Is Goldco Legit? Complaints, Lawsuits and BBB Record (2026)

Goldco checked Nov. 2026: all 62 published BBB complaints sorted by problem, 4 federal court cases with dockets, no regulator action found, and how to complain.

Key takeaways

  • Goldco is a legitimate, operating company: the BBB grades it A+, federal courts know it as Goldco Direct LLC, and SafeOunce found no regulator action as of November 6, 2026.
  • Goldco holds a BBB A+ grade, has been accredited since December 9, 2011, and has 72 BBB complaints in three years, 34 in the last 12 months (November 6, 2026).
  • Of the 62 Goldco complaints the BBB publishes, 39 say the customer paid far more than the metal was worth, and 15 describe waiting weeks to sell or withdraw.
  • On Trustpilot, Goldco scores 4.4 from 1,796 reviews, with 89% five-star and 3% one-star, and Trustpilot notes it has not recently asked customers for reviews (November 6, 2026).
  • Four federal cases name Goldco Direct LLC: two class actions over marketing calls or texts that Goldco settled, one individual case resolved in 2024, and one case Goldco itself brought against a competitor.

Yes. Goldco is a real, operating gold IRA seller, legally Goldco Direct LLC of Calabasas, California. It has a BBB A+ grade, 72 BBB complaints in three years and no regulator action found (November 6, 2026). Four federal cases name it: two class actions over marketing calls or texts, one individual case resolved in 2024, and one case Goldco brought against a competitor. Legit is not the same as low-cost, so what do the Goldco complaints actually say?

A gold IRA is an IRA that holds physical gold through a custodian, a trust company that keeps the account. The BBB (Better Business Bureau) is a private nonprofit that grades how firms handle complaints. SafeOunce read all 62 complaint texts the BBB publishes for Goldco, counted them by problem and set Goldco's replies beside them. We also opened the four federal court files, checked the regulators and matched each complaint to Goldco's own pages. Fees, the $25,000 minimum (goldco.com FAQ, September 29, 2026) and what $100,000 really costs are in our Goldco review; this page covers the complaint, court and BBB record as of November 6, 2026.

The facts below come from the BBB, Trustpilot, four federal court dockets and Goldco's own website, each dated.

Is Goldco Legit? The Short Answer#

Goldco is a legitimate, operating company: the BBB grades it A+, federal courts know it as Goldco Direct LLC, and SafeOunce found no regulator action as of November 6, 2026. A regulator is a government agency that can fine or sue a company, such as the CFTC or a state securities office. So if you ask "is Goldco legit", the record says yes. SafeOunce found no court finding of fraud against Goldco in federal dockets (November 6, 2026).

Legit means the company is real and has no record of fraud findings. It does not mean its prices are low. Of the 62 published BBB complaints, 39 say customers paid far more than metal value, and 15 describe waiting weeks to sell in early 2026. Goldco publishes no coin prices, no spread and no customer agreement. And gold pays no interest while you wait for it to cover that markup.

Several ranking pages say things the records do not support. One says Goldco complaints are "never about ... miss-selling". Another says "most complaints get resolved", yet the BBB marks 13 of 72 as resolved. One offers "Self Storage Gold IRAs", but IRA metal kept at home is a taxable distribution (McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10, 2021). Four call coins, custodians or vaults "IRS-approved". The IRS approves no coin or bar (26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)), and its only approval list, for nonbank trustees (Treas. Reg. 1.408-2(e)), includes no major metals custodian. Which company name do the records use?

Goldco Direct LLC, not "Gold Co" of Portland, Maine: the names on the record#

Goldco's legal name is Goldco Direct LLC, the name on every federal docket and on its BBB profile; its website disclaimer calls it Goldco Precious Metals. An LLC is a limited liability company. The BBB lists "Type of Entity: Limited Liability Company (LLC)" and "Business Incorporated: 10/26/2011". Goldco and many review sites say it was founded in 2006, and SafeOunce has found no record that settles the difference.

A similar name causes a bigger mix-up. In Google's results for "goldco complaints" on September 29, 2026, the top result was the BBB page of Gold Co, an investment adviser at 145 Newbury St in Portland, Maine. When read on November 6, 2026, that page showed no complaints and two reviews.

Both reviews describe Goldco. One, dated February 22, 2024, says "GoldCo took $72,000 for coins" and got an offer of "$50,000" less than a year later, about 31% less. The other, dated November 12, 2024, describes a $52,000 rollover in 2023 and a $4,000 loss. Complaints filed under the wrong name never reach Goldco's own BBB count. Searches such as "is gold a legit site" or "is gold.com legit" are about other businesses, not Goldco.

The step-by-step way to check a gold IRA company by its legal name is on our verification guide.

Goldco BBB Rating and Complaint Record#

Goldco holds a BBB A+ grade, has been accredited since December 9, 2011, and has 72 BBB complaints in three years, 34 in the last 12 months (November 6, 2026). The Goldco BBB profile also lists 1,717 customer reviews. A BBB rating and a complaint record measure different things, so the table shows both.

The table lists Goldco's BBB record as shown on November 6, 2026.

72 BBB complaints in three years, 34 in the last 12 months, and what an A+ grade means#

Nearly half of Goldco's 72 BBB complaints, 34, arrived in the last 12 months, and only 13 of the 72 are marked resolved (November 6, 2026). The BBB uses two words that sound alike. "Resolved" means "the complainant verified the issue was resolved to their satisfaction". "Answered" means the business replied, but the customer "did not accept the response" or did not tell the BBB.

Goldco has answered every complaint, so none is "unanswered", and that is most of what an A+ measures. In the BBB's rating method, 90 of the 100 positive points relate to complaints, and customer reviews are not used. BBB accreditation is a paid membership, not a license. The BBB also warns that "the complaint text that is displayed might not represent all complaints filed with BBB."

Whether BBB ratings are reliable for gold IRA companies is covered on our rating signals page.

Complaint density: Goldco against ten other gold IRA sellers#

Goldco has 4.2 BBB complaints per 100 BBB reviews, the fifth-highest rate among eleven gold IRA sellers SafeOunce tracks, but the second-largest number of complaints after American Hartford Gold. Complaint density is complaints divided by reviews, so large and small sellers can be compared.

The table ranks eleven gold IRA sellers by BBB complaints per 100 BBB reviews, with the date each row was read.

Counts grow with sales volume, and disputes settled privately or in arbitration never reach the BBB. A middle rate is neither a clean bill nor a warning, for Goldco or for other gold IRA companies.

Every seller's record is on our page of gold IRA companies rated and ranked.

How Goldco answers BBB complaints#

Goldco answered all 62 published complaints, usually within 10 days, and it uses three standard replies. The longest wait for a first reply was 25 days, and 45 of 62 got one within two weeks (SafeOunce count, November 6, 2026). The three standard replies are listed below.

  • The statement reply (more than a dozen replies): what the custodian statement shows "is just the spot price of the precious metals, not the value of the precious metals in the account".
  • The call-volume reply (more than a dozen replies): "Interest in precious metals has risen to levels not seen in decades, which has resulted in unusually high call volumes and longer response times".
  • The reviews reply: "As you can see from the 1000s of 5-Star reviews we have, this isn't how we handle our customers."

In 12 complaints, the customer formally rejected Goldco's reply on the BBB page. Other replies record that a manager called the customer and made an offer. One resolved case shows the other side: a customer who bought $55,000 of metal in 2022 later wrote that the resolution "is satisfactory to me" (May 14, 2026).

What 62 Goldco BBB Complaints Say: 6 Problems, Counted#

Of the 62 Goldco complaints the BBB publishes, 39 say the customer paid far more than the metal was worth, and 15 describe waiting weeks to sell or withdraw. The other 8 are about sales calls, buyback shipments, an inherited account and one claim of missing metal.

SafeOunce read every published complaint text from November 22, 2023 to August 25, 2026 and gave each one a single main problem. The counts are SafeOunce's; the claims are the customers', and none has been verified. Goldco BBB complaints are also getting more frequent. Of the 62, 28 are dated 2026, and 16 of those came in January and February.

The table counts the 62 published Goldco BBB complaints by main problem (read November 6, 2026).

Problem Complaints Share Years filed Marked resolved
Paid far more than metal value (premium coins, statement drop) 39 63% 2023: 1; 2024: 13; 2025: 15; 2026: 10 9
Waited weeks to sell or withdraw 15 24% 2024: 1; 2026: 14 3

Total 62 100% 2023 to 2026 12

Customer statements, unverified. One customer filed the same text twice (December 8, 2025 and February 6, 2026). The BBB marks 13 of all 72 complaints resolved; 12 of them are among the published texts.

What does "paid far more than metal value" look like in dollars?

The largest group, 39 of 62, says Goldco sold coins at two to three times the metal's market price, usually "premium", "specialty" or "limited mintage" coins, not plain bullion. The spot price is today's market price for one ounce of raw metal. A premium coin is sold well above its metal value, often from a limited run. Bullion means plain coins and bars priced close to metal value.

The table shows five complaints that give both the price paid per ounce and the spot price on the purchase date, with SafeOunce's arithmetic.

Complaint date Purchase Price paid per ounce Spot price stated Over spot (computed) Share of price that is not metal (computed)
Aug. 21, 2026 Dec. 2023, "specialty coins" $59.47 about $24.00 148% 60%
Feb. 17, 2026 Sept. 2023, 2 oz silver pieces $65.12 about $22.00 196% 66%
Feb. 6, 2026 Apr. 26, 2023, "Premium Silver", 1,668 oz $69.55 $22.77 205% 67%
Jan. 2, 2024 Apr. 10, 2023, 1 oz silver coins $71.20 about $25 185% 65%
Apr. 11, 2025 Oct. 2021, 700 coins $64.55 $21 to $22 about 193% to 207% about 66%

Customer-stated figures, unverified; computations by SafeOunce. Over spot = price ÷ spot − 1; share not metal = 1 − spot ÷ price.

On the April 2023 purchase, 1,668 ounces at $69.55 cost $116,009. The same silver at $22.77 was worth $37,980, a gap of $78,029 (customer-stated prices, SafeOunce computation). The customer describes it as an immediate loss of about $74,000. Goldco replied that it had tried to reach the customer and that it looks "forward to discussing your questions" (December 23, 2025 and February 9, 2026).

The sales path shows up in the texts too (SafeOunce count). Across all 62 complaints, six mention free silver or a bonus, and at least four say ads, radio or a trusted media figure brought them in. Thirteen mention their age, retirement or veteran status, and 17 describe a 401(k) or IRA rollover. Others say the salesperson steered them from bullion to "numismatic" or "limited mint" coins.

Free silver rarely covers that kind of markup. In a SafeOunce example with assumed numbers, a 10% bonus on $100,000 of premium coins at a 30% spread leaves about $74,344 of sale value. Plain bullion at a 5% spread leaves about $90,547, so the bonus buyer is $16,203 behind. The bonus breaks even only if the premium coin spread is 13% or less.

One customer says a rep told him numismatic coins "were a better performer" than bullion (February 10, 2026). Goldco replied that his buyback offer "would nearly double your initial purchase amount" (June 1, 2026). The customer calls that same offer a "loss ... of over 42%" against what the metal itself gained. How numismatic coin upsells work, and why the CFTC calls "semi-numismatic" a made-up term, is on our upsell guide.

For an IRA, ask for 1-ounce bullion coins or bars. Get the percent over spot for each item in writing before you sign.

Gold IRA markups and spreads are the largest cost these complaints describe. Published spread ranges from the sellers that print them are on gold IRA markups and spreads.

Why the first statement shows less: spot price vs what you paid#

Ten complaints give both what the customer paid and what the custodian statement later showed: from 38% to 66% less, about 50% at the middle. A custodian is the trust company that holds the IRA and sends statements. The table lists the ten complaints with both figures (customer-stated; SafeOunce computation).

Paid When Statement value When Below paid
$23,056.60 Nov. 3, 2025 $13,745.67 Dec. 31, 2025 40%
$122,726.00 Mar. 22, 2022 $75,599.48 June 2024 38%
$37,968.27 Feb. 18, 2022 about $13,000 Oct. 2022 about 66%
$34,693 June 5, 2023 $12,066.36 Oct. 2023 65%
$100,000 Oct. 2022 $52,000 by Mar. 2025 48%
$100,000 2024 about $50,000 June 2025 about 50%
$90,000 not stated about $50,000 Mar. 2025 about 44%
$60,000 not stated $30,000 Oct. 2025 50%
$118,000 June 2022 about $60,000 May 2024 about 49%
$55,000 Sept. 2022 about $21,000 metal value Apr. 2026 about 62%

Customer-stated figures, unverified. Metal prices moved between the dates; the gap is the markup plus any price change.

Goldco's standard reply explains the gap: the statement shows "just the spot price ... not the value". One reply adds that "the custodian does not display premium value on their statements". Equity Trust, the custodian Goldco names for one customer in a March 12, 2026 BBB reply, says the same in its disclosure. Its statement values "do not include any markups, commissions or premiums from the precious metals dealer". Why every buyer pays more than the spot price of gold is explained on our spot price guide.

What can you actually sell for? One complainant says a Goldco rep gave him a "retail price", a "bid (buy back) price" and a "3 year bid (buy back) price". He writes that retail and bid were "about 47% different" (customer statement, February 10, 2026). A bid is what a dealer pays you to buy your metal back.

What each line on a gold IRA statement means is on our statement guide.

What a 200% markup means: the break-even math#

At the 67% spread in the April 2023 complaint, the metal must roughly triple, a rise of about 205%, before those coins are worth what was paid. A spread is the share of your price that is not metal. A typical buyback bid sits a little below dealer cost, which pushes the rise needed to break even to about 220%.

The table shows the rise in the metal price needed to break even at five spreads.

Spread Rise to reach the price paid at metal value Rise needed at a typical buyback bid
5% 5.3% 10.4%
20% 25.0% 31.1%
40% 66.7% 74.9%
60% 150% 162%
67.3% (April 2023 complaint) about 205% about 220%

Spread = share of the price that is not metal. Bid 4.69% below dealer cost, the industry template in Lear Capital's terms (December 2025) and Preserve Gold's agreement (June 2025). Goldco publishes no spread or bid. SafeOunce computation.

Test your own spread in the gold IRA break-even calculator.

Metal prices did rise sharply. Goldco's own BBB reply put spot silver at $86.01 on January 12, 2026, about 3.8 times the $22.77 one customer cites for April 2023. At that price, an ounce bought at $69.55 was worth about 24% more than it cost, even at metal value (SafeOunce computation).

Goldco's replies tell 2026 complainants that buyback offers would be "almost twice" or "nearly double" what they paid. One complainant's own figures show a buyback quote of $177.21 an ounce on January 26, 2026, against a purchase price of $59.47. The markup did not disappear, though. Bullion bought at a 5% spread would have gained far more over the same rise.

Waiting weeks to sell or withdraw in early 2026 (15 of 62)#

Fifteen complaints describe waiting weeks for Goldco to call back, quote a buyback price or process a sale; 14 were filed from January 8 to May 29, 2026. Liquidation means selling the metal in your IRA for cash. A wire is a bank transfer.

Four customers say Goldco told them it would not process liquidation requests until January 16, 2026. Others describe a 3-week wait for a promised 5-day callback, about 16 messages over 16 days, and a sale started January 16 that was still unpaid in early March. One customer writes that the phone lines were answered by an automated system until about February 26, 2026. These are customer statements, and SafeOunce has not verified them. One ranking review says withdrawals "can take 7 to 10 days"; these complaints describe weeks.

Goldco's replies cite "unusually high call volumes and longer response times". They add that these were "felt across the industry, including at custodians and depositories". In one reply, Goldco gives its own timeline of a customer's calls and writes that the customer "chose to wait, and the market subsequently moved" (March 12, 2026). Three of these 15 are marked resolved, and in most of the others Goldco says it later reached the customer.

Ask Goldco in writing how many business days a sale takes, from the request to the wire, and how the price is set on the day. The steps and costs of how to sell gold in your IRA, including custodian fees and taxes, are on our selling guide.

Calls and emails after asking for a free kit (4 of 62)#

Four complaints are about sales calls and emails that did not stop. One person asked only for a brochure, then got calls "even late at night after 830pm" from many different numbers. Goldco replied that it had "taken the necessary steps to ensure your number is removed from our call list" (June 24, 2026). Another customer said the unsubscribe button did not work. Goldco replied on March 2, 2026 that it had removed the email address and phone number.

A third customer says that asking for educational material led to repeated calls after declining to give investment details. These complaints echo the two federal class actions over Goldco's marketing calls or texts, covered below. How to stop gold IRA cold calls and texts under the Do-Not-Call rules is on our calls guide.

Buyback shipping, delivery and an inherited account (4 of 62)#

Four complaints cover rarer problems: two buyback shipping disputes, one family locked out of an inherited account, and one customer who says the metal never appeared. A depository is the vault that stores IRA metal.

On February 11, 2026, a customer wrote that one of five boxes sent for a buyback was "refused by the Delaware Precious Metals Repository due to damage". The box was shipped back. Goldco replied that it had tried to send a new shipping label. On April 11, 2025, another customer said Goldco voided a $48,000 cash buyback by claiming the depository had rejected a damaged package, which the customer disputes. Goldco replied that "your package was rejected by the depository and not by Goldco", and that it offered to pay for reshipping and honor the agreed amount.

On October 18, 2024, a customer wrote that money was "charged but no gold/silver in my account" at the custodian. Goldco replied on November 8, 2024 that it had tried to reach the customer. This is the only missing-metal complaint among the 62. SafeOunce's method puts a company on watch only after 3 such complaints, filed with the BBB or a regulator, within 90 days. The steps to check delivery of IRA metal on your custodian statement are on our delivery checklist.

The custodian statement is also where heirs find an inherited gold IRA. On August 25, 2026, heirs wrote that they could not get into their late father's account after years of calls. Goldco replied that the writer was not "an authorized party" and asked the authorized party on the account to contact Goldco.

When a parent dies, the beneficiary named on the account must contact the custodian, not just the dealer. What heirs must do with an inherited gold IRA is on our heirs guide.

What Goldco Customers Say on Trustpilot and Other Review Sites#

On Trustpilot, Goldco scores 4.4 from 1,796 reviews, with 89% five-star and 3% one-star, and Trustpilot notes it has not recently asked customers for reviews (November 6, 2026). So most Goldco reviews there were written unprompted. When SafeOunce sorted the one-star reviews on September 29, 2026, they repeated the four themes listed below.

  • Coin steering: reviewers say staff pushed "exclusive" limited-mintage coins, meaning small runs sold at higher prices.
  • Statement shock: one reviewer reports losing about $38,000 on a $123,000 rollover, or 30.9% (reviewer statement, unverified).
  • Slow callbacks: reviewers describe waiting about two weeks for a call back.
  • Unmet promises: reviewers say buyback or bonus promises were not kept.

These are the same four problems the BBB texts show, from a different set of customers. The star score has its own limit. Trustpilot adds seven 3.5-star reviews to every company's score, and the ten gold IRA sellers SafeOunce compares all show 89% to 99% five-star reviews (September 29, 2026), so the stars separate them poorly. On the positive side, many Goldco reviews praise named staff.

Other badges need the same care. Goldco's homepage says it is "Rated Triple A by Business Consumer Alliance" (November 6, 2026). The BCA is a private nonprofit funded mainly by member dues, and it does not publish its formula. TrustLink shows Goldco at 4.8 from 254 reviews (September 29, 2026); the BBB founded TrustLink in 2008 and spun it out in 2012.

Forbes Advisor ranks Goldco 10th of 10 on transparency and trust, a score built from online comments. It also reports that 91% of comments on Goldco's pricing and fees are negative (list captured August 17, 2026). RetirementLiving's user reviews are positive in the pages read, though two items mention a three-year holding condition for the buyback, covered below.

Goldco Lawsuits: 4 Federal Cases Found#

Four federal cases name Goldco Direct LLC: two class actions over marketing calls or texts that Goldco settled, one individual case resolved in 2024, and one case Goldco itself brought against a competitor. No court has ruled on Goldco's prices, and SafeOunce found no fraud judgment for a customer. A class action is one lawsuit filed for a whole group of people. The TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) is the federal law that limits sales calls and texts.

The table lists the four cases with their court, number, dates and outcome.

Summerton v. Goldco Direct LLC (2023-2026): texts after "stop" and a $2,000,000 settlement#

Summerton v. Goldco Direct LLC is a class action over marketing texts, settled for a $2,000,000 fund and given final approval on March 26, 2026. The case is in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, No. 3:23-cv-00238. Final approval is the judge's last sign-off on a settlement (final approval order).

The class is people on the National Do-Not-Call Registry who replied "stop" or "unsubscribe" and still got more than one text in 12 months. It covers the four years before the case was filed on April 18, 2023. The court put the group at "approximately 19,280 persons" (preliminary approval order, Dkt 60). The settlement FAQ says Goldco "denies each and every allegation of wrongdoing, liability, and damages", and "The Court has not decided who is right."

The fund pays the lawyers first, plus the costs of notice and administration and a service award, a payment to the woman who brought the case. Class counsel asked for up to 33.3% plus expenses, and up to $7,500 for her. What is left is split among people who filed a valid claim, each getting their "pro rata share". If the court granted the full request, at most about $1,326,500 was left before administration costs. That is about $69 per class member if all 19,280 had claimed (SafeOunce computation). Some summaries give $103.73 per member. That divides the whole $2,000,000 by 19,280 and ignores the lawyers' share, costs and the service award. The actual payment per person depends on how many claimed, which is not public.

Some pages say unclaimed money goes back to Goldco. The "returned to Defendant" line in Dkt 60 sits under "Effect of Failure to Approve Settlement". It applied only if the court had refused approval, and the court approved.

The deadline to opt out or object was February 25, 2026. To opt out means to leave the class and keep your own right to sue. The deadline to file a claim was April 10, 2026. Class members who did not opt out gave up the right to sue Goldco separately over these texts. Checks go out within 60 days after the settlement's Effective Date; questions go to the settlement administrator at (833) 647-8970. A payment from the "Goldco Direct LLC TCPA Settlement" comes from this fund through the administrator.

How to stop gold IRA sales calls and texts, and what the Do-Not-Call rules allow, is on our calls guide.

Judson v. Goldco Direct, LLC (2019-2021): an earlier telemarketing (TCPA) class action#

Judson v. Goldco Direct, LLC was an earlier class action under the TCPA, settled in 2020 and given final approval by the federal court in Los Angeles in June 2021. The case number is C.D. California No. 2:19-cv-06798. It alleged marketing calls or texts that broke the TCPA.

The docket gives the dates. The complaint was entered on August 6, 2019, and Goldco filed a notice of settlement on October 16, 2020. Preliminary approval was entered on December 30, 2020. After a final approval hearing on June 11, 2021, the minute order entered June 14, 2021 awarded class counsel "$500,000 in attorneys' fees and $28,068.89 in costs". It also awarded a "$5,000 incentive award" and "$55,000" for settlement administration, $588,068.89 together (SafeOunce computation). The total fund is not shown on the public docket.

Ashworth v. Goldco Direct LLC (2024): an individual case resolved in 2 months#

Ashworth v. Goldco Direct LLC is an individual lawsuit filed in federal court in Los Angeles on July 22, 2024 and closed on September 19, 2024 after the plaintiff reported it resolved. The case number is C.D. California No. 2:24-cv-06144. Goldco's time to answer was extended twice by agreement. On September 16, 2024, the plaintiff filed a "Notice of Resolution". Three days later, the court stayed the case pending final settlement and dismissal and removed it from its active cases.

The complaint is not on the free docket, so what was alleged is not known, and the settlement terms are not public.

Goldco Direct v. Wilson (2018-2019): the case Goldco brought over a fake customer website#

Goldco Direct, LLC v. Wilson is the case Goldco brought: it alleged a competitor posed as a customer's relative and ran a "goldcosucks" website. The court granted Goldco a preliminary and then a permanent injunction, an order telling the other side to stop (N.D. Alabama, No. 4:18-cv-850).

The facts come from the court's opinion of March 27, 2019, as recited by the court. The customer bought more than $400,000 of metal in three orders from October 2016 to March 2018. Goldco refunded the last order, $159,901.72, when she asked to cancel within 24 hours. It "did not agree to cancel or repurchase" the first two, more than $240,000 together (SafeOunce computation). A related 2018 subpoena dispute ran in the federal court in Sacramento (E.D. Cal. docket).

Customer fraud judgments and arbitration awards: none found#

SafeOunce found no court judgment or arbitration award against Goldco for fraud or mispricing in the searches listed below (November 6, 2026). Arbitration is a private judge instead of a court, usually with no appeal. The table lists each search, where it was run, when, and what it found.

Regulator Actions Against Goldco: None Found#

SafeOunce found no action against Goldco Direct LLC by the CFTC, the SEC, the FTC or any state regulator in searches on November 6, 2026. The CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) is the federal agency that polices fraud in physical metals sales, and state securities offices act too. Other sellers do appear in precious metals IRA enforcement actions. Every case SafeOunce tracks is in our list of precious metals IRA enforcement actions.

Regulator actions can take years to become public, so check again before you buy. "None found" covers these searches on this date. It is not a promise that no agency has ever looked at Goldco.

No single agency licenses gold IRA sellers; the CFTC, the SEC, the FTC and the states each cover part of the field. Why no single agency covers them is explained on who regulates gold IRA companies.

What Goldco's Documents Say About Each Complaint#

Goldco's public pages answer few of the complaints above: they publish account fees and shipping times, but no coin prices, no spread limit, no buyback terms and no customer agreement. Three rivals publish full contracts, so the gaps are easy to see side by side.

The table matches each complaint type to what Goldco's public pages say and to what three rivals' published contracts say (pages read November 6 and September 29, 2026).

Complaint type What Goldco's public pages say What is not public American Hartford Gold, Lear Capital, Preserve Gold contracts

Sources: goldco.com pages (homepage, terms, cost page updated February 2025, gold IRA page, promotion terms); AHG agreement (September 2026); Lear terms (December 2025); Preserve agreement (June 2025).

Gold IRA company contracts differ most on spread caps, cancellation and claim deadlines. All ten sellers are compared on gold IRA company contracts.

Markups: no price list, no spread cap and no public customer agreement#

Goldco publishes no coin prices and no spread limit, and its customer agreement, where any limit would be, is not on goldco.com (November 6, 2026). Goldco quotes prices by phone. Its promotion footnote ends: "For additional details, please see your customer agreement." Goldco is not alone here. Of 15 operating sellers SafeOunce checked on October 2, 2026, 4 publish a spread range and 4 publish live prices.

Federal rules still protect you on the call. The FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule requires sellers to tell you the total cost and quantity before you pay (16 CFR 310.3(a)(1)(i)). It covers precious metals sales even when you made the first call (16 CFR 310.6(b)(5)).

Buyback: "guaranteed at the highest price", and the three-year condition reviewers describe#

Goldco's homepage says it "offers a Buy Back program guaranteed at the highest price", but no Goldco page SafeOunce found publishes the buyback terms, formula or holding period (November 6, 2026).

Others describe a time condition. RetirementLiving's Goldco FAQ, read November 6, 2026, says the highest-price buyback is for customers who "liquidate their accounts three years after the initial purchase date". ConsumerAffairs reports the same. Two BBB complaints allege extra deductions for selling sooner: "an additional 13%" before three years (February 10, 2026), and 25% with money to stay "3-5 years" (March 18, 2024). A third alleges "20% (as a penalty)" on any withdrawn silver or gold (April 30, 2025). Goldco's replies to these complaints do not mention such a deduction. To the 2026 customer it wrote that "the buyback offer you received would nearly double your initial purchase amount".

Ranking pages promise a "zero liquidation fee" and "no liquidation fees", but no Goldco page says so. Contracts from other sellers take the opposite line on guarantees. The agreements of American Hartford Gold, Lear Capital, Preserve Gold, Goldline and American Bullion say the law prohibits guaranteeing repurchase. Forbes Advisor labelled Goldco "Best for Buyback Guarantees" (list captured August 17, 2026).

Gold IRA buyback programs differ in formula, timing and fees. What each contract says is on gold IRA buyback programs compared.

Can you cancel a Goldco order or sue Goldco? Cancellation, arbitration and claim deadlines#

Goldco publishes no cancellation window, and the one court record shows it refunded an order cancelled within 24 hours but not two earlier orders. Its website terms contain no arbitration clause. Whether the customer agreement has one, or a deadline to bring a claim, is not public. Ask Goldco the three questions below before you sign.

  1. Ask how many days you have to cancel, and from when.
  2. Ask whether disputes go to arbitration, where, and who pays.
  3. Ask whether a one-year claim deadline applies.

A new IRA comes with a right to revoke it for at least 7 days (Treas. Reg. 1.408-6), but that right runs against the custodian and covers the account, not the dealer's order. The 7-day revocation right and how to cancel a gold IRA are on our cancellation guide.

How to Complain About or Report Goldco, and Try to Get Money Back#

Write to Goldco first at the contact it gives the BBB (support@goldco.com or 855-472-8494), then to your custodian, then to the BBB and a regulator. Go to the BBB and a regulator if Goldco does not fix the problem. Review sites print other Goldco phone numbers, so use the contact on Goldco's BBB profile or goldco.com. Follow the five steps below in order, and keep copies of everything.

  1. Write down your dates, amounts and the names on your paperwork (Goldco Direct LLC).
  2. Email Goldco with what you want (a price breakdown, a refund, a sale date) and a deadline.
  3. Send a copy to your custodian in writing; Goldco names Equity Trust as the custodian in its own BBB reply for one customer.
  4. File on Goldco's own BBB profile in Calabasas, not the Portland, Maine "Gold Co" page.
  5. Report to the agency in the table below that matches your problem.

The SEC warns that "self-directed IRA custodians generally do not evaluate the quality or legitimacy of any investment" (SEC investor alert). So the custodian keeps records, but it does not judge the price you paid. Which agency handles each problem is explained on how to report a gold IRA company.

The table matches each kind of problem to the place that can act on it.

A complaint can bring an answer, but money back usually comes through cancellation, arbitration or restitution. Restitution is money a court or regulator orders a seller to repay. What cancellation, arbitration and restitution can do is explained on how to get your money back from a gold IRA company.

The deadlines that decide your options#

Act fast, because the deadlines that protect you run in hours, weeks and years, and a complaint to the BBB or a regulator does not stop any of them. The four deadlines that matter for a Goldco order are listed below.

  • Cancellation: not published by Goldco; the one court record shows a refund only for an order cancelled within 24 hours (as recited March 27, 2019).
  • Delivery: regulators treat about 28 days from payment as the line for "actual delivery" (CFTC release 8215-20, August 4, 2020). This is a benchmark for IRA cash purchases, not a legal deadline for you.
  • Contract claim deadline: not public for Goldco; it is 1 year, or 1 year and 1 day, in three rivals' agreements (September 2026).
  • CFTC reparations: 2 years, and only against firms registered with the CFTC, so it rarely applies to metals dealers (7 U.S.C. 18(a)(1)).

Should Goldco's Record Stop You? A Verdict by Situation#

Goldco's record does not show fraud, but it does show that many customers paid far more than metal value and did not understand that until their first statement. Whether that matters depends on what you buy and what you get in writing. The 39 price complaints are about premium coins, not plain bullion.

Goldco's SafeOunce result is provisional: it earned 26 of the 42 points checked so far (October 2, 2026), and the score and band appear once all 100 points are checked. Both class actions are about telemarketing calls or texts, not prices. So they do not trigger the method's rule that keeps companies with a settled pricing or disclosure case off best-of lists. Goldco is also not on watch (1 missing-metal complaint, against a threshold of 3 in 90 days). Weights, gates and evidence rules are on how SafeOunce rates gold IRA companies.

The table gives a verdict for six reader situations, as of November 6, 2026.

Your situation Verdict Why
You want plain bullion and can get prices in writing Workable The complaints are mostly about premium coins; ask for the percent over spot per item
You are offered premium, limited or "specialty" coins, or free silver Walk away unless the per-coin price is in writing 39 of 62 complaints; at a 67% spread, metal must roughly triple
You may need to sell within 3 years Ask about the buyback holding period first Two complaints and two review sites describe a 3-year condition; a third complaint alleges a 20% withdrawal penalty
You may need cash quickly Ask the sale time in writing 15 complaints describe weeks of waiting in early 2026
You want a written contract before calling Ask for the customer agreement by email Not public on goldco.com
You are helping an older parent Be on the call and ask for everything in writing 13 complaints mention age, retirement or veteran status

Four events would change this verdict.

  • A regulator action against Goldco Direct LLC by the CFTC, the SEC, the FTC or a state.
  • A settled pricing or disclosure case, which would keep Goldco off best-of lists.
  • Three or more non-delivery complaints with the BBB or a regulator within 90 days, which would put Goldco on watch.
  • The customer agreement not being sent when a buyer asks for it.

How Does Goldco's Record Compare With Other Gold IRA Companies?#

Goldco sits in the middle on BBB complaints per review and publishes its account fees but no spread limit. It is the only seller in the table below with two settled TCPA class actions. The table compares five gold IRA sellers on their complaint, contract and court records (dates in each cell).

Company BBB complaints per 100 reviews Spread range published Federal cases against the company found Regulator action found
Goldco 4.2 (Nov. 6, 2026) No 3 (2 TCPA class actions, 1 individual; plus 1 brought by Goldco), Nov. 6, 2026 None (Nov. 6, 2026)
American Hartford Gold 13.8 (Oct. 2, 2026) Yes, up to 19.99% on bullion (contract dated Sept. 2026) 2 (Mathys, sent to arbitration; McDougall, dismissed 2024), Sept. 29, 2026 None (Sept. 29, 2026)

Noble Gold 1.2 (Oct. 2, 2026) No 0 (2 cases filed by Noble), Oct. 2, 2026 None (Oct. 2, 2026)

The best gold IRA companies are ranked on the same records, with the spread counted. Rankings by real cost and legal record are on best gold IRA companies.

Goldco vs American Hartford Gold, Priority Gold and Augusta on complaints#

American Hartford Gold has more BBB complaints than Goldco, 111 (October 2, 2026) against 72 (November 6, 2026), and a higher rate per review; Augusta and Noble Gold have far fewer. Each record is read the same way on the pages for American Hartford Gold complaints, Priority Gold complaints and Augusta Precious Metals complaints. Side by side: Augusta Precious Metals vs Goldco, Goldco vs American Hartford Gold, Goldco vs Priority Gold, Goldco vs Birch Gold, Goldco vs Lear Capital and Goldco vs Noble Gold.

Goldco "best" labels, celebrity endorsements and paid review pages#

Goldco's homepage shows a "Money.com 2026 Best Customer Service" award and features Sean Hannity, Donald Trump Jr., Lara Trump, Tom Selleck and Dennis Quaid, as of November 6, 2026. Money's editorial list dropped Goldco on May 29, 2026. On Money's September 25, 2026 page, Goldco appeared only in a paid partner box. At least four of the 62 complaints say ads, radio or a trusted media figure brought them to Goldco.

The CFTC warns in general that fraudulent dealers "target their ads to political or religious programming just to gain your trust" (CFTC release 8881-24). This is a general warning, not an allegation against Goldco. Who endorses which seller is tracked on celebrity gold IRA endorsements.

Goldco also pays websites that send it customers, through an affiliate program, so many review pages that rank it are paid when you call. How gold IRA review sites are paid is explained on our reviews guide.

SafeOunce takes no money from any company named on this page. To see the other side, read who pays SafeOunce.

Is Goldco a scam?#

No court or regulator has found Goldco ran a scam: SafeOunce's searches of federal dockets and regulator releases found no fraud judgment and no regulator action as of November 6, 2026. Customers who call it a scam in complaints mostly mean they paid far more than metal value, a cost Goldco does not publish. The warning signs of real gold IRA scams are on our scams guide.

Is Goldco BBB accredited?#

Yes: Goldco has been a BBB Accredited Business since December 9, 2011, with an A+ grade as of November 6, 2026. Accreditation is a paid membership, not a government license.

Where is Goldco located?#

Goldco is at 24025 Park Sorrento, Suite 210, Calabasas, California 91302, according to its BBB profile (November 6, 2026). Some release pages say Woodland Hills, and the "Gold Co" in Portland, Maine is a different company.

How much does Goldco charge?#

Goldco's cost page lists a $50 setup fee, $125 a year for administration and $100 or $150 a year for storage (February 2025), plus an unpublished coin markup. Those Goldco gold IRA fees cover the account only. The $25,000 minimum (goldco.com FAQ, September 29, 2026) and a $100,000 worked example are on our page about Goldco gold IRA fees and minimums.

Who owns Goldco?#

The BBB names Trevor Gerszt as Goldco's founder and CEO and JD Koehler as president; Goldco Direct LLC does not publish who owns it or in what shares. No public record SafeOunce found gives ownership shares.
