American Hartford Gold opens a gold IRA with $10,000 and Noble Gold Investments asks for $20,000, as of October 2026. The bigger difference is what each company puts in writing. Which one shows you the costs before you call?
American Hartford Gold publishes its contract, including the highest markup it may charge, but no account fees. Noble Gold publishes its account fees, on two pages that disagree, but no contract and no markup. The markup is the amount the company adds above the metal's value. Account fees are the yearly bills for the custodian and the vault, and the contract is the agreement you sign. This page belongs to our guide to gold IRA companies, and it is built from each company's own documents, BBB records and court files.
The page covers fees and the markup, the $10,000 and $20,000 minimums, buyback and cancellation wording, then complaints and lawsuits. It ends with a verdict by reader situation. We do not name an overall winner.
The five key numbers are listed below. BBB stands for Better Business Bureau.
- Minimum: $10,000 at American Hartford Gold vs $20,000 at Noble Gold (as of Oct. 2, 2026).
- Yearly account fees: not published at American Hartford Gold vs $275 or $285 at Noble Gold, on two pages (as of Oct. 2, 2026).
- Markup limit in writing: up to 19.99% on bullion and 59.99% on limited coins at American Hartford Gold vs not published at Noble Gold (as of Oct. 2, 2026).
- Cancellation: 7 days, non-bullion orders only, at American Hartford Gold vs not published at Noble Gold (as of Oct. 2, 2026).
- BBB complaints closed in three years: 111 for American Hartford Gold vs 3 for Noble Gold (as of Oct. 2, 2026).
American Hartford Gold vs Noble Gold at a Glance: 16 Facts Side by Side#
The table below compares the same 16 facts for American Hartford Gold and Noble Gold. Each fact comes from the company's own page or contract, a court record or the BBB, with the date we checked it.
Six terms in the table need a plain meaning. The custodian is the trust company that holds the IRA, and the depository is the vault. Segregated storage keeps your coins apart from other people's, and non-segregated (pooled) storage does not. The spread is the gap between what you pay and what the dealer's own cost is. BBB accreditation is a paid membership.

Table T1: American Hartford Gold vs Noble Gold Investments: 16 facts, checked October 2, 2026. The legal-name and business-start rows identify the companies and are not counted in the 16.
Where a cell says "not published", we looked on the company's website and found nothing. We add the figure when the company puts it in writing. Our American Hartford Gold review covers the company alone.
American Hartford Gold is not connected to The Hartford, the Connecticut insurer.
Three of the five pages Google ranks first for this comparison give Noble Gold's minimum as $5,000. Noble Gold's own gold IRA page says $20,000. Our Noble Gold Investments review covers Noble Gold alone.
How Do American Hartford Gold and Noble Gold Fees Compare?#
Noble Gold publishes its yearly account fees, $275 or $285 depending on which of its pages you read, and American Hartford Gold publishes none, as of October 2026. So which is cheaper? The account fees alone cannot tell you, because on a large order the bigger cost at both companies is the markup on the coins.
Account fees are flat yearly bills. The markup is a share of every dollar you spend on metal. One point of markup on a $100,000 order costs $1,000 on day one. That is more than three years of Noble Gold's listed fees. Our guide to gold IRA fees lists every cost layer, from setup to exit.
Account fees: Noble Gold publishes two prices, American Hartford Gold publishes none#
Noble Gold's support page lists an $80 setup fee and $275 a year, while its gold IRA page lists $50 and $285 a year. Both pages were live on October 2, 2026. The support page says: "There is a one-time $80 setup fee, followed by a flat annual rate of $275. This includes $125 for custodial services and $150 for secure, segregated storage." The fee table on the gold IRA page reads "Account Setup Fee $50", "Annual Account Maintenance $125" and "Annual Metals Storage $160".
One ranking page prints Noble Gold's "annual fee" as $80. On the support page, $80 is the one-time setup fee and the yearly charge is $275.
Three fee terms appear below. A flat fee is the same dollar amount at any account size. An in-kind distribution means taking the coins themselves instead of cash. A closure fee is charged when you end the account. The table below sets both Noble Gold pages beside Equity Trust's schedule and one press report.
| Fee line | Noble support page | Noble gold IRA page | Equity Trust metals-only schedule, segregated | Equity Trust metals-only schedule, pooled | AHG as reported by Money (not confirmed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | $80 | $50 | $50 | $50 | $50 |
| Yearly custodian fee | $125 | $125 | $125 | $125 | $75 up to $100,000; $125 above |
| Yearly storage | $150 | $160 | $160 | $110 | $100 |
| Year one | $355 | $335 | $335 | $285 | $225 |
| Each later year | $275 | $285 | $285 | $235 | $175 |
| 10 years | $2,830 | $2,900 | $2,900 | $2,400 | $1,800 |
| Closure fee | Not stated | $250 | $250 | $250 | Not stated |
Table T2: Noble: both pages read October 2, 2026. Equity Trust: schedule FS-0004-05, revision 081726. Money: list dated September 25, 2026. The Money column uses the $75 tier.
With the $250 closure fee, 10 years on Noble Gold's gold IRA page cost $3,150.
Noble Gold's gold IRA page matches Equity Trust's published precious-metals schedule on five of six lines. Those lines are setup, yearly fee, segregated storage, closure and wire. The in-kind fee differs: $75 on Noble Gold's page, $125 on Equity Trust's schedule. The support page's $80 and $150 match no Equity Trust schedule we read. The full Equity Trust precious metals IRA fees include exit charges.
American Hartford Gold's FAQ, read October 2, 2026, gives no dollar figure. It says: "Fees vary based on your account's size and the metal holdings in your depository. Depending on your situation, the storage might be free."
American Hartford Gold's IRA page names Equity Trust Company as custodian. Year one costs $285 pooled or $335 segregated if Equity Trust's published precious-metals schedule applies to your account. Money.com's September 2026 list reports $75 a year up to $100,000 and $125 above, plus $100 for storage. We could not confirm these in American Hartford Gold's documents.
Review sites say American Hartford Gold waives first-year fees above $50,000 and three years of fees above $100,000. American Hartford Gold's own pages do not say this.
The largest 10-year gap between any two columns is $1,100 ($2,900 less $1,800). On a $100,000 order, that equals 1.1 points of markup. So at $100,000 the markup decides the cost, not the fee sheet.
A $20,000 account is different. One point of markup there is $200, and Noble Gold's $285 a year equals 1.4 points every year. Ten years of those fees ($2,900) equal 14.5% of a $20,000 account.
The markup: American Hartford Gold prints its limits, Noble Gold prints nothing#
American Hartford Gold's contract allows a markup of up to 19.99% on bullion and up to 59.99% on limited numismatic coins, and Noble Gold publishes no markup at all. The contract is the Shipping and Transaction Agreement (SafeOunce earns nothing from this link.) uploaded in September 2026. Paragraph 4B lists three ranges for "AHG's Spread, for cash and IRA transactions":
- Bullion: "one percent (1.00%) up to nineteen-point ninety-nine percent (19.99%)".
- "AHG exclusive coins as well as semi-numismatic coins": "up to thirty-nine-point ninety-nine percent (39.99%)".
- "Certain numismatic coins of which the supply is particularly limited": "up to fifty-nine-point ninety-nine percent (59.99%)".
Paragraph 4A adds: "The Spread may be negotiable".
The contract's spread is a share of the price you pay. Measured over the dealer's cost, the limits are larger: a 19.99% spread is a 25.0% markup, 39.99% is 66.6% and 59.99% is 149.9%.
Four words explain the ranges. Bullion means plain coins and bars priced close to the metal. Semi-numismatic and numismatic coins are collector-style coins sold far above the metal's value. The spot price is the market price of raw metal, and the bid is the price a dealer pays you. The table below shows what $100,000 of metal sells for the same day at each limit.
| Spread | What it is | Same-day sale value of $100,000 | Rise needed to get your money back |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | Retail bullion benchmark, not an AHG figure | $90,547 | 10.4% |
| 19.99% | AHG bullion limit | $76,260 | 31.1% |
| 39.99% | AHG exclusive and semi-numismatic limit | $57,197 | 74.8% |
| 59.99% | AHG limited numismatic limit | $38,135 | 162.2% |
Table T3: Illustration. Spread = the share of your price above the dealer's cost. Sale value uses the industry buyback template, where the dealer's bid is about 4.7% below its cost. Not a quote from either company.
Our explainer on gold IRA markups and spreads shows how to get the number in writing.
The limits have moved. The 2023 version of the same contract (V323) put the top limit at 34.99%. The 2026 version puts it at 59.99%. The 2023 text also said IRA transactions "cost more to process".
The federal commodities regulator, the CFTC, gives two yardsticks. Its release 8215-20 of August 4, 2020 says bullion typically sells 5% to 10% over spot and numismatic coins 40% to 200% over spot. Its 2024 advisory "Precious Metals: 10 Things" calls semi-numismatic "a made-up industry term that really has no special meaning".
Noble Gold's support page answers the price question without a percentage: "We offer a flat fee structure when you acquire the metals from us". One Trustpilot reviewer reports markups of "10%" on gold and "16%+" on silver, in a review of October 30, 2023. We could not verify those figures. Neither is a Noble Gold price list, so ask for the spread in writing.
Publishing a high limit is not the same as charging it. American Hartford Gold is one of 4 sellers out of 15 we checked that publish any spread range, as of September 29, 2026.
How much must gold rise to cover the markup?#
At a 19.99% markup, gold must rise about 31% before a same-day sale gets your money back; at 39.99%, about 75%. The formula in words: divide 1 by (1 minus the markup) times 0.953, then subtract 1. At 5% the answer is about 10%. Nobody can tell you when, or whether, gold rises that much.
What is American Hartford Gold's free silver worth?#
American Hartford Gold's free silver pays off on a $100,000 order only if the coins you must buy carry a markup of 17% or less. The homepage, read October 2, 2026, says: "Learn How You Can Receive Up To $15,000 in FREE Silver On Qualifying Purchases". A qualifying purchase is an order that meets the offer's conditions.
Break-even is the point where the bonus exactly covers the extra markup. The table below tests five cases with the contract limits from the section above.
| Scenario on a $100,000 order | Same-day sale value |
|---|---|
| Plain bullion bought elsewhere at a 5% spread, no bonus | $90,547 |
| AHG bullion at its 19.99% limit, no bonus | $76,260 |
| Coins at a 17% spread + $15,000 bonus silver (break-even) | $90,547 |
| Coins at the 39.99% limit + $15,000 bonus silver | $68,635 |
| Coins at the 59.99% limit + $15,000 bonus silver | $49,572 |
Table T4: Hypothetical, not a quote from American Hartford Gold. Assumptions: the full $15,000 bonus on a $100,000 order (the tiers are not published); bonus silver carries a 20% spread; sale at the industry template bid (95.3125% of dealer cost).
At the 39.99% limit, the order plus bonus sells for $68,635. That is $21,912 less than plain bullion at a 5% spread. It is also $7,625 less than American Hartford Gold bullion at its own 19.99% limit.
The bonus is smaller on a larger order. The same $15,000 on $250,000 breaks even at a 9.8% spread. Ask which coins qualify and what their spread is before you count the silver as a gain.
A federal guide covers the word "free". Under 16 CFR 251.1, a "free" item must not be paid for through a higher price on the item you buy. We state the rule only and allege nothing about this offer.
Noble Gold's gold IRA and support pages advertise no free silver. One Noble Gold blog page, read September 29, 2026, carries the banner "Get A Free Gold Coin When You Open A Gold IRA Account" without terms. How free silver gold IRA promotions are paid for is explained step by step.
Minimum Investment: $10,000 at American Hartford Gold vs $20,000 at Noble Gold#
American Hartford Gold's minimum order for a gold IRA is $10,000 and Noble Gold's minimum IRA investment is $20,000, as of October 2026. American Hartford Gold's FAQ says: "The minimum order size for our self-directed Gold IRA is $10,000." Noble Gold's gold IRA page lists a "One Time Minimum Investment $20,000" for the Gold and Silver IRA. It lists "$10,000" for "Cash Purchase & Home Delivery".
The IRS sets no minimum; these are company rules. The most a person aged 50 or older can contribute in 2026 is $8,600 ($7,500 plus $1,100, IRS Notice 2025-67). So both minimums assume a rollover or transfer, which means moving retirement money you already have.
The $5,000 figure that other pages print for Noble Gold is the entry price of its Royal Survival Packs. Noble Gold's support page prices them "From $5,000 to $500,000", and they are not an IRA product. Review sites also report a $5,000 cash minimum at American Hartford Gold, which its own pages do not state. We list the gold IRA minimum investment for every company we track.
What the minimum means for fee drag#
At its $20,000 minimum, Noble Gold's yearly fees take 1.375% to 1.425% of the account. A $10,000 account on American Hartford Gold's custodian schedule would lose 2.35% to 2.85% a year. Fee drag is the share of your account the yearly fees take. The table below shows fee drag at three account sizes.
| Account size and company | Yearly fee | Percent of the account a year |
|---|---|---|
| $10,000 at AHG, Equity Trust schedule | $235 pooled; $285 segregated | 2.35%; 2.85% |
| $20,000 at AHG, Equity Trust schedule | $235 pooled; $285 segregated | 1.175%; 1.425% |
| $20,000 at Noble Gold | $275 (support page); $285 (gold IRA page) | 1.375%; 1.425% |
| $100,000 at either | $235 to $285 | 0.235% to 0.285% |
Table T5: AHG rows assume Equity Trust's published schedule (FS-0004-05, revision 081726) applies; AHG publishes no fees. Noble pages read October 2, 2026.
Flat fees weigh most on small accounts. The lower minimum is not the lower cost. Firms that take smaller accounts are compared in best gold IRA companies for small investors.
Less than $10,000? A gold ETF may cost less#
With less than $10,000, neither company will open a gold IRA for you, and a gold ETF in an IRA you already have usually costs less per year. A gold ETF is a fund that holds gold and trades like a stock. Three large ones charge 0.10% (GLDM), 0.25% (IAU) and 0.40% (GLD) a year, per their 2025 and 2026 annual reports. On $10,000 that is $10 to $40 a year. The costs are set out in gold IRA vs gold ETF.
An ETF is a claim on gold, not coins in a vault under your name. Whether the account suits you at all is the subject of is a gold IRA a good investment.
Buyback and Cancellation: What Each Company Puts in Writing#
American Hartford Gold publishes the contract you sign, which gives a 7-day cancellation right on some orders and no buyback guarantee, while Noble Gold publishes no sales contract. Why does the written wording matter more than the sales call? Disputes are decided on the signed documents. A federal court has already enforced the arbitration clause in American Hartford Gold's agreement, in Mathys v. The Hartford Gold Group, LLC (N.D. Ill. No. 1:20-cv-03927). It sent the case to arbitration in 2020, and the result is not public.
Buyback wording: "makes no such guarantee" vs "guaranteed buyback program"#
American Hartford Gold's contract says the law stops it from guaranteeing a buyback, while Noble Gold's who-we-are page advertises a "guaranteed buyback program" and publishes no terms. A buyback is the company buying your coins back when you want cash. Liquidation means selling the metal for cash. The table below quotes each company.
| Company | Exact wording | Where | Date read | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AHG | "Because applicable laws currently prohibit AHG from guaranteeing to repurchase precious metals it sells, AHG makes no such guarantee, either as to actual repurchase or as to repurchase at a particular price." | Contract, para 6 | 2026-09-29 | No promise to buy and no promise of a price |
| AHG | "While we cannot legally guarantee that we will repurchase metals, we never charge any additional liquidation fees and provide a quick and simple 3-step liquidation process." | About page (company statement) | 2026-09-29 | No separate fee to sell, by its own statement; the price is still open |
| Noble | "Our guaranteed buyback program removes uncertainty - if you purchased from us, we'll buy it back. No questions, no hassle." | Who-we-are page | 2026-10-02 | A promise to buy; no price, no timing, no terms published |
| Noble | "top-rated buyback program"; "We offer a Buyback program to ensure that you are not left with finding a buyer"; "we'll buy back your coins at a fair price" | Homepage and gold IRA page; support page; rare-coins page | 2026-09-29 | Three more wordings; none states a price |
Table T6: Buyback wording in each company's own words.
Our guide to buyback prices and custodian fees when you sell explains the bid.
American Hartford Gold's sentence is common. The contracts of Lear Capital, Preserve Gold, Goldline and American Bullion carry the same "law prohibits" wording, as of September 29, 2026. Paragraph 7 of American Hartford Gold's contract adds a holding period: "Customer should be prepared to hold purchased precious metals for a minimum of five years or more."
One Trustpilot reviewer reports waiting four weeks without a response to a sale request to Noble Gold, in a review of February 20, 2026. Noble Gold's public reply says sale requests are handled "in queue order" and priced at live spot "at confirmation". Other firms' wording is in gold IRA buyback programs compared.
Cancellation: 7 days for non-bullion orders vs not published#
American Hartford Gold's contract lets you cancel non-bullion orders within 7 days of signing, and Noble Gold publishes no cancellation window. Paragraph 3 of the September 2026 contract gives a refund "if within seven (7) days after you execute this Agreement you notify us by phone and email". The notice must say "that you wish to cancel the non-bullion transactions". To execute means to sign. You must also "return the merchandise ... within three (3) days after its delivery to you". The refund then comes "within thirty (30) days". The paragraph adds that the period "shall begin from the execution date of this Agreement regardless of whether the account is fully funded for IRA transactions."
The clause has four limits.
- The return: the metal must go back within 3 days after its delivery to you. The refund depends on both steps, the notice and the return.
- Bullion orders: outside the guarantee. The clause covers "non-bullion transactions" only.
- The definition: the clause describes non-bullion by pointing to the bullion spread range (up to 19.99%). The text alone does not tell you which products qualify, so ask in writing.
- The 2023 version: it covered "the transaction" without the non-bullion limit.
American Hartford Gold's FAQ says a transfer "usually averages one-five business days". The contract allows delivery "within four to eight weeks" after the custodian's funds arrive. So the 7 days can end before the metal reaches the vault. For comparison, the CFTC's "actual delivery" test for financed metal purchases is 28 days (release 8215-20, 2020).
A second clause, price protection in paragraph 5, is also narrow. It applies only to semi-numismatic, exclusive or numismatic coins, for 7 calendar days. It pays the difference in more coins of the same type, not in cash.
Noble Gold's website terms contain no cancellation window, and its purchase agreement is not public. Its pages also differ on rollover timing, as read October 2, 2026. The support page says "between 3-7 days". The gold IRA page says "Most rollovers complete within 5-10 business days". Ask Noble Gold for its window in writing before you fund.
A separate federal rule gives you a right to revoke, which means to undo, a new IRA. Treasury Regulation 1.408-6 gives at least 7 days. That right runs against the custodian, not the dealer, and it does not undo a metal purchase. Our page on how to cancel a gold IRA separates the IRS right from the dealer's terms.
Contracts, custodians and depositories#
American Hartford Gold links its Shipping and Transaction Agreement from its homepage, and Noble Gold's purchase agreement is not public. So only one of the two contracts can be read before you call. The table below lists seven clauses from American Hartford Gold's contract, uploaded in September 2026.
| Clause | What the contract says | In plain English |
|---|---|---|
| Disputes (para 14) | JAMS arbitration at the office nearest you, before one retired judge, with no joinder | A private hearing instead of court; you cannot join your claim with other customers' claims |
| Deadline (para 14) | "ANY CLAIM OR LEGAL PROCEEDING HEREUNDER SHALL BE FILED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF ITS ACCRUAL" | You have one year from when the problem arises (its accrual) |
| Liability (para 12) | "LIMITED SOLELY TO THE AMOUNT CUSTOMER ACTUALLY PAID" | The most you can recover is what you paid |
| Calls (para 1) | Consent to calls "regardless of whether those numbers are listed on any state or federal 'Do Not Call' registry" | Signing lets the company call you even if you are on the Do Not Call list |
| Sales staff (para 4D) | Paid "on commission based at least partially on the volume and profit margin"; "not licensed" | The person on the phone earns more when the markup is higher |
| Advice (para 7) | "no fiduciary relationship exists" | Nobody at the company is legally bound to act in your interest |
| Changes (para 16) | "AHG may amend this agreement at any time solely by written notice" | The terms can change with a letter |
Table T7: Seven clauses of American Hartford Gold's Shipping and Transaction Agreement, September 2026 version.
Our table of gold IRA company contracts compared shows the same clauses at other firms.
Two smaller clauses also cost money. Paragraph 2B adds "a three percent (3%) merchant processing fee" on credit card payments. Under paragraph 2C, a buyer who defaults loses any resale gain: "AHG shall be entitled to keep the excess amount as liquidated damages".
Noble Gold's website terms have no arbitration clause and no claim deadline. Those may sit in the purchase agreement, which we have not seen. On September 29, 2026, the terms page named another company in two places. One line read "Goldco shall make reasonable efforts ship metals within five to fourteen (5-14) business days after receipt of good funds". Another referred to "testimonials presented on goldco.com".
American Hartford Gold names Equity Trust Company as custodian. Its FAQ says "we like Brinks Global Services and Delaware Depository", and its IRA page also lists International Depository Services. Delaware Depository offers segregated or non-segregated storage. Delaware Depository publishes its insurance terms: $1 billion of all-risk cover plus $100 million of contingent cover, as of September 29, 2026. All-risk means broad cover with listed exclusions. It pays metal value, not the premium you paid. It excludes war, terrorism, cyber events, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons, and confiscation.
FDIC and SIPC never cover IRA metal. That holds at every custodian and every vault.
Noble Gold's support page names "Equity Institutional" as custodian for gold and "New Direction IRA Services" for silver. It stores with IDS in Texas, Delaware and Mississauga, Ontario, and says: "We only offer segregated storage". IDS publishes no insurance limit. International Depository Services (IDS) has its own page.
Before choosing the Ontario vault, get the custodian's written confirmation that it accepts that vault for an IRA. Ask each company to email the agreement you would sign before you move any money.
Complaints, Lawsuits and Regulatory Records Compared#
American Hartford Gold has 111 BBB complaints closed in three years and Noble Gold has 3, and we found no regulator action against either, as of October 2, 2026. We found no customer lawsuit against Noble Gold.
The American Hartford Gold complaints, lawsuits and BBB record page reads the complaints one by one.
BBB and Trustpilot: 111 vs 3 complaints in three years#
American Hartford Gold's BBB profile shows 13.8 complaints per 100 reviews and Noble Gold's shows 1.2, as of October 2, 2026. That ratio is complaint density: complaints closed in three years per 100 BBB reviews. American Hartford Gold's rate is about 11 times Noble Gold's. The table below shows both records.
| Measure | American Hartford Gold | Noble Gold Investments |
|---|---|---|
| BBB grade | A+ | A+ |
| BBB accredited since | 2016-06-03 | 2017-01-23 |
| Complaints closed in 3 years | 111 | 3 |
| BBB reviews | 800 | 243 |
| Complaints per 100 reviews | 13.8 | 1.2 |
| Trustpilot score | 4.8 | 4.9 |
| Trustpilot reviews | 1,927 | 796 |
| Five-star / one-star share | 91% / 2% | 93% / 1% |
| Invites reviews | Not recently | Yes |
| Replies to negative reviews | 11% | 100% |
Table T8: BBB and Trustpilot profiles of both companies, read October 2, 2026.
Customers of both companies raise the same two issues: what the coins cost and how long things take. The difference is how often. American Hartford Gold closed 44 complaints in the 12 months to September 29, 2026, against 33.5 a year in the two years before. That is a rise of 31%.
We read American Hartford Gold's 20 most recent complaint texts on September 29, 2026. Of those, 14 concern markups or coin value and 5 concern delays. The BBB's own labels on that date were Product (37), Service or Repair (37), Sales and Advertising (22), Customer Service (6), Billing (5), Delivery (2) and Order (2). Noble Gold had 13 one- and two-star Trustpilot reviews visible on September 29, 2026: 4 about price or markup and 4 about delays or slow replies. These counts are SafeOunce's reading of customer statements, not findings.
Counts grow with sales volume. American Hartford Gold says it has served "2 million Americans" and delivered "$4 billion" in metals. Noble Gold says "Over 16,000 U.S. Investors" and "Over $2.5 Billion". These are company claims.
Both companies hold an A+ because the BBB grades complaint handling, not prices. By the BBB's own overview, 90 of 100 points relate to complaints, and reviews are not used. Why star ratings barely separate these firms is covered in BBB, BCA and Trustpilot ratings.
American Hartford Gold's arbitration clause also keeps serious disputes out of public view. Noble Gold's agreement is unseen, so we cannot say whether it does the same.
Lawsuits: the Mathys arbitration order and two other federal files#
In 2020 an 83-year-old customer alleged that American Hartford Gold sold him coins worth less than half the $604,331.83 he paid. The court sent the case to private arbitration without deciding it. Six court terms help here. An allegation is a claim nobody has proven. The plaintiff sues and the defendant is sued. A motion to compel arbitration asks the judge to send the dispute to a private hearing. A stipulation to dismiss means both sides agree to end the case. The TCPA is the federal robocall law, 47 U.S.C. 227. The table below lists four federal files.
| Case | Court and number | Filed / decided | What it was about | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mathys v. The Hartford Gold Group, LLC d/b/a American Hartford Gold Group | N.D. Ill. No. 1:20-cv-03927 (cited by the court as 20 C 3927) | Filed 2020; opinion 2020-12-07 (Dkt. 27, Judge Kocoras) | The customer alleged four purchases, $35,000 in December 2018 and $569,331.83 in October 2019, and that "the actual values of the coins were less than half" | Motion to compel arbitration granted; "Civil case terminated"; arbitration result not public |
| McDougall v. The Hartford Gold Group, LLC | C.D. Cal. No. 2:23-cv-03912 | Filed 2023-05-22 | Alleged violations of the robocall law (TCPA, 47 U.S.C. 227) | A joint stipulation to dismiss was filed 2024-05-28, according to docket listings (Justia, PacerMonitor); terms not public |
| Golden Bull, LLC v. Kirk M. Elliott et al. | C.D. Cal. No. 2:23-cv-06190-SB-MRW | Filed 2023; terminated 2023-09-05 | Noble Gold was the plaintiff; it alleged interference with an exclusive endorsement agreement and defamation | Golden Bull's claims dismissed, according to the court docket |
| Orion Precious Metals v. Money Group, LLC | C.D. Cal. No. 2:26-cv-07092 | Filed 2026-06-29 | Orion alleges Money was paid to rank companies and names American Hartford Gold among them; neither company is a defendant | Pending; no ruling known |
Table T9: Federal court files involving American Hartford Gold or Noble Gold, as of October 2, 2026.
That arbitration clause, with its one-year deadline, is still in the 2026 contract.
We found no lawsuit by a Noble Gold customer. A search of federal court opinions on govinfo.gov for "Golden Bull" returned none on September 29, 2026. That search covers published federal opinions only, not every state court.
Regulator actions: none found for either company#
We found no CFTC, SEC, FTC or state regulator action against American Hartford Gold or Noble Gold in searches on September 29 and October 2, 2026. We searched under all four names: American Hartford Gold, LLC; The Hartford Gold Group, LLC; Golden Bull, LLC; and Noble Gold Investments. The state sweep does not cover all 50 states. A 1998 CFTC case against "Noble Wealth" involves a different firm. Every case we track is in our list of gold IRA enforcement actions.
Website statements vs the rules: home storage, rare coins and old limits#
Both companies' websites carry statements that the tax code or their own other pages contradict. The table below lists six, with the page and the date we read it.
| Statement | Company and page | Date read | What the rule or record says |
|---|---|---|---|
| "You have the option to either store your gold at home or at a secure depository in Texas." | Noble, gold IRA page FAQ | 2026-10-02 (homepage read 2026-09-29) | 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3)(B): IRA bullion must be "in the physical possession of a trustee". Noble's own homepage says metals "must be stored in an IRS-approved depository (not at home)" |
| "Noble Gold is the only custodian offering a flat-fee structure" | Noble, gold IRA page | 2026-10-02 | Noble Gold is a dealer. Its named custodians are Equity Trust and "New Direction IRA Services" (now New Direction Trust Company) |
| "we can help you purchase coins to invest into your Gold or Silver IRA", next to Morgan and Peace silver dollars | Noble, rare-coins page | 2026-09-29 | 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(1): an IRA that buys a collectible coin is treated as paying out its cost. Morgan and Peace dollars are 90% silver, below the .999 needed |
| "There are currently 11 IRS-approved depositories", a list that includes First State Depository | Noble, depository guide dated 2025-03-12 | 2026-09-29 | The IRS approves no depository. First State failed: a restraining order was entered in a CFTC case on 2022-09-29 (release 8606-22), and its owner was sentenced to 65 years on 2025-06-17 |
| "The maximum annual contribution for 2025 is $7,000, or $8,000 if you are 50 or older"; RMDs "once you turn 72" | AHG, IRA page | 2026-10-02 | 2026 limit: $7,500 plus $1,100 at 50 or older (IRS Notice 2025-67). RMD age: 73 (born 1951 to 1958) or 75 (born 1960 or later) |
| "IRS-approved vaults" (AHG); "Noble Gold only sells IRS-approved metals" (Noble) | AHG IRA page; Noble site | 2026-10-02 | The IRS approves no coin, dealer or vault. Its only approved list is of nonbank trustees (73 entities as of 2026-04-01). Eligibility comes from 26 U.S.C. 408(m)(3) |
Table T10: Six website statements against the tax code and the record. RMD = required minimum distribution, the yearly withdrawal the law requires.
The first row matters most for your taxes. The page says home; the rule says trustee. The court ruling is explained under home storage gold IRA.
American Hartford Gold's FAQ gets this point right. It says "you must keep the gold and silver coins and bars in the vaults of an approved depository".
The rare-coins row turns on the collectibles rule. What counts as a collectible is set out in the IRS collectibles rule.
American Hartford Gold or Noble Gold: Which Company Fits Your Situation?#
Neither company is better for everyone: the choice depends on how much you are moving, what you want to read before you call and what each puts in writing. The table below gives the deciding fact for 10 situations, as of October 2, 2026.
| Your situation | What the records point to | Deciding fact |
|---|---|---|
| You have under $10,000 | Neither | Both minimums are higher; compare a gold ETF in an IRA you already have |
| You have $10,000 to $19,999 | American Hartford Gold is the only one of the two that takes it | Yearly fees weigh 2% or more at this size on the custodian's schedule; ask for the fee sheet first |
| You have $20,000 or more and want the yearly fees in writing before you call | Noble Gold | It publishes them; ask which of its two pages applies |
| You want to read the sales contract before you call | American Hartford Gold | Only it publishes the contract |
| You want a written limit on the markup | American Hartford Gold has one, and it is high | Up to 19.99% on bullion; Noble Gold publishes none; ask both for the spread on your exact order |
| You want the free silver | American Hartford Gold, with care | Worth it only if the qualifying coins' spread is about 17% or less on a $100,000 order; get the tiers and the spread in writing |
| You want a written right to cancel | American Hartford Gold, in part | 7 days from signing on non-bullion orders only; Noble Gold publishes none; ask both |
| You want the fewest complaints | Noble Gold | 3 vs 111 in three years; 1.2 vs 13.8 per 100 reviews; counts grow with sales volume |
| You want segregated storage in Texas | Either | Noble Gold offers IDS segregated only; American Hartford Gold also lists IDS; confirm the vault and the fee with the custodian |
| You want to keep the right to sue in court | Unclear for both | American Hartford Gold's contract requires arbitration and a court enforced it in 2020 (N.D. Ill. No. 1:20-cv-03927, arbitration result not public); Noble Gold's agreement is unseen; ask for it |
Table T11: American Hartford Gold or Noble Gold by reader situation. No overall winner.
American Hartford Gold shows you its contract and its markup limits. Noble Gold shows you its yearly fees. Neither shows you the price of a coin.
SafeOunce scores companies only on documents and written quotes. Neither company has a score yet. Each rating shows "Not rated: documents not received" until a written quote is on file and, for Noble Gold, its purchase agreement. The scoring rules are in how SafeOunce rates gold IRA companies.
Size changes the answer too. At $20,000, Noble Gold's $285 a year equals 1.4 points of markup every year. At $100,000, fees fall under 0.3% a year on Noble Gold's two published prices and on the Equity Trust schedule. At that size the spread on your order decides the cost.

What Should You Ask American Hartford Gold or Noble Gold Before You Sign?#
Ask both companies the same six questions in writing, on the same day, before you move any retirement money. The six questions are listed below.
- Ask for the price of each coin and its spread in percent.
- Ask what the company would pay you for the same coins today.
- Ask for every yearly and exit fee on one sheet. At Noble Gold, ask which of its two published fee sets applies.
- Ask for the cancellation window, when it starts and whether it covers bullion.
- Ask for the agreement you would sign, by email, before you pay.
- Ask which coins qualify for any free silver and what their spread is.
Exit fees are charges for leaving, such as Noble Gold's listed $250 closure fee. All 12 questions are in how to choose a gold IRA company.
Federal law backs the first question. The Telemarketing Sales Rule, 16 CFR 310.3(a)(1)(i), requires a telemarketer to disclose the total cost before you pay. Section 310.6(b)(5) keeps investment offers, such as precious metals, under the rule even when you called first.
SafeOunce takes no money from any company named on this page. No company can pay to change its rating or its place on SafeOunce.
Put both written quotes side by side in our gold IRA company comparison tool.
How are review sites paid to recommend American Hartford Gold or Noble Gold?#
Four of the five pages Google ranked first for "American Hartford Gold vs Noble Gold" on October 2, 2026 say they are paid by the companies they list. None of the five compares the two. One disclosure reads "We receive referral fees from listed companies". Another reads "Affiliate relationships may compensate us if you request a kit or open an account through our partner links".
The fifth page has no disclosure and names Regal Assets, a failed firm, among its top companies. The CFTC sued Regal Assets on September 27, 2023 (release 8791-23). A court entered default judgments of about $49.2 million on October 15, 2024. We explain the whole system in are gold IRA reviews paid.
Both companies run affiliate programs, and neither publishes what it pays. Money's list of September 25, 2026 ranks American Hartford Gold #4, with the label "Best for Low Fees", and Noble Gold #7. On September 29, 2026, American Hartford Gold also appeared in Money's paid partner block, and Noble Gold did not. In a pending suit, Orion Precious Metals alleges that Money was paid to rank companies (C.D. Cal. No. 2:26-cv-07092); the case is pending and no ruling is known.
Our own rules are on who pays SafeOunce.
Who endorses American Hartford Gold and Noble Gold?#
American Hartford Gold's homepage names Bill O'Reilly, Rick Harrison, Kim Iversen and Liz Wheeler, and Noble Gold's names Kevin Sorbo, Dave Rubin and Seth Holehouse. We read American Hartford Gold's homepage on October 2, 2026 and Noble Gold's on September 29, 2026. Endorsers with a business tie fall under 16 CFR Part 255. Noble Gold's own 2023 suit (C.D. Cal. No. 2:23-cv-06190-SB-MRW, dismissed September 5, 2023 per the docket) concerned an exclusive endorsement agreement. So these are contracts. Neither company publishes what it pays. Who is paid by whom is listed under celebrity gold IRA endorsements.

Is American Hartford Gold a good company to buy gold from?#
American Hartford Gold is an operating, BBB-accredited company that publishes its contract. That contract allows markups of up to 59.99%, and its BBB complaint count per review is the second highest among the ten sellers we track. The densities on September 29, 2026 were Lear 22.1, American Hartford Gold 13.9, Priority 5.9, Goldco 4.2, Birch 4.0, Preserve 1.6, Noble 1.2 and Augusta 0.7. Patriot Gold Group and Advantage Gold had none. Everything else is in our American Hartford Gold review 2026.
Is Noble Gold legitimate?#
Noble Gold is an operating, BBB-accredited company with 3 BBB complaints in three years and no regulator action found, as of October 2, 2026. Its own pages disagree on fees, though, and one says IRA gold can be stored at home. Its purchase agreement is also not public. The full record is on Noble Gold Investments complaints, lawsuits and BBB record.
Can you keep American Hartford Gold or Noble Gold IRA metals at home?#
No: metals in a gold IRA must stay with the trustee, and taking them home is a taxable distribution under McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (2021). The rule is the same at both companies. Noble Gold's "$10,000" cash purchase with home delivery is a non-IRA purchase. That is the only way to hold the coins at home.
Can you move from one company to the other later?#
Yes: IRA metals can move between custodians in kind through a trustee-to-trustee transfer, which sends the coins straight from one custodian to the next. Both companies name Equity Trust for gold, so the custodian may not even change. A transfer is not a rollover: it has no 60-day clock, no once-per-year limit and no withholding (IRS Publication 590-A).
Exit fees apply if the custodian does change. Equity Trust's schedule lists $125 per in-kind transfer out and $250 to close. Noble Gold's page lists $75 for an in-kind distribution and $250 to close. The new company's minimum still applies, and so does the spread if you sell and rebuy. Steps and costs are in switching gold IRA custodians or companies.
