Birch Gold Group lets you open a gold IRA with $5,000 and Noble Gold Investments asks for $20,000, as of November 2026. Their yearly account fees sit close together, from about $235 to $285. So what separates them for your money?

A gold IRA is a retirement account that holds physical metal through a custodian, the trust company that keeps the account for you. The largest cost at both companies is one neither publishes: the markup, the amount the dealer adds above its own cost for the coins. Birch Gold and Noble Gold are two of the gold IRA companies SafeOunce checks with the same records, fees and contract questions.

Both firms are dealers, not custodians: they sell the coins, while a custodian and a vault hold them. Birch Gold Group is the trade name of Birch Gold Group, LP of Des Moines, Iowa. Noble Gold Investments is the trade name of Golden Bull, LLC of Encino, California.

The five key numbers are listed below. BBB stands for Better Business Bureau.

  • Minimum: $5,000 at Birch Gold vs $20,000 for an IRA at Noble Gold (Birch FAQ of Oct. 9, 2026; Noble page re-read Nov. 6, 2026).
  • Yearly account fees: about $235 at Birch Gold vs $275 or $285 at Noble Gold, on two Noble pages (re-read Nov. 6, 2026).
  • First-year fees: paid by Birch above $50,000 vs no waiver on either Noble fee page (as of Nov. 6, 2026).
  • Coin markup published: no at Birch Gold, no at Noble Gold (as of Nov. 6, 2026).
  • BBB complaints closed in three years: 9 for Birch Gold vs 3 for Noble Gold (as of Oct. 2, 2026).

Birch Gold vs Noble Gold at a Glance: 16 Facts Side by Side#

The table compares the same 16 facts for Birch Gold Group and Noble Gold Investments, each with the date we checked it.

The depository is the vault that stores IRA metal. Segregated storage keeps your coins apart from other people's, and commingled (shared) storage pools them with coins of the same type. BBB accreditation is a paid membership, not an award.

Table T1: Birch Gold vs Noble Gold: 16 facts, checked October 2 to November 6, 2026. The legal-name and address rows identify the companies and are not counted in the 16.

Where a cell says "not published", the company's website shows nothing on it. SafeOunce asked both companies for their purchase agreements on October 1, 2026 (requested, not yet received). Our Birch Gold Group review covers the company alone.

The Noble Gold Investments review does the same for Noble Gold Investments, with both of its fee pages.

How Do Birch Gold and Noble Gold Fees Compare?#

Birch Gold lists about $235 a year in account fees and Noble Gold lists $275 or $285, but those fees are the smaller part of what either gold IRA costs. Account fees are flat yearly bills from the custodian and the vault. The markup is a share of every dollar you spend on metal.

One point of spread (one cent of each dollar you pay that is not metal) on a $100,000 order costs $1,000 on day one. That is more than three years of either Noble fee figure. Our guide to gold IRA fees lists every cost layer, from setup to exit.

Account fees: about $235 a year at Birch vs $275 or $285 at Noble#

Birch Gold says its yearly custodian and storage fees average around $235, while Noble Gold's two fee pages say $275 and $285 a year (re-read November 6, 2026). Birch's FAQ (October 9, 2026) splits its figure into $125 for the custodian and $110 for shared storage. A flat fee is the same dollar amount at any account size. The table sets both companies' fee lines next to Equity Trust's metals-only schedule.

Fee line Birch, shared storage Birch, segregated (Equity Trust schedule, if it applies) Noble support page Noble gold IRA page Equity Trust metals-only schedule
Setup $50 $50 $80 $50 $50
Wire $30 $30 Not listed $30 $30
Yearly account fee $125 $125 $125 $125 $125
Yearly storage $110 shared $160 segregated $150 segregated $160 segregated $110 shared or $160 segregated
Yearly total $235 $285 $275 $285 $235 or $285
Account closure Not in Birch's figures ($250 at Equity Trust) Same Not listed $250 $250
In-kind distribution $125 at Equity Trust Same Not listed $75 $125

Table T2: Birch figures from its FAQ (October 9, 2026) and prices page; the segregated Birch column uses Equity Trust's metals-only schedule (FS-0004-05, revision 081726), if it applies to your account; Noble pages re-read November 6, 2026.

Compared on the same storage, the two cost about the same. Segregated storage on Equity Trust's schedule comes to $285 a year, exactly Noble's gold IRA page figure and $10 above its support page. Birch's lower $235 buys shared storage, which Noble does not offer. Noble's support page says: "We do not recommend commingled storage."

Noble's two pages disagree, and which one applies is not yet established. The gold IRA page matches Equity Trust's metals-only schedule on 5 of 6 lines: setup, yearly fee, segregated storage, closure and wire. Only the in-kind fee differs ($75 vs $125), and the support page's $80 and $150 match no Equity Trust schedule we have read. The support page also says "some companies advertise an annual fee of $160 ... but that typically refers to commingled storage". On Equity Trust's schedule and on Noble's own gold IRA page, $160 is the segregated rate. Which schedule applies is explained on our page about Equity Trust precious metals IRA fees.

Birch's prices page says its example uses "a custom fee schedule from Equity Trust". At GoldStar, Birch's other usual custodian, the schedule (revision 01/2026) comes to $215 a year shared ($90 + $125) or $315 segregated.

What do Birch Gold and Noble Gold fees cost over 10 years?#

On a $100,000 account, Birch's account fees total $2,115 over ten years with shared storage, against $2,830 or $2,900 at Noble, because Birch pays the first year. Year one adds the setup fee and any wire; later years carry only the yearly fees.

Account Option Year 1 10 years
$20,000 Birch, shared storage $315 $2,430
$20,000 Birch, segregated (Equity Trust schedule) $365 $2,930
$20,000 Noble, support page $355 $2,830
$20,000 Noble, gold IRA page $335 $2,900 ($2,930 with the $30 wire)
$100,000 Birch, shared storage $0 $2,115
$100,000 Birch, segregated (Equity Trust schedule) $0 $2,565
$100,000 Noble, support page $355 $2,830
$100,000 Noble, gold IRA page $335 $2,900

Table T3: 10-year account fees, SafeOunce computation from the company pages and Equity Trust's schedule, November 6, 2026. Illustration, not a quote.

On $100,000, the 10-year gap runs from $265 (Birch segregated vs Noble's support page) to $785 (Birch shared vs Noble's gold IRA page). That equals 0.27 to 0.79 points of spread on the same $100,000.

Run your own amount in the gold IRA fee calculator, which adds the markup.

Birch's first-year waiver and free-metals offer vs Noble's free coin banner#

Birch Gold pays the first year's fees on accounts over $50,000, worth at most $315 with shared storage, while neither of Noble's fee pages mentions a waiver. Birch's FAQ (updated October 9, 2026) says: "Birch Gold covers the first year's fees for accounts over $50,000." Its prices page words it two other ways: "if your initial purchase is $50,000 or more" and "for transfers over $50,000".

In plain English: an account of exactly $50,000 pays $0 under one wording and $315 under the other. Ask which one applies before you split or top up a transfer. The waiver is worth $315, which is 0.63% of $50,000 and 0.315% of $100,000 ($365 with segregated storage). One point of spread on $50,000 is $500, so the free year is worth less than one point of spread. What other no-fee gold IRA offers are worth is computed on our fee-waiver page.

Birch also runs a free-metals offer, often called bonus metal: extra coins added to a large order. Its terms page (read October 2, 2026) says "The metals purchased must be of eligible types", without naming the types. The four tiers are listed below.

Purchase Free metals Share of the purchase
$50,000 to $99,999.99 $500 1.0% at $50,000
$100,000 or more $1,000 1.0% at $100,000
$250,000 or more $2,500 1.0% at $250,000
$1,000,000 or more $10,000 1.0% at $1,000,000

Birch free-metals terms, read October 2, 2026. The bonus is at most 1% of the purchase.

Noble offers no IRA fee waiver on either fee page, though two third-party pages say it does. Its depository guide shows a banner, "Get A Free Gold Coin When You Open A Gold IRA Account", with no terms (September 29, 2026). Our page on free silver and bonus metal gold IRA promotions explains who pays for the bonus.

The markup: the cost neither company publishes#

Neither Birch Gold nor Noble Gold publishes its coin prices or markup, and the markup is the largest cost in either gold IRA. Birch's prices page says "we do not quote product prices online". Birch's fees blog (July 23, 2026) adds: "Like any precious metals dealer, we charge a premium over the spot price." Noble's support page says "We offer a flat fee structure when you acquire the metals from us", with no number.

The spot price is today's market price for one ounce of raw metal. The bid is what a dealer pays you when you sell back. The table shows what a $100,000 order is worth if sold the same day, at four spreads.

Spread Same-day sale value of $100,000 Gold rise needed to break even
5% $90,547 10.4%
10% $85,781 16.6%
20% $76,250 31.1%
30% $66,719 49.9%

Table T4: Illustration using the industry buyback template (bid 4.69% below the dealer's cost; Lear Capital terms, December 2025, and Preserve Gold agreement, June 2025). Not a quote from either company.

A 20% spread costs $23,750 on day one, more than eight times ten years of either company's account fees. Noble's homepage says "Lowest fees in the industry" (September 29, 2026), but with no markup published, nobody can check that claim. Our explainer on gold IRA markups and spreads shows how to get the number in writing.

How big is a normal spread? The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) says legitimate dealer spreads are often under 20%, while fraud cases run over 300% ("10 Things", 2024). Only 4 of the 15 operating sellers SafeOunce tracks publish a spread range, as of October 2, 2026, and neither Birch nor Noble is one of them.

What you buy also moves the markup. Plain 1-ounce bullion coins and bars, priced mainly on metal content, usually carry the smallest premium, while proof, fractional and collector coins carry more. The two IRA product lists differ sharply, as the table shows (read October 2, 2026).

IRA product list Birch Gold ("IRA Eligible Precious Metals" page) Noble Gold (gold and silver IRA pages, "Ira-Approved")
Products listed 45 12
Plain bullion 17 (16 standard lines with a 1 oz coin or bar, such as the Gold Eagle and Maple Leaf, plus the 5 oz America the Beautiful) 10 (such as the Gold Eagle, Philharmonic, Kangaroo, Silver Eagle and a 100 oz silver bar)
Proof coins 6 0
Fractional, odd-weight or exclusive 22 (such as the 1/4 oz Gold Florin, Rose Crown Guineas, Twin Maples and the Valcambi CombiBar) 0
Collector coins 0 2 (1854 Kellogg $20; Morgan dollars graded NGC MS68)
Share that is not plain bullion 28 of 45 (62%) 2 of 12 (17%)

Table T4b: IRA product lists, SafeOunce count from each company's pages, October 2, 2026. This share is the "F2 Catalog mix" item in Table T11.

Florins, named in a Birch BBB complaint below, are on Birch's IRA list, and metals bought under Birch's free-metals offer must be "of eligible types". In plain English: ask either company for the 1-ounce bullion coin or bar of each metal, and its percent over spot.

How much must gold rise to cover the markup?#

At a 20% spread, gold must rise about 31% before a same-day sale gets your money back; at 30%, about 50%. The math uses the industry buyback template, where the dealer's bid sits 4.69% below its own cost.

In words: multiply (1 minus the spread) by 0.953, divide 1 by the result, then subtract 1. The answer says nothing about when, or whether, gold rises that much.

Test your own markup in the gold IRA break-even calculator.

Minimum Investment: $5,000 at Birch Gold vs $20,000 at Noble Gold#

Birch Gold requires at least $5,000 to open a gold IRA and Noble Gold requires $20,000, as of November 2026. Birch's FAQ (updated October 9, 2026) says "Birch Gold Group currently requires a minimum investment of $5,000". It adds, "though this amount can vary depending on market conditions and product availability". Noble's gold IRA page (re-read November 6, 2026) says "Our Gold IRA minimum investment is $20,000", and its cash-purchase minimum is $10,000.

The IRS sets no minimum. The 2026 IRA contribution limit is $7,500, plus $1,100 at age 50 or older (IRS Notice 2025-67). So a $5,000 Birch account can start from one year's contribution, while Noble accounts usually start with a transfer or rollover. We list the gold IRA minimum investment for every company we track.

Review pages disagree on both minimums, as the table shows.

Noble's non-IRA Royal Survival Packs start at $5,000 (September 29, 2026), which is likely where the "$5,000" figures come from (our inference).

What the minimum means for fee drag#

At Birch's $5,000 minimum, $235 a year takes 4.7% of the account every year, and at Noble's $20,000 minimum its fees take 1.375% to 1.425%. Fee drag is the share of your account the yearly fees take. Flat fees weigh most on small accounts, as the table shows.

Account Birch yearly fees as a share Noble yearly fees as a share
$5,000 4.7% ($315 in year 1 = 6.3%) Not allowed (below the $20,000 minimum)
$20,000 1.175% 1.375% to 1.425%
$50,000 0.47% 0.55% to 0.57%

Less than $20,000? What each company allows, and when a gold ETF costs less#

Below $20,000 only Birch Gold opens a gold IRA, and on $20,000 a low-cost gold ETF in an existing IRA costs about $20 a year, against Birch's $235. A gold ETF is a fund that tracks the gold price and trades like a stock. The costs are set out in gold IRA vs gold ETF.

An expense ratio is the yearly fee a fund charges as a share of your money. GLDM charges 0.10% ($5 a year on $5,000; $20 on $20,000), and GLD charges 0.40% (September 29, 2026). Birch charges $235 a year at either amount.

Low-cost routes are on best gold IRA companies for small investors.

Buyback and Cancellation: What Each Company Puts in Writing#

Birch Gold publishes a refund rule and an arbitration clause but no buyback terms, while Noble Gold calls its buyback "guaranteed" and publishes no refund, cancellation or arbitration terms for metal purchases. Disputes are decided on the signed documents, not the sales call. Both companies have told the BBB that pricing is in the agreement each customer signs.

Buyback wording: "we do not make any money when we buy back" vs "guaranteed buyback program"#

Birch Gold says it welcomes buybacks and earns nothing on them, and Noble Gold calls its buyback "guaranteed", but neither publishes a buyback price formula, payment time or fee. A buyback is the dealer buying your coins back; inside an IRA this sale is called a liquidation. The six statements are listed in the table.

Table T5: Buyback wording at Birch Gold and Noble Gold, quoted from each company's own pages.

Five rival contracts, from American Hartford Gold, Lear Capital, Preserve Gold, Goldline and American Bullion, say the law prohibits a dealer from guaranteeing to repurchase. How to sell gold in your IRA and what the bid means is explained step by step.

Noble's own Trustpilot reply (February 26, 2026) says buyback inquiries "are addressed in the order received". It prices them at the live bid spot rate "at the time of confirmation". One reviewer reports 27 days and seven contacts to get a sell-back quote (January to February 2026; the reviewer's claim). Birch publishes no wait-time data.

Other firms' wording is in gold IRA buyback programs compared.

Cancellation and returns: counterfeit-only refunds vs no published window#

Birch Gold refunds only counterfeit coins returned within 90 days, and Noble Gold publishes no cancellation window, so at both companies a purchase is hard to undo. Birch's risk disclosure allows no refund "other than counterfeit coins returned in their original holders within ninety (90) days of purchase". It also says: "Customer should be prepared to hold any item purchased for at least a three to five-year period, and preferably five to ten years." In plain English: once Birch ships genuine coins, you cannot send them back for a refund.

Noble's website terms have no cancellation window. They promise shipping "5-14 business days after receipt of good funds", meaning money that has cleared, and allow up to "45 business days". The clause even names another company: "Goldco shall make reasonable efforts ship metals within five to fourteen (5-14) business days".

For scale, Lear Capital and Preserve Gold give 24 hours to cancel. American Hartford Gold gives 7 days, for non-bullion orders only.

Revocation, the right to undo a new IRA, is separate: Treasury Regulation 1.408-6 gives you at least 7 days, but against the custodian, not the dealer. Our page on how to cancel a gold IRA separates the IRS right from the dealer's terms.

Contracts and disputes: confidential arbitration in Des Moines vs a blank arbitration clause#

Birch Gold's website terms send disputes to confidential arbitration in Des Moines with fees split 50/50, while Noble Gold's terms have none and its purchase agreement is not public. Arbitration is a private hearing instead of a court case. A class action is one lawsuit brought for many customers, and punitive damages are extra money meant to punish. An opt-out lets you refuse an arbitration clause by a deadline.

Birch's 50/50 fee split has a cap in some cases. JAMS Consumer Minimum Standard 7 says "the only fee required to be paid by the consumer is $250" where the standards apply, and JAMS decides whether a metals purchase counts. In plain English: if JAMS treats you as a consumer, your share at Birch is capped at $250; if not, you could owe half of the arbitrator's bill.

Noble's text-message terms pick the commercial rules of the American Arbitration Association (AAA). The AAA's consumer rules cap a consumer's fee at $225, but the clause does not choose them. Ask Noble in writing which rules and which city would apply to a dispute over a metals order. Its terms page also names "NOBLE GOLD, INC.", so ask which company signs your agreement.

Noble told the BBB (July 2025) that every client signs a Shipping and Transaction Agreement that "clearly outlines the average spread". That agreement is not on its website (requested October 1, 2026, not yet received). Our table of gold IRA company contracts compared shows the clauses at firms that do publish them.

Custodians and depositories: two custodians and five vaults vs Equity Trust and IDS#

Birch Gold names two custodians and five depositories and lets Roth customers choose any qualified custodian, while Noble Gold names Equity Trust and one vault company, International Depository Services. Birch's FAQ names "typically Equity Trust Company or GoldStar Trust Company". Its gold Roth IRA page (updated May 7, 2026) says "you have the flexibility to choose any other qualified custodian if you prefer". Its five vaults, all in the US, are listed in Table T1.

Noble's support page (re-read November 6, 2026) uses three names: "Equity Institutional" for gold, "New Direction IRA Services" for silver and "Equity Trust IRA" in its transfer section. Noble says it stores with International Depository Services only, in Dallas, New Castle, Delaware, and Mississauga, Ontario, in segregated storage. Locations and insurance for International Depository Services (IDS) are on its profile.

Both companies use IDS. The COMEX futures exchange lists IDS of Delaware but not IDS of Texas (CME report, September 28, 2026), and that listing is not an IRS approval.

Birch's second custodian is profiled on GoldStar Trust, with its own fee schedule.

Noble cites an "all-risk policy underwritten by Lloyd's of London", but IDS publishes no insurance limit. FDIC and SIPC (bank and brokerage insurance) never cover IRA metal, and vault insurance pays the metal's value, not the premium you paid.

Noble also lists a vault in Mississauga, Ontario, and we found no IRS ruling on IRA gold stored outside the US. Ask for a US vault in writing. Whether IRA gold stored offshore is allowed is explained on our offshore storage page.

The three custody questions to ask either company are listed below.

  • Which custodian and fee schedule apply, with its revision date?
  • Which vault and city hold the metal, titled to my IRA?
  • Is storage segregated or shared, and at what yearly price?

Complaints, Lawsuits and Regulatory Records Compared#

Birch Gold has 9 BBB complaints in three years and Noble Gold 3 (October 2, 2026), and no regulator action was found for either. The only federal cases we found were brought by the companies themselves, and none is a customer lawsuit (searches of September 29 and October 2, 2026).

The Noble Gold complaints, lawsuits and BBB record page reads each complaint in full.

BBB and Trustpilot: 9 vs 3 complaints in three years#

Birch Gold's BBB profile shows 3.9 complaints per 100 reviews and Noble Gold's 1.2, as of October 2, 2026. Complaint density is complaints per 100 reviews. Trustpilot is a public review website that scores companies from 1 to 5.

Table T7: bbb.org and trustpilot.com, October 2, 2026.

The BBB uses two status words. "Resolved" means the customer confirmed the problem was solved. "Answered" means the company replied, but the customer did not accept the reply or did not tell the BBB. In the BBB's rating method, 90 of 100 points relate to complaints, and customer reviews are not used.

Complaint counts grow with sales volume, which neither company publishes. Trustpilot adds seven 3.5-star reviews to every score, and invited reviews raise five-star shares. Disputes sent to confidential arbitration never reach the BBB. Why star ratings barely separate these firms is covered in BBB, BCA and Trustpilot ratings.

What unhappy Birch Gold and Noble Gold customers report about prices#

Unhappy customers at both companies say they paid far more over the metal value than they expected, in 3 of Birch's BBB complaints and 1 of Noble's. A premium over spot is the extra you pay above the metal's market value.

Three Birch complaints filed in January and February 2026 allege high premiums. One customer asked about bullion and wrote that a representative "told me Florins were the right products for my portfolio"; a Florin is a coin Birch sells. Another alleged "a premium of up to ~90+%" while the agreement "states premiums between 5 to 45%". Birch replied to all three that the customers were not charged the premiums they claimed and that pricing is in the Transaction Agreement each customer signed. One reply says the customer "is being coached by a representative at a competing precious metals retailer".

Trustpilot's automated summary of Birch's reviews mentions "misleading pricing on specific alternative coin products" (October 2, 2026).

On July 23, 2025, a Noble customer described silver bought about 20% above spot and bought back about 20% below, "around 40%" in fees on $150,000. Noble replied on July 29, 2025 that it "does not charge a 40% fee, nor are fees hidden from clients". It said the agreement "clearly outlines the average spread", and its CEO called the customer; the BBB lists the complaint as answered. On Trustpilot, 4 of Noble's 13 low-star reviews are about price, and one reports 10% over spot on gold and "16%+" on silver (October 2023).

Lawsuits: Birch v. Bishop Gold, and Noble's cases against Elliott and Oxford Gold#

The three federal cases SafeOunce found for these two companies were all brought by them against other businesses, and none is a customer case. A docket is the court's list of filings in a case. The plaintiff is the side that sues, and the defendant is the side being sued.

Case Court and number Who sued whom, about what Filed Outcome

Table T8: Federal dockets on CourtListener and Justia; Bishop docket read November 6, 2026.

Birch's trademark case is pending as of November 6, 2026, per the CourtListener docket. The defendant is covered in our Bishop Gold Group review.

Federal searches found no customer lawsuit against either company (Birch on September 29, 2026; Noble on October 2, 2026). Birch's lawsuit page (July 2, 2026) says Birch "has never been sued by investors in the company". Such searches miss most state courts and private arbitration.

The Elliott case (C.D. Cal. No. 2:23-cv-06190) was dismissed without prejudice, meaning the claim could be filed again elsewhere; the court ruled only that it lacked power over the defendant. The Oxford case (C.D. Cal. No. 2:23-cv-10329) ended in a permanent injunction by stipulation: a court order, agreed by both sides, that bars the conduct for good.

Two days later, on August 28, 2024, an involuntary Chapter 7 petition was filed against Oxford (Bankr. C.D. Cal. No. 2:24-bk-16947-NB). Nothing in either docket links Noble's case to the bankruptcy. What happened to Oxford Gold Group customers is on its own page.

Regulator actions: none found for either company#

SafeOunce found no CFTC, SEC, FTC or state regulator action against Birch Gold Group or Noble Gold Investments in searches on September 29 and October 2, 2026. Every case we track is in our list of gold IRA enforcement actions. We searched CFTC press releases, SEC litigation releases, and state attorney general and securities regulator sites. The state sweep does not yet cover all 50 states.

A 1998 CFTC case against "Noble Wealth" concerns a different firm. For context, the most recent new CFTC complaint against a retail metals dealer we found, as of September 25, 2026, was against Regal Assets, filed September 27, 2023 (CFTC release 8791-23).

Website statements vs the IRA rules: RMD age 72 at Birch, home storage at Noble#

Both companies' websites contain statements that conflict with IRA tax rules, and the most costly one is Noble's gold IRA page offering home storage for IRA gold. An RMD (required minimum distribution) is the yearly withdrawal the law requires from a traditional IRA. A trustee is the custodian that must hold IRA metal. The table lists eight statements, what the rule says and the citation.

Statement Page and date What the rule says Citation
Birch: RMDs apply to "account holders aged 72 and older" ("aged 72 or older" on the platinum page) Birch gold IRA page, updated 2026-10-01; platinum IRA page, 2026-05-06 73 if born 1951 to 1958; 75 if born 1960 or later; Birch's own Roth page says 73 26 U.S.C. 401(a)(9)(C)(v)
Birch: "IRS-approved depositories like Delaware Depository and Brink's" ... "fully insured" Birch homepage, 2026-09-29 The IRS approves no vault; the trustee must hold the metal. Vault cover pays metal value and excludes war and confiscation 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B); Delaware Depository FAQ
Birch: early withdrawals bring "capital gains taxes on profits" Birch blog, 2026-09-29 IRA withdrawals are ordinary income, plus 10% before age 59½ 26 U.S.C. 408(d)(1); 26 U.S.C. 72(t)
Noble: "You have the option to either store your gold at home or at a secure depository in Texas." Noble gold IRA page, re-read 2026-11-06; silver IRA page, 2026-10-02 Home storage is a taxable distribution McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (2021-11-18)
Noble: "Morgan Silver Dollars (NGC MS68)" and an "1854 Kellogg $20 Coin" under "Ira-Approved" Noble IRA pages, 2026-10-02 Rare coins are collectibles; an IRA that buys one is treated as taking a distribution 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(1) to (3)
Noble: "Noble Gold only sells IRS-approved metals" Noble gold IRA page, re-read 2026-11-06 The IRS keeps no list of coins; eligibility comes from the statute 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3); IRS nonbank trustee list covers trustees only
Noble: "11 IRS-approved depositories", a list that includes First State Depository Noble depository guide (2025-03-12), read 2026-09-29 First State Depository was hit by a CFTC restraining order (2022-09-29), and its owner was sentenced to 65 years (2025-06-17) CFTC release 8606-22
Noble: "Noble Gold is the only custodian offering a flat-fee structure" Noble gold IRA page, 2026-09-29 Noble is a dealer; Equity Trust is the custodian Noble's own support page

Table T9: Website statements checked against the tax code, September 29 to November 6, 2026.

Noble's own homepage gets the storage rule right: IRA metal "must be stored in an IRS-approved depository (not at home)". Only the "IRS-approved" wording is off, since the IRS approves no vault. Why a home storage gold IRA fails the trustee test is explained with the McNulty ruling.

Birch gets two things right that Noble's IRA pages do not. Its home storage page advises against home storage and cites McNulty, and its gold IRA page (updated October 1, 2026) mostly says "IRA-eligible". Yet Birch's how-to-purchase page (SafeOunce earns nothing from this link.) (updated September 22, 2026) says IRA options are "Limited to IRS-approved precious metals", the same error flagged at Noble (read October 2, 2026).

Birch's "72" is out of date: no one born in 1951 or later starts RMDs at 72. The current ages are on gold IRA required minimum distributions.

Noble's rare-coin listings raise a second rule. The IRS collectibles rule explains why most rare coins fail.

Birch Gold or Noble Gold: Which Company Fits Your Situation?#

Neither company is better for everyone: the right one depends on how much you are moving, the storage you want and what you can get in writing. The ten situations below each point to one deciding fact.

Your situation What the records point to Deciding fact
1. Under $5,000 Neither; a gold ETF in an IRA you already have Birch $5,000 and Noble $20,000 minimums; GLDM 0.10% a year
2. $5,000 to $19,999 Only Birch accepts you Fees take about 1.2% to 4.7% a year; ask whether bullion-only makes sense
3. $20,000 to $50,000 Both accept you Birch's shared storage is $40 to $50 a year cheaper; Noble offers only segregated
4. More than $50,000 Birch pays year one Worth $315 to $365, less than one point of spread; compare the percent over spot first
5. You want your own coins kept apart About the same on paper $285 a year on Equity Trust's schedule for Birch (if it applies) vs $275 or $285 on Noble's two pages
6. You want the fewest BBB complaints Noble 1.2 vs 3.9 per 100 reviews, before adjusting for sales volume
7. You want a contract you can read first Neither publishes one Birch's website terms already reach "any transaction" and require confidential arbitration in Des Moines
8. You want a US vault in writing Birch names five US vaults Noble's IDS includes a Canadian site, so ask for Dallas or Delaware
9. You want a written buyback price Neither publishes one Ask both for the bid method
10. You have both written quotes The lower percent over spot On $100,000, 1 point over spot is about $1,000, more than the 10-year fee gap (at most $785)

Table T10: Verdict by reader situation, from the dated facts above. Not personal advice.

SafeOunce's results for both are provisional: Birch Gold earned 35 of the 47 points checked so far and Noble Gold 37 of the 53 points checked (October 2, 2026). A provisional result is not a score out of 100 and has no band. Neither company has had our written quote test, which covers 19 points. The scoring rules are in how SafeOunce rates gold IRA companies.

The two companies differ on two items: published account fees, where Noble's pages conflict, and the catalog mix (Table T4b). Because the checked items differ, the two provisional results are not a ranking, and we name no overall winner.

What Should You Ask Birch Gold or Noble Gold Before You Sign?#

Ask both companies the same six questions in writing, on the same day, before you move any retirement money. The six questions are listed below.

  1. Ask for the price of each coin and its percent over spot.
  2. Ask what the company would pay you for the same coins tomorrow, and how many days a sale takes.
  3. Ask for the purchase agreement by email before you pay.
  4. Ask which fee schedule applies, with its revision date: at Noble, $275 or $285; at Birch, which custodian and whether storage is shared.
  5. Ask how many days you have to cancel, and from when.
  6. Ask for the vault and city in writing, and confirm the metal will never be stored at home.

All 12 questions from the longer checklist are in how to choose a gold IRA company.

Put both written quotes side by side in our gold IRA company comparison tool.

Federal law backs the first question. The Telemarketing Sales Rule, 16 CFR 310.3(a)(1)(i), requires a telemarketer to disclose the total cost before you pay. Under 310.6(b)(5), precious metals investment offers stay under the rule even when you made the first call.

How are review sites paid to recommend Birch Gold or Noble Gold?#

Both companies run affiliate programs that pay websites for customers, and neither publishes how much it pays. An affiliate is a website paid for sending customers. Birch's affiliate page says: "We pay for every qualified lead and offer commissions on every sale throughout the customer's lifetime." Noble's sign-up page promises "huge payouts" without amounts.

Three of the top five Google results for "birch gold vs noble gold" on November 6, 2026 came from one affiliate network, and every readable result says it can be paid by companies it lists. We explain the whole system in are gold IRA reviews paid.

Who endorses Birch Gold and Noble Gold?#

Birch Gold's homepage lists Ron Paul, Dan Bongino, Stephen K. Bannon, Megyn Kelly, Chad Prather and Lance Wallnau, and Noble Gold's features Kevin Sorbo, Dave Rubin and Seth Holehouse (September 29, 2026).

The CFTC warns in general (release 8881-24) that fraudulent dealers "target their ads to political or religious programming just to gain your trust". This is not an allegation against either company. Who is paid by whom is listed under celebrity gold IRA endorsements.

How do Birch Gold and Noble Gold compare with other gold IRA companies?#

Each company has its own head-to-head pages against the other large gold IRA sellers. The ten pages are listed below.

Every pair and every gold IRA alternative is listed under gold IRA comparisons.

Is Birch Gold a legitimate company?#

Yes: Birch Gold Group, LP is a Des Moines, Iowa dealer with a BBB A+ grade and 9 complaints in three years (October 2, 2026), and no regulator action was found (September 29, 2026). Legitimate is not the same as cheap: Birch publishes no coin prices and refunds only counterfeits. Everything else is in our Birch Gold review 2026.

Is Noble Gold legitimate?#

Yes: Noble Gold Investments, legally Golden Bull, LLC of Encino, California, has a BBB A+ grade, 3 complaints in three years and no regulator action found (Oct. 2, 2026). Its two fee pages disagree, though, and its gold IRA page offers home storage that the tax code does not allow. The full answer is on Is Noble Gold Investments legit.

Does Birch Gold sell physical gold outside an IRA?#

Yes: Birch Gold sells coins and bars for home delivery, and its prices page says home delivery has no custodian or storage fees (September 29, 2026). Noble also sells for home delivery from $10,000, and its Royal Survival Packs start at $5,000 (September 29, 2026). Those are cash purchases and never go into an IRA.

Can you keep Birch Gold or Noble Gold IRA metal at home?#

No: IRA bullion must be in the physical possession of a trustee. The Tax Court treated coins kept at home as a taxable distribution in McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (2021). Noble's gold IRA page says otherwise, while its homepage agrees with the law. The ruling is explained under gold IRA home storage.

Can you move from one company to the other later?#

Yes: metals can move between IRA custodians in kind through a trustee-to-trustee transfer, but the old custodian charges exit fees and Noble's $20,000 minimum still applies. An in-kind transfer moves the coins themselves, not cash. A transfer is not a rollover: it has no 60-day clock and no once-per-year limit (IRS Publication 590-A).

Equity Trust lists $125 per in-kind transfer out and a $250 termination fee, but does not say whether both apply on one full exit. Noble's gold IRA page lists $75 and $250, and GoldStar $75 and $150, with the same open question. Steps and costs are in switching gold IRA custodians or companies.
