium |
| 1997 | Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (Pub. L. 105-34, sec. 304) | Gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion allowed for tax years beginning after December 31, 1997 |
| 2010 | Pub. L. 111-303 | American Palladium Eagle authorized as a US coin, but not added to the IRA coin list |
The Senate wrote the 1997 bullion rule; the House bill had "No provision" on metal. Our history of the 1997 bullion rule quotes each law.
The first bullion Palladium Eagles came in 2017. Congress has not added the coin to the tax code's list of named coins (408(m)(3)(A)).
How does a palladium IRA work? 5 steps#
A palladium IRA works like a gold IRA in 5 steps: open it, check the product list, fund it, buy into a vault, then hold, sell or withdraw.
A self-directed IRA lets you buy assets the big brokers do not offer, such as metal bars. Every palladium IRA is a self-directed IRA at a custodian that allows metal. The 5 steps are listed below.
- Open a self-directed IRA with a metals custodian. Setup costs $50 at Equity Trust and GoldStar Trust (2026 fee schedules).
- Get the custodian's written palladium product list. The custodian, not the law, decides which .9995 products it takes.
- Move money in. From another IRA, ask for a transfer: no 60-day deadline, no once-a-year limit and no tax withheld. The same IRA to gold IRA transfer rules apply to palladium. From a former employer's 401(k), ask for a direct rollover; a check paid to you has 20% withheld. New contributions must be cash.
- Let the custodian pay the dealer, who ships to the depository. The custodian does not check the dealer or the price for you (Securities and Exchange Commission, Initial Decision No. 1030, 2016).
- Hold, sell or take the metal out. A sale inside the IRA is not taxed. From a traditional IRA, bars taken out "in kind" (the metal instead of cash) are taxed at their value that day.
Which Palladium Coins and Bars Are IRA-Eligible? 3 Product Types Checked#
Three palladium products can qualify, all .9995 pure: bars from an accredited refiner, the Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf and the American Palladium Eagle. An accredited refiner is a maker approved by an exchange or market body, such as NYMEX or the London markets (LBMA, LPPM), or a national mint itself.
Why treat the Eagle differently? The tax code has two routes into an IRA. Route A is named US coins, such as the Gold, Silver and Platinum Eagles, with no purity test. Route B is bullion at exchange purity held by the trustee. Palladium uses only Route B, so each custodian decides which .9995 products it takes.
The table below checks 7 products. The premium is what you pay above spot, the market price of one troy ounce. A proof is a collector finish, "W" marks the West Point Mint, and a graded (slabbed) coin is sealed in a holder with a grade, such as PF70.
| Product | Purity | Route | Named by GoldStar, STRATA or Equity Trust? | SD Bullion ask and premium over spot (spot $1,245.43, JM Bullion, September 29, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz palladium bar, accredited refiner (IRA-eligible palladium coins and bars) | .9995 | B | GoldStar: "various bars .9995"; Equity Trust: bars .9995+ | $1,404.72; 12.8% |
| 10 oz palladium bar, accredited refiner | .9995 | B | Same as 1 oz bars | $14,447.15; 16.0% |
| Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf, 1 oz | .9995 | B | GoldStar and STRATA name it | $1,644.72; 32.1% |
| American Palladium Eagle, bullion | .9995 | B only | None of the three; ask in writing | Not in stock at SD Bullion; $2,394.49, 71.7% over spot, at JM Bullion on August 5, 2026 |
| American Palladium Eagle, W-mint proof, reverse proof or uncirculated | .9995 | B (passes on purity); each custodian decides | None of the three; where custodians accept proofs, they ask for original packaging and certificate | 2025-W reverse proof PF70: $3,264.72; 162.1% |
| Graded or slabbed palladium coins | Any | No | Refused: GoldStar "unacceptable"; Equity Trust "not acceptable in IRAs at this time" | n/a |
| Rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, osmium | Any | No route | Not eligible in any form | n/a |
Prices move daily; ask for a written per-ounce price and the dealer's bid on the same day.
The PF70 proof is sold graded, and GoldStar and Equity Trust refuse graded coins.
Every metal must pass two tests, purity and custody. See which gold, silver, platinum and palladium the tax code allows in one list.
Why is the American Palladium Eagle not a named IRA coin?#
The American Palladium Eagle is not a named IRA coin because 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(A) lists only gold, silver and platinum US coins. A named coin needs no purity test, which is why the .9167 Gold Eagle qualifies; the Palladium Eagle gets no such pass.
Section 5112(k) covers "platinum bullion coins and proof platinum coins", so proof Platinum Eagles are named and proof Palladium Eagles are not. Section 5112(v)(4) calls palladium coins "numismatic items" (collector pieces), a Mint sales label, not a tax status.
One dealer's page (updated July 23, 2026) claims a 5112 "carve-out" (special exception) for proof Palladium Eagles. There is none: section 5112 tells the Mint what to make, not how IRAs are taxed.
According to published mintage tables, about 23,700 bullion Palladium Eagles were struck: 15,000 in 2017 and 8,700 in 2021.
At 71.7% over spot (JM Bullion, August 5, 2026), the bullion coin sits inside the CFTC's 40% to 200% range for collector coins (advisory 8215-20, 2020). Details are on American Palladium Eagle in an IRA.
Why must palladium be .9995 pure when gold needs only .995?#
Palladium must be .9995 pure because the IRA rule copies the purity each metal's US exchange demands, and NYMEX set 99.95% for palladium in 1992. Gold's standard at COMEX, another CME Group exchange, is .995 (COMEX Rule 113101). Fineness is purity as a decimal: .9995 means 99.95%.
Only the purity number carries into IRA law. The archived NYMEX contract traded 100-ounce lots with "no single piece weighing less than 10 ounces", yet 1 oz bars can go in an IRA. Large bars follow Good Delivery, the London standard: 1 to 6 kg (2.2 to 13.2 lb) at 99.95%.
The accredited-refiner rule is custodian policy, not law. One IRA administrator's page even says palladium must be "0.999 fineness or better" and "Minimum fineness 99.95%"; the correct minimum is .9995.
Which palladium products do custodians actually accept?#
Custodians name two palladium products as of September 2026: .9995 bars from an accredited refiner and the Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf. None of the three lists we read names the American Palladium Eagle.
Custodian policy can be stricter than the law. The table below quotes three metals IRA custodians, read September 29, 2026.
| Custodian | Exact palladium wording | Read |
|---|---|---|
| GoldStar Trust | "both platinum and palladium must be .9995 pure"; examples: "Canadian Maple Leaf coins; Various bars .9995" | September 29, 2026 |
| STRATA Trust | "Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins and more. Purity requirement : Minimum 99.95% pure." | September 29, 2026 |
| Equity Trust | Bars from makers accredited by "Nymex/Comex, LME, LBMA, LPPM, TOCOM, NYSE/Liffe/CBOT, and ISO-9000 or a national mint"; "Palladium .9995+" | September 29, 2026 |
The approved-maker wording differs between custodians and even between one custodian's pages. GoldStar's bar rule names only COMEX, NYMEX and ISO 9000 refiners, while its main list adds LBMA, LPPM and others, so name the refiner when you ask. Ask 3 things in writing before a dealer invoices you, as listed below.
- Name the exact product, size and maker.
- Ask whether it is on the current list, and get the answer by email or letter.
- Ask about the American Palladium Eagle directly if a seller offers it.
The Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf is the one coin two lists name: .9995 fine, 31.11 grams, 34 mm, C$50 face value (Royal Canadian Mint). Specs and custodian notes are on Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf in an IRA.
Can rhodium or other platinum-group metals go in an IRA?#
No: of the six platinum-group metals, only platinum and palladium can go in an IRA, so rhodium, iridium, ruthenium and osmium are collectibles in any form.
The bullion exception lists only "gold, silver, platinum, or palladium bullion" (408(m)(3)(B)), so a rhodium bar fails whatever its purity.
If your IRA buys one, you owe tax on its price (408(m)(1)), and a 10% additional tax may apply if you are under 59 1/2. Rhodium joins the gold Krugerrand among the coins and bars you cannot hold in an IRA.
What IRS Rules Apply to a Palladium IRA? 8 Rules for 2026#
A palladium IRA follows the same IRS rules as any IRA, plus 2 rules for metal: buy only .9995 palladium bullion, and let the custodian hold it.
Three terms first. A prohibited transaction is a deal between the IRA and you or close family. An RMD (required minimum distribution) is the yearly minimum you must withdraw from a traditional IRA, and an excise tax is a penalty tax. The table below lists the 8 rules for 2026.
| # | Rule | Citation | In plain English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Buy only .9995 palladium bullion (IRS collectibles rule) | 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(1) and (3)(B) | Anything else is a collectible; its cost counts as paid out to you and is taxed |
| 2 | The trustee holds the metal | 408(m)(3)(B), closing sentence ("flush text"); McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (2021) | Your custodian's depository keeps it; home storage is a taxable withdrawal |
| 3 | Contributions are cash only | 26 U.S.C. 408(a)(1); IRS Notice 2025-67 | $7,500 for 2026, $8,600 at 50 or older, from earned income (pay from work); 2027 limits not announced as of September 29, 2026 |
| 4 | Transfers are unlimited | IRS Publication 590-A | Money sent straight from one custodian to another is a transfer, not a rollover: no limit, no 60-day deadline, no tax withheld |
| 5 | One 60-day rollover a year (60-day rollover rule) | 26 U.S.C. 408(d)(3); Bobrow v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo. 2014-21; Announcement 2014-15; Estate of Caan, 161 T.C. No. 6 (2023) | If money or metal is paid to you, put it back into an IRA within 60 days; bars must go back as the same bars. One IRA-to-IRA 60-day rollover per 12 months, counting all your IRAs |
| 6 | No deals with yourself (IRA prohibited transactions) | 26 U.S.C. 4975; 408(e)(2) | No personal use and no selling your own palladium to the IRA. Break this rule and the whole IRA counts as withdrawn, at its value on January 1 of that year |
| 7 | Required minimum distributions (RMDs) | 26 U.S.C. 401(a)(9); 4974 | From 73, or 75 if born in 1960 or later. Miss one and you owe a 25% excise tax, or 10% if you fix it in time |
| 8 | 7-day right to cancel | Treas. Reg. 1.408-6 | You can revoke a new IRA for at least 7 days. You cancel with the custodian; the right does not come from the dealer |
Of these precious metals IRA rules, 2 to 8 are the same for every metal; only rule 1's purity test differs. Each rule is explained with examples in precious metals IRA rules.
Can you keep palladium IRA metal at home?#
No: palladium bullion stays IRA-eligible only while a trustee holds it, and the U.S. Tax Court ruled in 2021 that IRA metal kept at home is taxable. The case is McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10, filed November 18, 2021 (Docket 1377-19). Coins bought through an IRA LLC (a company the IRA owned) and kept at home counted as a taxable distribution (a withdrawal you owe tax on) of their cost.
Our home storage page covers the sales pitches for it and the full McNulty ruling.
Palladium you want at home must be bought outside an IRA, with after-tax money.
How are palladium IRA withdrawals and RMDs taxed?#
Withdrawals from a traditional palladium IRA, RMDs included, are taxed as ordinary income (your normal tax rate) whether you take cash or bars. Qualified Roth withdrawals (after 59 1/2, once the Roth is 5 years old) are tax-free. Before 59 1/2, a 10% additional tax may also apply.
Taking bars out is an in-kind distribution, taxed at fair market value (the metal's worth that day). The custodian reports it on Form 1099-R; forms and state rules are in how precious metals IRAs are taxed.
RMDs start at 73, or 75 if you were born in 1960 or later (73 for 1959 under proposed IRS regulations). The RMD is the IRA's value divided by an IRS life-expectancy divisor, 24.6 at age 75 (IRS Publication 590-B). The example below uses $50,000.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| RMD at 75: $50,000 / 24.6 | $2,033 |
| Palladium equal to that at $1,245.43 spot (JM Bullion, September 29, 2026) | About 1.6 oz |
| Fee to take bars out in kind | $125 per transaction at Equity Trust (FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726); $75 plus $10 and shipping at GoldStar Trust (GTC Rev. 01/2026) |
You can aggregate: add up the RMDs of all your traditional IRAs and take the total from any one. The palladium can stay put or come out one 1 oz bar at a time; see the RMD rules for precious metals.
The 28% collectibles rate and the 3.8% net investment income tax never apply inside an IRA (26 U.S.C. 1411(c)(5)), but they can once bars leave it. Bars taken out get a cost basis equal to their value that day. IRS Publication 590-B says so for a Roth; for a traditional IRA it is the common reading. A later sale taxes only the rise, as a collectible gain at up to 28% if held over a year (IRS Topic 409), plus 3.8% on high incomes.
Converting traditional IRA palladium to a Roth in kind is taxed on its value that day. Conversions made after 2017 cannot be undone, and GoldStar charges $100 each (GTC Rev. 01/2026). With 44.7% yearly swings, a fall after converting means tax paid on lost value; converting in parts spreads that risk.
How Much Does a Palladium IRA Cost?#
A palladium IRA costs $215 to $325 a year in account fees, but buying and selling back through a dealer costs more: 21.6% to 31.8% on 1 oz products. Those figures come from three custodians' published 2026 fee schedules (price lists) and SD Bullion's prices on September 29, 2026.
Precious metals IRA fees work the same for palladium as for gold: mostly flat dollar amounts, which weigh most on small accounts. Every layer is compared in precious metals IRA fees.
The 5 cost layers of a palladium IRA are listed below.
- Dealer premium: what you pay above spot when you buy.
- Round trip (or spread): the gap between the dealer's selling price (ask) and buying price (bid), lost if you buy and sell back the same day.
- Setup fee: $50; STRATA waives it online.
- Yearly custodian and storage fees: $215 to $325.
- Per-trade and exit fees: $0 to $75 per trade and $150 to $250 to close the account.
The table below compares three published schedules as of September 29, 2026. Commingled (or non-segregated) storage keeps your metal with other owners' identical products; segregated storage keeps your exact bars apart.
| Custodian (schedule) | Setup | Yearly fee + standard storage | Segregated storage, total a year | Per trade | Close account |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GoldStar Trust (GTC Rev. 01/2026) | $50 | $90 + $125 commingled = $215 | $225 minimum storage ($315 total), plus $1.80 per $1,000 of value above $125,000 | $0 | $150 |
| Equity Trust, metals only (FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726) | $50 | $125 + $110 non-segregated = $235 | $160 storage ($285 total) | $30 per sale | $250 |
| STRATA Trust (fee page, August 31, 2026) | $50, waived online | $150 + $115 commingled = $265 | $175 storage ($325 total); gold, platinum and palladium only | $75 ($40 + $35 handling) | $250 |
Fees as published on each schedule, read September 29, 2026. Palladium pays the same flat fees as gold.
Why do palladium markups and spreads cost the most?#
Palladium cost the most of the four IRA metals to trade because the dealer we checked sold it far above spot and bought it back well below. At SD Bullion on September 29, 2026, asks were 12.8% to 32.1% above spot and bids 10% to 12% below.
Our guide to markups and spreads explains how to read any written quote.
The table below compares round trips by product at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026.
| Product | Ask | Bid | Round trip | Rise to break even |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz palladium bar | $1,404.72 | $1,101.73 | 21.6% | 27.5% |
| Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf | $1,644.72 | $1,121.73 | 31.8% | 46.6% |
| 1 oz platinum bar | $1,800.69 (generic bar) | n/a | 8.1% | 8.8% |
| 1 oz American Gold Eagle | $4,280.53 | $4,049.93 | 5.39% | 5.7% |
A second dealer shows the effect of dealer and bar size.
| Product (Monex, August 12, 2026*) | Round trip | Rise to break even |
|---|---|---|
| 10 oz palladium bar | 5.83% | 6.19% |
| 1 oz palladium bar | 13.14% | 15.13% |
| Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf | 9.54% | 10.54% |
*Before Monex's buy and sell charges, which Monex does not publish, so its real cost is higher. Monex quotes coin prices for orders of 10 coins.
The dealer and bar size moved the round trip from about 6% to about 32%. The CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) puts bullion at 5% to 10% over spot (advisory 8215-20, August 4, 2020). The CFTC and FINRA's 2024 "10 Things" advisory says fraudulent dealers charged spreads of "more than 300 percent", while other dealers "may charge less than 20 percent". The 31.8% Maple Leaf round trip is above that 20% mark.
Our IRA break-even calculator turns any palladium quote into the rise you need.
What does $50,000 in a palladium IRA cost over 10 years?#
$50,000 in 1 oz palladium bars costs about $13,785 over 10 years if the price stays flat, and about $18,870 in Palladium Maple Leafs. Gold bullion coins on the same fee schedule cost about $5,880. Cost means what you would lose: the drop from the price paid to the dealer's buyback value, plus account fees.
| Purchase (September 29, 2026) | Paid | Cost after 1 year | 5 years | 10 years (% of paid) | Rise needed to break even after 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 35 x 1 oz palladium bars | $49,165.20 | $11,220 | $12,360 | $13,785 (28.0%) | 35.7% |
| 30 x Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf | $49,341.60 | $16,305 | $17,445 | $18,870 (38.2%) | 56.1% |
| $50,000 of 1 oz Gold Eagles (comparator) | $50,000 | $3,315 | $4,455 | $5,880 (11.8%) | 12.4% |
At SD Bullion's same-day bids, the 35 bars were worth $38,560.55 and the 30 Maple Leafs $33,651.90. That gap is most of the cost, and you take it on day one.
The math uses the 4 assumptions listed below.
- Fees: Equity Trust's metals-only schedule with segregated storage: $50 setup, $285 a year and $280 to exit ($30 per sale plus $250 to close).
- Price: palladium stays flat.
- Payment: fees come from outside the IRA.
- Sale: at the dealer's same-day bid; the gold row uses a 5.4% round trip.
Our fee calculator reruns this math with your own inputs, for any metal.
Why does your first palladium statement show less than you paid?#
Your first statement shows less than you paid because the custodian values palladium at the market price per ounce and leaves out the dealer's premium. On a Palladium Maple Leaf, that premium was 32.1% at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026.
Where is palladium IRA metal stored, and what does storage cost?#
Palladium IRA metal sits in a vault from your custodian's list, such as the Delaware Depository or Brink's, for about $100 to $225 a year in storage. Those rates come from four published schedules read September 29, 2026: the three above plus Entrust.
Most IRA depositories are private companies; the Texas Bullion Depository is a state agency. We compare the main IRA depositories and their insurance.
STRATA and Entrust's Delaware Depository option segregate "gold, platinum, palladium only", so palladium can be segregated there and silver cannot.
| Custodian | Commingled | Segregated | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoldStar Trust | $125 | $225 minimum, plus $1.80 per $1,000 above $125,000 | GTC Rev. 01/2026 |
| Equity Trust | $110 | $160 | FS-0004-05 Rev. 081726 |
| STRATA Trust | $115 | $175 | Segregated for gold, platinum and palladium only (fee page, August 31, 2026) |
| Entrust, Delaware Depository | $100 | $150 | Same metals limit; election form Rev. 3/7/2024 |
The yearly gap for segregated vs commingled storage is $50 to $100 at these four schedules. Read when segregated vs commingled storage is worth the extra fee.
The Delaware Depository carries $1 billion of all-risk insurance plus $100 million of contingent cover (its FAQ, read September 29, 2026). It pays metal value, not your premium, and excludes war, terrorism, cyber events and confiscation. FDIC and SIPC never cover IRA metal.
Palladium takes little space: at $1,245.43 spot (JM Bullion, September 29, 2026), $100,000 bought 80.3 oz, about 2.50 kg (5.5 lb), against 111.8 lb of silver. IRA storage fees change with each schedule revision, so check IRA storage fees for current ones.
What Are the Risks of a Palladium IRA? 6 Downsides in Numbers#
The 6 downsides of a palladium IRA are price swings, deep crashes, the round trip, thin product choice, no income and sales pressure. Palladium's yearly swings are about 2.5 times gold's, as the list below shows.
- Price swings. Volatility measures how much a price swings in a typical year. Palladium's was 44.7% from 1991 to 2025 (LBMA palladium price, PM), against 17.6% for gold and 17.2% for the S&P 500 (500 large US company stocks, with dividends). Palladium fell 36.0% in 2023 and 20.0% in 2024, rose 82.6% in 2025, then fell 26.6% in 2026 to September 28.
- Deep, slow crashes. A drawdown is a fall from a high. Palladium fell 86.4% from January 26, 2001 to April 16, 2003 ($1,090 to $148) and took 16.9 years to regain its high. It fell 71.7% from March 7, 2022 to August 5, 2024 ($3,015 to $852). $50,000 bought at that 2022 peak held about $20,220 of metal on September 28, 2026, 59.6% less, before dealer and IRA costs.
- The round trip. Same-day round trips cost 21.6% (1 oz bar) and 31.8% (Maple Leaf) at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026. Palladium must then rise 27.5% to 46.6% to break even.
- Thin product choice. The custodian lists we read name only .9995 bars and the Maple Leaf. The only US palladium coin, the Palladium Eagle, sold at 71.7% (bullion, August 5, 2026) to 162.1% (graded proof, September 29, 2026) over spot.
- No income. Palladium pays no interest or dividends, so all of your return comes from the price, minus fees.
- Sales pressure. Salespeople may call coins "semi-numismatic" (partly collectible). The CFTC calls that "a made-up industry term that really has no special meaning". Its 2024 list of IRA sales lies includes "Putting all your retirement savings in precious metals is safe and secure." The warning signs are listed in precious metals IRA scams.
How has palladium performed since 1991?#
Palladium returned 8.95% a year from 1991 to 2025 at LBMA prices, with far bigger swings than gold or stocks. That beat gold's 7.18% but trailed the S&P 500's 11.12% with dividends. Whether it is a good investment depends on when you buy and what you pay. The table below shows compound returns (the steady yearly rate that turns the start value into the end value), before dealer spreads and IRA fees.
| Window | Palladium | Gold | S&P 500 (dividends reinvested) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1991-2025 | 8.95% a year | 7.18% a year | 11.12% a year |
| 2001-2025 | 2.23% a year | 11.70% a year | 8.74% a year |
| 2006-2025 | 9.75% a year | 11.30% a year | 10.90% a year |
| 2016-2025 | 11.58% a year | 15.21% a year | 14.68% a year |
SafeOunce computation on LBMA year-end prices (PM) and Aswath Damodaran's S&P 500 data (NYU Stern). LBMA palladium prices start on April 2, 1990.
From 2001 to 2025, palladium returned only 2.23% a year. That window begins right after palladium's best year, 2000 (+115.3%), and its first year, 2001, was its worst (-54.0%). Palladium lost money in 14 of the 35 years from 1991 to 2025, against 11 for gold and 6 for the S&P 500.
$10,000 of palladium at the end of 2005 grew to about $47,250 by September 28, 2026 at LBMA prices, or 7.8% a year. Gold grew to about $80,790 (10.6% a year), both before IRA costs. The palladium rate is below the table's 9.75% because it includes the 26.6% fall in 2026.
Gold's and silver's crashes and how long recovery took are on our drawdowns page.
Who Might Hold Palladium in an IRA, and Who Should Not?#
Palladium can fit a small, long-term slice of an existing metals IRA, but it costs too much for small balances or money needed within 5 years. Small here means under about $25,000: a SafeOunce rule of thumb based on the costs above, not a published figure. Flat fees explain it: $285 a year (Equity Trust, segregated, 2026) is 2.85% of $10,000, 1.14% of $25,000, 0.57% of $50,000 and 0.29% of $100,000.
The table below matches 6 reader situations to what the numbers say.
| If you... | What the numbers say | Where to read next |
|---|---|---|
| Already hold a gold or silver IRA and want a small palladium slice | Same account and fees. Buy .9995 bars and get the bid in writing: the round trip was 21.6% on 1 oz at SD Bullion (September 29, 2026) and 5.83% on 10 oz at Monex (August 12, 2026, before its charges) | The cost section above |
| Have under about $25,000 for metals | Fixed fees of $215 to $325 a year plus a 21.6% to 31.8% round trip; a palladium ETF in an existing IRA charges 0.60% a year | The palladium ETF comparison below |
| Need the money within about 5 years | 9 of the 31 five-year periods from 1991 to 2025 (1991-1995, 1992-1996 and so on) lost money; the worst lost 73.0% | The performance section above |
| Are offered Palladium Eagles, proofs or "exclusive" palladium coins | 71.7% to 162.1% over spot (August and September 2026), and on no custodian list we read | The 7 questions below |
| Want to hold palladium yourself | Not possible in an IRA; buy outside with after-tax money, and gains after a year are taxed at up to 28% | The home storage section above |
| Want a fixed share, such as "10% in palladium" | No sourced allocation rule exists; palladium's volatility was 44.7% a year (1991-2025) | The allocation paragraph below |
No sourced rule says how much to hold in palladium. Allocation means the share of your savings in each asset. The 5% to 15% "rule of thumb" some sellers quote has no source SafeOunce could find. In palladium's own numbers, a 10% slice at 44.7% yearly swings moves about as much as a 25% gold slice at 17.6% (44.7 / 17.6 = 2.5; SafeOunce computation).
Gold has data: a 60/40 portfolio (60% stocks, 40% bonds) with 10% gold returned 9.7% a year from 1972 to 2025, a past result and not a rule. The research on how much to hold in an IRA covers gold, the best-studied metal; SafeOunce has no comparable study for palladium.
The table below ranks 5 ways to own palladium in an IRA, cheapest first.
| Rank | Way to own palladium | Cost figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Palladium ETF (PALL) in an IRA you already have | 0.60% a year; about $2,920 on $50,000 over 10 years at a flat price (trust shares, not bars) | PALL 10-K for fiscal 2025; SafeOunce computation |
| 2 | 10 oz bar, accredited refiner | 5.83% round trip before Monex's own charges (1 oz bar at Monex: 13.14%) | Monex, August 12, 2026 |
| 3 | 1 oz bar, accredited refiner | 21.6% round trip | SD Bullion, September 29, 2026 |
| 4 | Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf | 31.8% round trip | SD Bullion, September 29, 2026 |
| 5 | American Palladium Eagle | 71.7% (bullion) to 162.1% (graded proof) over spot, on no custodian list we read | JM Bullion, August 5, 2026; SD Bullion, September 29, 2026 |
Ranks 2 to 4 mix two dealers and dates; compare one dealer's ask and bid on the same day.
On these numbers, the 10 oz bar had the cheapest round trip, and the Palladium Eagle at collector prices is a cost problem before a legal one. Between a 1 oz bar and a Maple Leaf, the dealer decides: the Maple cost 10.2 points more at SD Bullion but 3.6 points less at Monex.
How Do You Check a Palladium IRA Company's Offer? 7 Questions#
Check a palladium IRA offer by getting the price and the dealer's bid in writing, getting the custodian's written approval of the product, and searching regulator records before you sign.
Palladium for IRAs is sold by the same gold IRA companies and dealers rated on our site. They are generally not fiduciaries, so they are not usually required to put your interest first. Ask the 7 questions below.
- Get the ask and the dealer's bid per ounce, in writing, on the same day. The gap is your round trip: 21.6% on a 1 oz bar at SD Bullion on September 29, 2026.
- Ask for the refiner and purity stamped on each bar. It must read .9995 and come from an accredited maker.
- Get the custodian's written yes for the exact product before the dealer invoices. This matters most for Palladium Eagles and proofs.
- Ask which custodian, fee schedule and depository you get. Ask for the schedule's revision date, the storage type and whether the custodian can sell your metal to pay unpaid fees. Equity Trust's disclosure (CA_F-0003-05 Rev. 121625) allows that, at palladium bids 10% to 12% below spot (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026).
- Read the cancellation terms, then your separate revocation right. Treas. Reg. 1.408-6 gives you at least 7 days to revoke (cancel) a new IRA with the custodian. The refund comes "without adjustment for such items as sales commissions, administrative expenses or fluctuation in market value". In plain English: nothing is taken off for commissions, fees or price drops.
- Search regulator and court records. Check the CFTC, the SEC and your state securities regulator for the seller's name.
- Refuse 5 pitches. Walk away from "IRS-approved", "numismatic" or "exclusive" palladium, from "no hidden fees", and from "keep it at home".
Two funding checks also apply. Plan 2 to 6 weeks from a brokerage IRA to the metal purchase. Metals custodians generally take cash by check or wire, not through ACATS, the brokers' transfer system. If you did a 60-day IRA rollover in the past 12 months, use a direct transfer: only one is allowed per 12 months across all your IRAs.
Past precious metals IRA enforcement actions show what these checks catch.
Palladium IRA vs Platinum, Gold, Silver and a Palladium ETF#
Of the four IRA metals, palladium had the highest round trips at SD Bullion in September 2026 and swung more than platinum or gold. A palladium ETF in an IRA you already have costs far less than bars. These IRA comparisons use the dated prices above; our IRA comparisons cover every head-to-head.
Platinum or palladium for an IRA?#
For an IRA, platinum is simpler than palladium: it has a named US coin, cheaper round trips and smaller price swings. A 1 oz platinum bar lost 8.1% on a round trip, against 21.6% for a 1 oz palladium bar (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026).
| Attribute | Platinum | Palladium |
|---|---|---|
| Named US coin | American Platinum Eagle, bullion and proof (31 U.S.C. 5112(k)) | None |
| Minimum purity | .9995 | .9995 |
| 1 oz bar round trip (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026) | 8.1% | 21.6% |
| Yearly swings (volatility), 1991-2025 | 31.6% | 44.7% |
| Return, 1991-2025 | 4.88% a year | 8.95% a year |
| LBMA PM price, September 28, 2026 | $1,731.85 | $1,219.25 |
Palladium returned more than platinum from 1991 to 2025, but with bigger swings and higher trading costs. A platinum IRA uses the same account and fees; see our platinum IRA guide.
Palladium IRA vs a palladium ETF in the IRA you already have#
A palladium ETF in the IRA you already have costs far less: about $2,920 against $13,785 on $50,000 over 10 years at a flat price. But you own trust shares, not bars. The abrdn Physical Palladium Shares ETF (PALL) is a grantor trust, taxed as if shareholders owned its metal, which its custodian, ICBC Standard Bank Plc, holds in London or Zurich. Its expense ratio (yearly fee) is 0.60% (10-K for fiscal 2025).
| $50,000, 10 years, flat price | Cost | What you own |
|---|---|---|
| PALL in an existing IRA (0.60% a year) | About $2,920: $50,000 x (1 - 0.994^10) | Trust shares |
| Palladium IRA, 1 oz bars (Equity Trust schedule, SD Bullion prices) | About $13,785 | .9995 bars in a vault |
The ETF cost excludes brokerage commissions and the fund's trading spread.
The IRS has treated shares of a gold trust as not a collectible (private letter ruling 200732026, an answer to one taxpayer), and palladium trusts have the same structure. Outside an IRA, PALL gains after more than a year are taxed as collectibles at up to 28%. The gold math is in gold IRA vs gold ETF.
Palladium vs gold and silver IRAs#
Gold and silver each have a named US coin and cheaper round trips than palladium (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026). A gold IRA and a palladium IRA share the same account rules, and the gold IRA guide covers gold's own products and costs.
| Metal | Minimum purity | Named US coin | 1 oz round trip (SD Bullion, September 29, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | .995 | American Gold Eagle (.9167, named) | 5.39% (Gold Eagle) |
| Silver | .999 | American Silver Eagle, 1 oz | 14.6% (Silver Eagle) |
| Palladium | .9995 | None | 21.6% (bar) to 31.8% (Maple Leaf) |
Named coins skip the purity test, which is why a .9167 Gold Eagle qualifies.
A silver IRA sits between gold and palladium on trading cost; see our silver IRA guide.
Palladium IRA frequently asked questions#
Eight short answers follow.
Can you hold palladium in a Roth IRA?#
Yes: a Roth IRA at a custodian that allows metal can hold .9995 palladium bullion, and qualified withdrawals, including bars taken out, are tax-free. A withdrawal is qualified after age 59 1/2 once the Roth is 5 years old (26 U.S.C. 408A). See how precious metals in a Roth IRA are taxed.
Can you move palladium you already own into an IRA?#
No: IRA contributions must be cash (26 U.S.C. 408(a)(1)), so palladium you own must be sold and the cash contributed within the yearly limit. Selling your own bars to the IRA is a prohibited transaction (26 U.S.C. 4975). The IRA contribution limits for 2026 are $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older.
Can you roll a 401(k) into a palladium IRA?#
Yes: a direct rollover, where your former employer's 401(k) plan sends the money straight to a self-directed IRA custodian, is not taxed. The IRA can then buy palladium bullion. A check paid to you has 20% withheld (26 U.S.C. 3405(c)). The paperwork matches a 401(k) to gold IRA rollover.
How much money do you need to start a palladium IRA?#
The IRS sets no minimum, but fixed fees of $215 to $325 a year and a 21.6% to 31.8% round trip on 1 oz products make small balances expensive. Company minimums are listed in how much money you need to start a gold IRA.
Are there palladium IRA companies?#
Yes, but not as a separate kind of company: gold IRA companies and bullion dealers sell palladium for IRAs, and a custodian, not the seller, holds the IRA. The 7 questions above apply to each of them.
What is the best precious metals IRA?#
No single precious metals IRA is best for everyone. SafeOunce ratings follow our published method, and no company can pay to change its rating or its place. See the ranking of best gold IRA companies.
How much will palladium be worth in 5 years?#
Nobody knows, and SafeOunce does not forecast prices. In the 31 calendar 5-year periods from 1991 to 2025, palladium lost money in 9. It fell 73.0% at worst (2001-2005) and rose 645.5% at best (1996-2000), at LBMA year-end prices (PM) before IRA costs.
What do spot price, premium and bid mean for palladium?#
Spot is the market price of one troy ounce of pure palladium, the premium is what you pay above spot, and the bid is what a dealer pays you back. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. Dealer spot was $1,245.43 (JM Bullion, September 29, 2026) and the LBMA palladium price (PM) $1,219.25 on September 28, 2026: two different price feeds. The precious metals IRA glossary explains 60 terms.
